Wall mount without a wall
I have a monitor mount like picture related which is meant to bolt to a wall stud.
I'd like to attach a 2 by at the base of a desk sticking up and not have the top attached to anything. And attach the mount to that. It's a multi monitor mount that can extend, needs to hold 2 x 12 lbs plus it's own weight, say 40 lbs total. Plus when fully extended it's putting even more torsion, but I'm not sure how much.
Can I just put a right angle bracket on each side to attach it to the base? Maybe a big bolt straight up the middle? Should I reinforce it in 2 dimensions? In 3 dimensions?
Is this a dumb idea that I shouldn't attempt?

You want it vertical up in the air, instead of horizontal?

No, I want to use the stud mount but without a real (floor to ceiling) stud.

Like >>2950728 says just buy a desk mounted arm instead of a wall mounted arm. Plenty of options, I have some they work fine.

attach to desk or table at two points, screws, bolts, L brackets a combination of the above one at the desk level (highest) and one at the foot (lowest) such that your LEVER on the anchor end is the strongest by virtue of covering the most length. if you need to mount this in the center where your kitchen table doens't have a leg add a cross member at the floor making an upside down T between the two back legs. The crossmember can be a 1x3

A 2x4 can support 1000lbs vertically. I'd say go for it.

We're not talking about a vertical load here. We're talking about a cantilevered load trying to bend the vertical support.

We understand what OP is asking for. It's just stupid.
Even if he already has a wall mount one, most of the time the arm just slots into the plate that is attached to the wall. It's a standard mount and he can just take it out and put it in a desk mounted one.

Have you never held a 2x4?

Yes I have. Do you have a point you're trying to make or are you just asking a question for no reason?
