Hey, you guys know what would be a small but really helpful addition whenever it's next time to update the Janny system and interface? If when a reported post in the queue has the date of when the post itself was made on it, maybe not necessarily in full detail as that's probably not important, but if that post was made today, or if the post was made say, 47 days ago.
This would help slightly whenever someone goes and reports posts in very old and even archived threads.
Optionally, that posts in archived threads can only be reported for GR1, or anything else where deleting an archived post would still be useful and necessary, like for NSFW images on blue boards, spam links, or dox.

Another feature would be for fraudulent reports. Now, if mods got a warn/ban request for every single fake report that would just be swamping you guys with needless shit. Instead, for when a post exhibits no obvious reason as to why it would break any rules, you click a button for that which clears that report and then adds a number to a counter for the guy who reported it (the janny wouldn't know this number).
Thus, if a janny suspects someone is making a bunch of fake reports, a mod can go and check and either see a counter reflecting the number of times recent reports by them have been rebuked. Optionally they look in the user's report history and see if a lot of the recent ones are rebuked.
Obvious exception for making a fake GR1 report, where perhaps that's sent as a request towards a mod's queue about making a fake illegal report, and it's up to them if there's any action to take.

I'm thinking maybe this could save both jannies and mods some time in certain situations.

I understand that we've all been janitors and moderators for varying amounts of time, but I also want to acknowledge that we are all in this together for the site and for the users. This post is to represent something that I want to put out there for everyone: how is your mental health?

I understand that we are exposed to the most abhorrent nonsense users have to offer, and I want to make sure everyone is doing okay. Sometimes the stuff posted on site can get to a person, myself included, with things in their personal life and things that get posted online.

Recently in my life, there have been a lot of changes, like moving away from family and friends and adjusting to a new way of life, so what I ask of you today is:

How are you doing?

The idea is if you need to provide screenshots or logs related to janitoring that you upload it here instead of hosting it somewhere else.

What possibilities actually exist for 4Chan to utilize Large Language Model technology for the purposes of assisting with moderating the website? My idea here isn't so much a plain autojanny doing all the work, as much as a special tool for assisting us with doing some of the most important work, which falls under GR1.

Say that someone like the Babyshitter is subtly altering the image so that it doesn't get caught by the autoblock thing, like he's currently doing, what if we had an AI bot which had used the content put into the autoblock as its training data for the purposes of identifying subtly altered versions of it?
Then that bot patrols a board and then scans through every currently active thread for if someone posts something like that, and if someone does, it immediately makes a global GR1 report and maybe also pings the moderation channel on Discord.
A crucial question here is if the bot should be given any operational autonomy for this task, and thus be able to request/issue bans and delete posts. AI can be very fallible, so I'm inclined to say probably not.


What would be the practical and logistical constraints in developing this kind of bot, and then operating it? My primary idea with this is to deal with those posting illegal content like CSAM, and possibly certain people operating their own spam bots (ergo fighting fire with fire).

Finally, if this is at all possible to implement, what do we name the thing? Murphy? Fagballs?

Unsure how much information on this can be shared, if any, but I'm curious what criteria is considered when deciding to open a new board. Even as a janitor, it's a very opaque process that doesn't seem to follow any consistent logic (observable).

I can offer a few examples from the newer boards.
/vt/ was obviously created due to immense demand for it, and it has quickly grown to becoming one of the most active boards on the site. In contrast, it feels like it's been well over a decade of users begging for some kind of internet celebrity board and those requests have gone unanswered, despite the fact that there is clearly interest in it (/v/ janitors will have firsthand experience seeing this demand from deleting threads on this subject). What's the difference between these two things? Is it just a subjective thing, that the 4chan team does not want standalone boards dedicated to certain topics?

Then at the same time, we get boards like /qst/ or /vmg/ that don't even get 1000 posts in a day and nobody was really asking for, so clearly demand isn't the only thing considered, or even necessary.

For my part I'm asking this because I think it may be worth considering some kind of /ai/ board for posting AI generated content, whether it be audio, images, video, text, etc. /g/ has several ai related generals and most don't discuss the technology but are instead just dumping grounds for content, and I think there's an opportunity here to separate that space and allow it to scale. It's just hard to argue for this when I don't really understand what the common thread between newly created boards is.

has the possibility of using an LLM to screen posts been considered yet?

taking the global rules and providing them as context for either a cloud based (expensive? prices are coming down quickly though) or locally based (llama or mixtral8b? cheaper, buy a 5090 or something lol and run it there) LLM, then providing it instructions to rate posts based on rulebreaking probability could add another method to get posts flagged to moderation staff without relying solely on user reports. posts above a certain rule breaking threshold as determined by the model could be added to either the report queue or a new queue.

The existing /jp/ thread was last posted in in 2014 so I think that it could be time for a new one.

Just to throw it out there at the very beginning: from a moderation perspective, /jp/ is doing just fine. Everybody is very happy in /jp/. The absolutely disruptive idiots have gone away which basically singlehandedly makes /jp/ far more manageable than the dumpster fire it was for some years of its existence.

However, as a user, there are parts of it that I'm not entirely happy with. /jp/ has the peculiar pathology it's difficult to discuss anywhere because the designated zone /qa/ seems to house all of /jp/'s ban evaders over the last five years and makes having a conversation about it impossible. So I was hoping to use this thread to discuss some of the issues that I think affect /jp/ as a board in general.

A SFW locals board.

Uses a list-style layout similar to /f/ but tweaked a little bit, with a locked set of topics for regions in the USA. (Regions should be local enough to be relevant to users, but not so numerous that it makes posting too sparse or hard to moderate.. perhaps by area code, or groups of area codes in low-population areas) And some select international regions.

A user is only allowed to post in one /loc/ board. If a user (IP address) tries to post in a /loc/ board different from their origin board (determined by the first board they post in), they get a message stating they cannot change their "home" board for 30 days after their original post.

/loc/ region sub-boards are text-only like /news/, and have strict link-posting limitations. If any links are allowed perhaps only to a white-list of major websites like X, facebook (including facebook marketplace), news websites, etc.

Furthermore, we could employ stricter word filtering for posts, so people aren't just spamming the n-word.

Additionally, this could open up location specific advertising opportunities for local companies within relevant region boards.

Why is the off-topic ban so short? It should be longer.

I'd make posts auto-lock or auto-sage after X number of days (determined by board, similar to sage limit) so that necroposting wouldn't happen. also get rid of the archive and thread pruning after 10 pages. instead, you could see posts from years and years ago, kind of like a more normal forum. maybe prune reply images after a year to save on disk space. I think there's a lot of valuable information on 4chan that disappears after a while. delete IP addresses after they hit autosage for sure.

I remember a discussion here about "why don't we have user registration" and there were some ideas about letting anyone make posts, but you need to have an account to upload images and/or make new threads. I think that'd be a good idea too, to combat spam and/or illegal content. I know that email addresses are free, but it adds another barrier of entry. it's not perfect, and it wouldn't be 4chan, but it might make things easier to clean up problem posters. if you have a user account, then you could have a tripcode assigned to your account and optionally (default: off) include it with your post.

Please avoid making threads in “general” or “template” formats. Avoid chaining threads, copy-pasting OPs, backlinks, and the like.

Avoid redirecting all discussion of a series to a single thread. Users are free to discuss similar content in separate threads as long as threads are not being spammed.

As commonly recurring threads tend to suffer from degradation of quality over time, posts inside such threads may be held to higher standards in terms of rules 6 (Quality of Posts) and 9 (Reposting).

Threads in /a/ should be primarily based on anime/manga discussion. Consider using either >>>/e/, >>>/y/, >>>/c/ or >>>/cm/ for image sharing threads, and >>>/bant/ or >>>/trash/ for generals which have long since exhausted all fresh discussion. Mods will be more proactive in moving or removing threads when deemed necessary.

Discussion should be centered on series and characters, not the posters or communities that discuss said series and characters.

Aim for original discussion or content, both when creating OPs and posting inside threads, and allow threads to die naturally.

Request threads belong on >>>/r/ or >>>/wsr/, and “spoonfeeding” is not encouraged as that degrades the point/validity of using those other boards. Lurk and learn, rather than demand chores from the board.

Threads which are /a/ related but have no clear alternative forms (such as buyfag/drawfag) are allowed as long as they follow these guidelines.

I humbly ask that the dev team adds support for WEBP images. Almost everything on Google images is WEBP format and as a frequent phoneposter (don’t laugh) I find myself having to spend unnecessary time screenshotting the image, cropping, and then uploading.

It seems that it's gotten into a group of users from /b/ that it would be a good idea to spam /e/ to get to one million posts. So if you have access to, please do give it a bit more attention over the next few days.

tl;dr a religion and philosophy board might be a good idea, but it also might not be

I janny /pol/ and see a lot of religious threads (mostly Christianity and Paganism) that go through. /lit/ jannies I believe have to deal with the philosophy side of off-topic posts, and /his/ jannies have to deal with probably both (correct me if I'm wrong). The main problem is that these people spur good conversation most of the time - but it's off-topic for that board. I think a good analogy would be talking about video games on /g/. I want to talk about operating systems and hardware on /g/, not Skyrim.

My proposal is a religion and philosophy board, to talk about theology and philosophical... things. I don't have a good idea of what it *is*, but I have a very good idea of what could go wrong. Please remember that I'm coming from a /pol/ perspective so I don't really have much to say from the "philosophy" dept. So here's the list of holes that I'm aware of immediately:

* Religion and philosophy are not the same thing. Is this close enough of a distinction to let these topics share a board?
* Religion has been known to cause friction throughout literally all of written history. See: jews and muslims, christians and jews, muslims and christians, protestants and catholics, catholic and orthodox, sunni and shiite... It creates a breeding ground for hostility.
* The difference between theology and piousness - "what did the author mean by this" vs. hypothetical "prayer threads". The main question is "who is this board for?". Is it for people who want to pray with other followers? Is it for people who want to discuss the logical implications of religious laws? Is it for both?
* We already have /his/, /pol/, and /lit/ - this is the hardest argument to counter because it's true. The race is on to find the real-world example threads that would get the off-topic BR on all three boards.

I propose a new chatfilter for the word 'chud'.

It's become probably one of the most commonly used words I see used in troll posts and I think its become some kind of trigger word that immediately derails every single thread into culture war bullshit. It's like clockwork.

I'm not sure what we should change it to, but the word has become too powerful.

Is there a reason why when I click on images, they don't open right away? It sometimes takes minutes, not to even load but just to open (which loads almost instantly). It's not always like this but it has been recently, on either wifi or mobile data my connection is fine

The link in the /sci/'s sticky is dead because the guy who hosted the sites.google.com wiki has been banned by Google for violating ToS. The link used to lead to a (dead) wiki which was never worked on or finished.

What is the point of these? Let us consider "False Report or Announcing Report [Warn]" for instance. Janitors cannot distinguish between repeat offenders, so if someone repeats this offense, I assume they will just keep getting the same warn messages?

This is for the Dev since I noticed that there were changes made to the report queue:
1) In .report-controls you're setting the display to flex but you don't seem to know what flexbox is capable of (https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/). What do I mean by this? I mean that there's no reason to give the clear button margin-right: auto !important when flexbox is perfectly capable of keeping the clear button away from the BR button. The same goes for the other margins on the buttons since gap: is perfectly capable of automatically setting those for you without you having to say that buttons have a 2px horizontal margins. display: flex actually means that you're using the default values for flexbox (row, nowrap, flex-start, etc.) without actually knowing that you can change some of those and thus not need to use margins to do what you're trying to do. Simply putting each group of buttons into their own separate divs and then using justify-content: space-between to put each div at opposite ends of the report yields the same results without having to use margins. The same can be said for centering the buttons without having to use padding.
2) From a UI standpoint this is actually worse than before because the smaller and closer together the buttons are the easier it is to make mistakes due to miss clicks. Particularly the File Deletion button is only 20 x 25px which is pretty small and on top of that it has a 1px margin with the Delete button. Having 4 or 5px wide gaps between the buttons doesn't impact the aesthetics at all and makes everything less prone to mistakes. The same can be said for putting the full words back in rather than shorthands. Functionality is way more important than fancy 1px shadows killing posts that only needed file deletion.
3) The Delete button has no mouse hover labels and the BR button uses the browser built in labels rather than the custom black ones that the File and Clear buttons have.

TEL AVIV - An online forum "www.4chan.org" recently made changes to its report queue and have sparked controversy among users and experts alike, with some calling into question the motives and expertise of the developers behind the update.

According to a post by a 4chan janitor, the changes made to the report queue were flawed and unnecessary. The janitor pointed out several issues with the update, including the use of the "display: flex" property without fully utilizing the capabilities of flexbox, and the small and close together buttons making it prone to mistakes due to miss clicks.

Real question, why are these captchas necessary?

I propose that they actual stifle many posters who want to participate in simple mindless conversation. I've been on the internet my whole life and even I still struggle sometimes to do these captchas.

They look weird on mobile (which makes up the majority of all internet traffic in the world), it takes a couple tries to get my finger on the slider button and half the time my phone tries to "swipe back" when I try to grab the slider, and even when I type the 6 character captcha I still sometimes get it wrong because they are just too weird. I'm not retarded but I seriously encounter a problem with the captcha like 30% of the time.

From my point of view, the single biggest problem with the site from the moderation perspective is that it's too easy to evade bans, especially in the phoneposting world. I've been jannying for years now and am constantly dealing with both overt ban-evaders and people I'm pretty sure are only shitposting because they're confident they can evade a ban easily.

Suppose that in order to post on the site, you first had to register a username and password using a unique e-mail address. We could even build in a delay of, say, 24 hours to the registration. Posting would be exactly the same - the username has no bearing on what displays on your post, it's just required for you to log in to post.

Outwardly, the site would be identical, but with this new barrier to posting, all of a sudden a ban evader needs a new e-mail address every time they want to shitpost again, and/or an additional wait time. The pain of doing this would make the number of ban evaders drop dramatically and post quality would skyrocket as a result - not because ban evaders make up a large proportion of posters, but because their constant shitposting fosters a culture of shitposting.

Think about it. Tell me I'm crazy.

I've seen some grumbling the last week or so on /tg/ about the thread lifetime / whatever the proper name for "duration-based autosage" instead of bump limit is. As far as they can tell, it's been set to 7 days, somewhat recently.

Reactions to this have not been particularly egregious, but anons have noticed it and seem nonplussed as to why it's been done. A few of the slower generals have wondered what they did to get put on autosage.

Anyway, I don't really give a fuck, but I figured that the mods might want to know, and this seemed like the best way to leave consolidated feedback I've observed from boardwide discussion, rather than the fast-moving discord or clogging one or two mods' inboxes.

No set topic, the purpose of the board is an alternate thread mode I'll call OPost for now:
In OPost, whoever makes the OP has the ability to enable/disable optional thread features at post time, like those found in threads on other boards. The OP can also modify certain, superficial CSS values of any individual post made in the thread, or the CSS of the thread as a whole. These changes have no effect outside the thread, but within the thread they override browser cookie settings where applicable.

OPost takes the idea of the OP setting the stage and tone of a thread and gives it some aesthetic trappings to make use of and enjoy, whether for other anons or for their own sake. It doesn't fundamentally change the relationship between OP posts vs. replies, but rather adds a new aspect to it, and none of the settings could be used to modify the actual contents of other anons' posts. As since OP is the only one who has access, everybody in the thread knows who is responsible if some change does occur, making a unique interaction in the thread between the OP and other posters should they identify themselves.

It is a board I would be very interested in using, and I imagine the thread mode could complement different topics and posting styles better than the default thread mode.

For the past decade, off-topic threads have been a huge problem. 4 AM threads, deep sea threads, /v/ mansion, celeb drama, and so on. These apparently make up a good 50-90% of reports on /pol/, /tv/, /v/ and so on. We spend a lot of effort dealing with these every day, and that's great.

But one thing bothers me: Shouldn't these guys have a way to make these threads? Obviously, people really want them. Yes we have /b/, [s4s], /bant/, and so on, but because their userbases are different, that need is not met. "Well, they should just get over it" - Maybe, but that doesn't solve the problem of the endless reports. Their problem becomes our problem. "Every time we've tried in the past, it failed" - Maybe we've been going about it wrong.

I want to propose an idea called community tags. This sort of content-filter tag is ubiquitous on Reddit, but the example I have in mind now is GameFAQs: Every board on GameFAQs has the option to mark a thread with the "Community" tag. This tag essentially means "Off-topic": It's not about the game or console; you just want to chat with people of that community. An off-topic thread without the "Community" tag gets deleted. Naturally, you can filter out all "Community" threads with a single click on the board page. This would honestly transfer perfectly to 4chan - I can't imagine a single reason why not - and it would solve the off-topic problem overnight.

What's the most well-behaved board on 4chan? /po/? /lit/? /trv/?

What are the primary sources of janitor attrition? Frustration, loss of interest in 4chan, IRL interference?

By this I mean either leaving the team, or else steadily increasing inactivity over time.

I tentatively invite people to speak both about their own cases as well as what they have observed in others. As I understand it, nobody can see who you are here unless they have admin tools on, so I am confident that nobody will be called to answer before the commissariat for anything they might say.

This guy's been spamming EqG threads for over a year now. I don't browse those threads but it's so tiring to hit him for evasion and then see the exact same spam a few hours later. He clearly has access to a huge amount of IPs and probably some sort of custom script where he plugs in threads he doesn't like. (Most of the time his spam comes in from a few IPs posting at the same time)

I assume the fact that he's not rangebanned means he's using residential proxies or something. Would it at least be possible to set up banned words for his usual spam? Would it help at all? He has a few phrases he alternates between. https://pastebin.com/45bYiKMz

Judging by the massive percentage of off-topic reports on every major board, it's clear that people want a place to say is on their mind, but also feel like the current avenues for this (/b/, /r9k/, [s4s], /bant/, /qa/) aren't good enough. And I get it. Those boards are actually used for a pretty narrow set of things: /b/ is for porn, /r9k/ for relationships, [s4s] and /bant/ for... whatever it is they do, and /qa/ for schizoposting. So if you make a thread unrelated to what's popular there, it's not going to get replies. If there were a genuinely good board for discussing any random thing, I'm sure most off topic reports would disappear. The question is, do you think it's possible?

I think most importantly here, it has to be SFW. But to prevent it from becoming like /qa/, there would also have to be some level of quality control. And this is the hard part. No one wants to post on a board that's 90% basedjaks, but how do you stop it? Would you just ban basedjaks? Maybe in the short term it works, but people will find something else to force, and you can't just keep adding new stuff to the blacklist. But you know, basedjaks and schizoposting already count as rule 6 violations, so without even changing any rules or making a new board, we could clean /qa/ up so that people are incentivized to post there instead of making off-topic posts all across the site. Just get a few janitors willing to enforce this and the other global rules, and it should be fine.

What do you think? A lot of people dislike /qa/ because there's almost nothing but schizo spam, but if we clean it up by applying global rules 6 and 10 a bit more actively, I'm sure it would gain new life and give anons something they clearly want, which is a place to freely discuss whatever they want without getting drowned in porn and spam.
