/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - SOLOVAIRS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Chink boondockers should be here in 3 weeks. They're going to be my go to summer boot. I only wish I could have gotten natural horween roughout, but hopefully light brown kudu roughout will be close enough.

Do you really need to size down on certain red wing boots or is sizing down just a meme of the past pushed due to insecurity of their feet looking big rather than the shoes actually fitting big?

yes, on all of them pretty much.
boots always run large. and you gotta remember, whatever your shoe size is in sneakers, that's not your real shoe size. so what you assume is your "real" size, because it's what you wore all your life, is not accurate. if you wear 10 in nikes or something, doesn't mean your feet are size 10

The more I see them, the more I dislike cap toe + stitchdown combination in general. The bulky seam is so ugly. With clarks here, the seam is not that pronounced. There wouldn't be this problem if you just handwelt.
These offshot PNW makers stand on shoulders of giant. The old bootmakers probably have a reason for doing things the way the did, even if it's for aesthetic. These new guys are not bootmakers themselves, they don't truly understand bootmaking at its core. They never stop to really think if these new "inventions" make sense or not.

>Preferably not $500 or whatever
If youre getting into boots it will be beneficial to start thinking about them in a similar category as phones and other big purchases. For phones, if you want an actually good phone from a good brand (apple, google, samsung, whoever makes good phones), most people accept you are looking at a ~$1000 purchase give or take a few hundred. Sure, you can get a $200 phone that works and can send messages and use apps, but you will notice the quality difference compared to an iPhone and so will other people. When it comes to boots, yes if youre used to buying shoes for $80 then $500 seems like a lot, but its actually not when you understand what youre buying. 300 is about the absolute lowest you can possibly go and get a boot still considered good and not the phone equivilent of a burner. For example Oak Street Bootmakers is currently selling their Storm Boot for 50% off (650 down to 325). This is an example of the cheapest decent boot you should be looking at. Otherwise, the low end of “actually good boots” is going to be something like Redwing, which usually is $400 for the type of boot youre looking for.

That being said, if you really just want something boot shaped that you can wear for like a year and see if its your style, sure you can get the Thursday Captain for 200. You might have noticed the OP says dont buy Thursday Boots. Why does it say that? Because they are shit, but they *are* shaped like a boot and probably better than something like Doc Martins. Better yet, get a pair of used Redwing Beckmans for ~200 on ebay, preferably from a seller that allows returns if they dont work. If they dont have a return window, make sure you know your boot size (its not the same as your sneakers).

>if they're comfortable and will last 1-2 years, I would be very happy.
The rule of thumb I go by is assume the boots fall apart the minute the warranty expires and ask yourself if that minimum amount of time (usually 1 year) is worth what you're paying for. If the boots make it that long, I'd say you got your money's worth and have little to complain about when you toss them.

>>18509557
>A resoleable shoe can absolutely last for life
Not without patching the worn upper. Even then, the major limiting factor for your Shitkickers of Theseus is the condition of the insole which will give out eventually if the footwear is worn with any regularity. Most cobbler shops will tell you that they're toast because replacing an insole is effectively rebuilding the entire boot.

black is typically considered dressier. I wear black boots with relaxed dress trousers like picrel because they give that slight bit of casual/military look that can bring dressier trousers into a casual outfit. Blacksmiths are more on the workboot side, so I would pair them with dark relaxed/wide chinos typically. The fitted (not wide/relaxed) pant look only really works for boots with jeans IMO and as the other anon said, you dont really want to wear blue jeans with black boots. Black jeans could work, but fitted black jeans and black boots is a specific look that I'm assuming you probably arent going for. Your top and layers can just be anything that builds from there.

There was a site called GothPikes.Com out there for a while, but I heard mixed reviews on quality and a lot of people who ordered and paid but never recieved their boots. Obviously not the site I would use.
I also found some okay looking ones on eBay, but eBay has always felt a bit sketchy to me and the price seems a bit high, especially for ones with novelty coffin and skull shaped buckles, which my experience indicates just do not hold up well over time compared to basic buckles. I'd rather find a company that specializes in pikes, preferably without a cuban heel. Anyone know of some good bootmakers that make pikes, at least?

if they have the custom boot builder you could get the 719 in their black leather maybe - costs a little extra maybe, but not much. It's a shorter and narrower boot, but they only have if it ready to ship in 2 brown leathers.
Other than that just go for something more basic with a cemented sole. if it's just for work you don't need the stitch down or goodyear welt which adds extra cost. this general is more about "heritage" made boots and tends to stay away from injection melded or cemented footwear although they can be fine footwear if done right.
Check out Kleman (French brand) for comfortable, well made cemented-construction leather boots.
https://kleman-france.com/en/men/shoes/boots.html
They do have some models with sidewall stitching as well as cementing, so those would be more durable long term - usually, that makes them a little more expensive.

No. Thursday's already cut every corner that can be cut to maintain that price point. Got pic rel (try-ons) in the mail earlier today (haven't taken a pic with them on yet). The Waxed Mohawk suede is surprisingly firm. It's "Maraca" so I was expecting it would be lighter, but it's really a dark sand kind of color. I suppose it'll look lighter once they're worn in. They feel a little big at size 10.5, but idk if I could have gone another half-size down

Meme advice. They will mold to your feet over time, but that's not a reason to get boots that are way too small. Key areas are the ball and the flex point. The upper should just about touch or gently cradle your feet there like most shoes.

Yeah besides the quality. I bought a pair of made in England docs at a thrift store to compare to my solovairs which I bought new. Solovairs are way more durable but yeah same style and considered a low quality boot in regards to other $200+ boot brands. If you want the aesthetic opt for the solovairs or squeeze into a vintage pair of docs.

Good way to prematurely dry out and age your insole. Your socks will feel a bit slick and gross for a while, for little to no real discernible effect. FWIW, I did put some mild conditioner (Bick 4 or VSC can't remember) along the lining of my Red Wings before, and I don't know if it actually did anything. Just break the damn boots in

He’s just implying that for the price point of solovairs there are better alternatives for quality boots. If you like the style and look of docs/solovairs buy solovairs over docs. I have a pair of moc toe Thorogoods that are much more durable compared to my solovairs but I like the look of broken in solovairs so I got those over Docs.
