I got a Martin D-28 clone made by a luthier, and a nice hardcase for $300 because it had a star of David on it and nobody wanted it. How hard would it be to remove it and replace it with a larger inlay?

Super fucking easy. Oh, you mean well? And you didn't list what tools or skills you have? Oh, well then, impossible. Read the fucking sticky.

I have a Dremel I could probably rig up like a router. Exacto knives, some junk chistles I could probably grind down to be real narrow. I was more expecting an explanation of how it's generally done rather than how can I accomplish it with whatever shit I have laying around in my shed, though. Who doesn't like an excuse to buy more tools, anyway?

Never reading any sticky ever, sorry arts and crafts boy

Why is there what looks like a greek pi symbol in the middle of it?
Might be someone famous like Neil Diamond’s guitar.

Anyway, something like that is probably going to be done with chisels. You’d have to take off the pegs and hold it in a jig (which you construct to fit the neck) to use a router, and you have to chisel out the corners anyway. The router only does round corners.
The bottom doesn’t have to be totally flat, the inlay will be glued in slightly proud of the face, and then planed or sanded to height.

I have no idea, a letter from the Hebrew alphabet I suppose. No sprechen sie Deutsche. Luther's label reads it was made for a cantor of a synagogue.

I think I might just lay a veneer of some figured wood over the entire headstock and get some rattle can nitro.

a factory d-28 is like what.. $3k these days? I can only assume a custom luthier-built one would be considered even more valuable than a production guitar? Good deal.

Call an airstrike on it and build a new guitar that sounds like shit, then send a bill to the US government while calling everyone antisemitonic.
OR
Sell it as the instrument that Jeffrey Epstein used to hang himself.

Since you have to ask here I don’t think a luthier made guitar is the best thing to put your first custom made inlay in but there’s an easier way

First drill some tiny holes and cut around the edges gently until you can pry/pull it out.

Check approx diameter of the hole and find a round thing of an exact diameter like a coin or a medallion or whatever that’s a bit bigger and has a matching forstener drill size. For example Gold philharmoniker coins are 16mm exact, 1/4oz American eagle coins are very close to 22. Drill shallow precise hole and push the round thing in. Or get an exact diameter blank in any metal on eBay and have it engraved. For wood you can just drill with a good holesaw or plug drill or cut a piece of dowel if you want end grain

that's not a bad idea.

I might just leave it, and name it Miriam. It's kind of funny.

I'd not touch it at all but rather hide it. A sticker works. But is a bit ghetto.

You could go to a sign shop and get an engraved lamacoid made up and you can use some adhesive to adhere it over top of the star. I've seen some really cool metal ones. They can be painted too. But a nice badge shape with your name on it or some cool emblem would be nice too.

Or get one of these pick holders and adhere it over top of it. They already have adhesive on the back of them, just peel and stick. They're spring loaded and are actually really useful.

This way you can sell the guitar someday if you wanted to or if the price was right. I'm sure some Jewish person might be interested in that guitar.

Turn your $300 into $1000 if you're patient and if the guitar sounds good enough and it's a nice build. It can be done via Reverb.com

This is just a quick search on Aliexpress but it can be done if you have some time and patience to order from there. I like the photographic dogtag. I have no idea about custom shapes though...

Im a jew and have done some fretboard inlay projects before. Warning: it will probably look a little sloppy, but most diy inlay jobs do especially when its over a different pattern.

It can be a bit annoying to pry out existing inlay, so you could probably just dremel it out. If youre not too picky, you can buy precut abalone or pearl dots or stars and other basic patterns. Trace the piece on the headstock and rout out the outline, going a tad outside the line. Mix up a combination of glue and wood dust for whatever material youre inlaying into (looks like a lighter wood to me so find a matching dust). Put a bit of glue down for your inlay and line it up. Then fill the gaps with the wood glue goo. When its dry sand it flush and either try to match the guitars gloss finish, or get lazy and use nail polish on the bodged area.

If you have a custom design you want to do, take a piece of pearl or abalone, super glue a paper stencil to it, and use a vice and a jewelry saw to cut out a cross or swastika.

I only dabble a bit but this should work. This is a good book if youd like to learn more

You can also just get fake inlay stickers. They look good unless youre up pretty close
