Been trolling marketplace for a nice workbench for a few weeks now and not finding shit, so I'm considering building my own.

Any reason I shouldn't just build the entire thing out of 4x4's like so?

I hate the ones with lengths of 2x4 making the top effectively 7" thick and full front crossmembers getting in the way of my knees. Basically I want one of those Husky/Kobalt butcher block ones but I don't want to spend $500.

Home Depot says this is ~$115 plus screws and maybe some nice casters.

I'd figure the surface wouldn't be good if you're gonna use it to work on heavy stuff. but that's because I'm a steel table junkie. I'd make it a bit wider
as long as you treat the wood with linen or some other oil, it should last a long while. and if you plan ahead you could add fittings for other tools like woodworking / metalworking vices

How do you build a workbench if you don't have a workbench to build one on first though? Thisnk this through young jedi.

Check Craigslist for coffee tables/dinner tables

I have tons of em in my shop that work great for medium duty workbenches

I would drill holes and run allthread through all the 4x4s and the legs on each end and 2 or 3 places I the center as well. The legs look like they should be pretty sturdy in the notched out area between 4x4s but you probably better do a brace front and rear on all the legs, not just the back. I'd suggest a half lap joint on the braces to the legs and top.

First, you glue laminate the top. You don’t want screws anywhere if that thing is going to see vibration because you’ll be replacing screws all the time.

Second, give it an apron (or two) if you don’t want cross members. For rigidity, and you can attach a bunch of shit to them for workholding the front/rear and mount a spindle vice. Leave some overhang on the top to clamp stuff to it of course. If you do cross members lock them in instead of screwing them on diagonally it’s going to be weak otherwise

If you make the legs out of laminated 2x4 with gaps instead of 4x4 you get strong joints on the short side without having to cut mortises or tenons into the short side crossmembers

It is a little bit easier to find pith-free 2x4s than 4x4s at home depot in my experience but ymmv

Leave overhang at the ends as well for clamping
