this is a yootoob myth
gov surplus always brings a premium which is stupid because govt employees are hard on shit because not their money/bottomline. when heavy equipment goes cheap theres always something colossally wrong with it
t. buys shit from auctions all the time

Buy a decent unit at auction do your work and sell it in a few years. Don't buy rotted out bottom of the barrel but mid tier affordable name brand and sell it yourself.

guy on Youtube brought the biggest normal digger that weights 18 tons and requires Wide and Weight special permits just to move on the road, for $7500, and it all worked. 5 gal oil change. Says they are cheap because so hard to move and no one wants them, and big corp, big govt contracts, can't afford to take chance on downtime and bringing in another unit.

I bought an ultra-cheap one, 900kg single-stroke diesel, $5k last year. Over a year, in about 70 engine hours, it's paid for itself, since I ended up in a major renovation project, where I did a ton of trenching and also bought a cheap hydraulic hammer attachment and then did a ton of concrete wrecking.
I did a lot of small and some larger mods, notably this model had no thumb attachment point, so I welded one on and then attached a hydraulic thumb (fortunately it at least had the hose), had to also make a /diy/ pedal for it since you couldn't operate the hydraulic hammer otherwise (you need both your hands for guiding it).
Had repeated issues with slew ring bolts coming loose, upgrading to better /Belleville/ washers eventually seems to have resolved the issue. There are a ton of smaller problems on it, but nothing particularly noteworthy. It works really well for the money. If you can somehow get a name-brand one used for the same price, then maybe give it some consideration, but the cheapest name brands here started at twice the price.

Equipment auctions (Ritchie Bros etc.) always seem to have a whole horde of Chinese mini excavators going for pennies on the dollar, often brand new or nearly new. Might be worth looking at those if you want one, not only will it probably be cheaper but it also means they're already in the country and you don't have to deal with shipping, tariffs, etc.

I bought a 13 ton excavator a couple years back and took the smashed up cab off of it to do some extensive repairs and body work, and haven't had a chance to finish it yet... Fuck my life.

Did you get a good deal on it? 13 tons is probably easier to sell than an 18 ton. Is it even a oversized load?
Anonymous No.2949848 >>2949895

It's an absolute cherry unit other than the cab being smashed up some. 4000 hour Case cx130. Tight as can be. Was a Union Pacific machine with a rotating grapple on it that was removed before I bought it. Found UP service records and evidence of the rotating grapple documentation written in the cab. I actually think it might have set on a rail car loading and unloading railroad ties because the tracks and undercarriage are immaculate.

I gave 49k for it because it was so tight. Only other similar size ones for sale at the time were worn slop out with 14k hours for around 40k.

Yes 13 ton machines seem to demand a premium because they can easily be hauled without a bunch of b.s.

I have recently been eyeballing a somewhat local case 9030 (22 ton machine) with hydraulic grapple and 6000 hours, for 25k... Too many fucking projects and not enough motivation anymore. Getting old and burnt out sucks man.

Working on it man... like I said, just burnt out as fuck here lately. Always have 1000 daily obligations and no time to spend at the shop getting stuff done. I've completed a shit ton of "emergency" projects that pop up daily since pulling that cab, but haven't had the time to get back to working on it for some time. Removed all the inner skin panels, pounded out all the dents, got the door closing and latching pretty damn well. Just need to re-weld the inner skin panels, prime and paint, and then figure out how to make a frame/windshield out of lexan because the front windshield frame that lets it slide up and back was all missing. Shit costs an arm and a leg too to try and buy it from Case... A pull off cab from another machine was around 10k. Fuck it. I'll fix it myself. I want it air tight so I can freeze my balls off with the A/C on while ripping brush and trees out on the river bottom.

Thats a sweet machine, I would leave it open air and just put that fucker to work. I could keep that thing working for 9 months a year where I am with no glass

For me, it's to equip myself to do anything I could ever imagine having to do and set things up to be as easy to take care of as possible. Then I plan to pass it onto my kids so they are set up for life and libshits can seethe and cry about "generational wealth"

You know, planning ahead not only for my own wealth and well-being, but also that of my kids and my grandkids.

Get a 25cm bucket if you only have the 40cm one, and maybe a 80cm one for moving materials. 25cm trenches faster. 80cm helps you tip over and break your arm.

No speakers yet so I will probably have to sing "BING BONG CHINN CHINN DAOU"
I could get a decal for the side of my truck that says "City Earth Moving"
