The weather stripping on this window in my new house seems fucked
Requesting help:

I moved into a new house recently, and the window in my bedroom has this weather stripping randomly hanging off of it. It seems to have been glued in place and then duct taped in place, probably by the previous owner.

I have no idea who did it, why they did it, if I should just rip it off, or if I ought to replace it myself, but it seems like incompetent handywork which is present all over the house.

Any help will be strongly appreciated :)

Fig 2 the glue or whatever thick clear material holding the bottom of the weatherstripping in place (it was literally held in place with duct tape higher up the window before it gave out and started dangling)

Fig 3. - There appear to be some sort of clear tape or other kind of thin plastic stuck to the bottom of the window here. I have no idea why it looks like that or is only in that specific position instead of all around the window sash

Fig. 4 - Whoever did this obviously fucked something up, because both of the handles are broken in half on the inside

Fig. 5, the seal on the window when it is closed (after I ripped off the dangling weather stripping and glued bits)

All the other windows in the house seem to be sealed to about the same degree as this

Fig 7 another angle on a good window.

Note the lack of clear plastic tape on the sash, no additional weather stripping at all, nothing dangling, seal looks the same to my eyes, no apparent remnants of additional weather stripping having ever been there

I wonder if there was a slight draft in this window in the winter and he thought he could fix it by adding stripping or something??

It's really not clear what he might have been trying to "fix"

Any help pinning down an issue with this window that might have led him to try this would be much appreciated!

thanks

The white thing is not weather stripping, that's the black rubber outlining the window frame. The clear tape is interfering with the seal on the bottom.

Ohh that makes sense!

By the clear tape, do you mean red circle, yellow circle, or both here?

Thanks for your help

Previous owner must have thought the window was leaky and needed additional weatherstripping to make a good seal. Looks like they went about it in a very sloppy and retarded way. Sad. Many such cases.

You should leave it. You'll make it worse.

This
Just pull all the shit off and see if it's drafty, then if it is do it again, but not retarded. That stick on weather stripping is cheap at the hardware store

No they won't

Which should be adjusting the window, not glueing stuff on it. See if you can find some name etched into the metal parts inside the window, with that you should be able to find a manual or some YouTube vids on how to do it. If you know how, window adjustment isn’t too hard, but (to me) it’s very inobvious how to do it. Hence

been there, done that, in my previous flat since the landlord couldn’t be bothered.
Now, that I got my own place, I wanted to to it properly, so instead of an hour and about 10€ for those strips, I’m now at 30 minutes and #4 hex key.
But looks like a cheap plastic window, so it might be fucked and glueing shit on is your best option apart from replacing it.

Hmm alright, I'll pull it all off and if there's a detectable draft I'll see what I can do about sealing it like a white man

thanks for your help bros
