I wanted to build something like a shelf, but the problem is that I live in a rented house and I'm not allowed to drill holes in the wall. So I was thinking maybe it's possible to use suction cups to hold the shelf in place.

The issue is, I'm not sure if that's even feasible or what kind of suction cups I should buy.

Let's say I want the shelf to support up to 10 kilograms of items. Would that be possible?

figure out the location of the corners and drill eyelets into the ceiling joists slightly inside each corner. duplicate on shelf. hang your shelf with wire or chain.

3M command strips are your best option. Use some to hold the shelf and others to hold hooks as far above the shelf as you can. The hooks will connect chains or sting that will hold most of the weight of the shelf. Pay attention to weight ratings and make sure that the weight is pulling down on them as close to vertical as you can get.

I realise you asked for a solution to get a simple shelf going, and you consider that to be your current and most pressing problem, but it is merely a surface symptom of a deeper rooted compromise in your life: Your position as a tenant in a country where that is not a viable way to exist and preserve your mental sanity in the long run.
I suggest you move to a country where the law protects tenants from absurd rental contracts. In some countries, drilling holes for mounting shelves is considered "contractual use of the rented property" and landlords cannot legally deny it at all.
Alternatively, if you really insist on living in your dystopian hellscape, I suggest you buy a property of your own.

Freestanding shelves can be much stronger and are more versatile. You might do a corner shelf if that suits your usable space.

Why not just build a dresser or cabinet or armoire or some other free standing structure with build in shelving?
