/roon/ Running General - Yellow Fever Edition
>Advice for new runners
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week)
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans)

I've started doing dedicated flexibility training, primarily because I just think it'd be really fucking cool to be able to do the splits like JCVD (gifrel)
Anyone else do dedicated stretching like that? Do you find it makes your legs and joints more resilient to shit like DOMS and injuries?

Gotta say I did some hot yoga recently and that shit just feels pretty good and am sure it helps recovery somehow (even if it's just because of vasodilation n shit)

i rooned
this one felt bad, guess that's what I get for taking a week off (fucking work), thought I might throw up the sweet&sour chicken I had for lunch
my groin hurt a little as well but not too bad, hopefully it will be injured enough to show up on the ultrasound next week
i saw two buns, some baby ducks, one heron in the river, and three herons fly by. One of the flying herons took a big shit, luckily it didn't land on me. It reminded me of playing market garden in BF1942 and watching the bomber fly by (except the heron didn't crash into anything)
anyway... so begins the soomer of rooning #3, where I will roon until i take it to far and hurt myself in the fall, again

that was an outdated and poorly made research/experiment/conclusion - nobody really does exactly that and if you don't (as you dont) then it does not really matter only the ratio (concentric/shortened length work compared to extended length work plus stretching)

I like to stretch my calves after running tho because I feel them shortening up and getting stiff

No such thing unless you're a professional athlete. No one in this thread is a professional athlete, the only metric for running should be whether it feels good or not. then explain the guy doing all out 5k attempts week after week, month after month and barely progressing at all
heart rate 173 with an average pace of 10min/mile
training for 2 years
EXPLAIN IT
I've been doing 5 zone 2 sessions and 1 hard interval session per week
and in 1 month I've got my heart rate down to 137bpm at a 6min/km pace on my long runs (13km)
and I was about the same place as the 5km guy is now when I started

I don't mean to be hating on you, I mean I am, clearly, I wish I wasn't. I want to encourage you and be kind. Your heart rate is too high, you're going too fast, you should have 1 fast session per week and 5-6 slow easy base building sessions. Go faster on your fast day and do intervals. Like 1 minute on and one minute off, 20 reps. Go hard, fast as you can.
Spend most of your days just accumulating mileage, keep your heart rate below 150, I try to stick around 130.
Your pace will go up, your heart rate will stay the same, your system will adapt.
I believe in you, sorry for being a jerk

I'm just coming back from an injury (and also had to take last week off), that's why my hr is so high. Last summer, I had to push really hard to get it above 145. By next week it will average in the 160s, and then soon after the 150s as conditioning comes back. Once I'm past the initial shock, I'll be able to do the 1 hr long runs again, easily. I've done this before. 130 is too low though, why even bother?
Also I'm not going all out for a 5K every day. I'm just using that as a general benchmark. I could do 1 mile or 5 miles or 2.34 miles or whatever distance if I wanted
Also EVERY time I try intervals, I get injured. My body doesn't react well to the changes.

Ah okay that's all fair. Good stuff. Glad to hear you have recovered. Injuries are terrible. Also I think 130 is a good zone for base building, aerobic capacity increases without causing too much pediatric damage, it's ideal really and has been working for me. Playing the long game, letting the pace come to me as I keep energy output low. I push hard on interval days. HR gets up to 180.

>Glad to hear you have recovered.
I'm actually not recovered, my groin isn't really healing, so I just decided to start running with the injury, at least until the pain gets too bad again. I have an ultrasound scheduled for next week to look into it further. But if I take any more time off, I'll lose my mind. Also this is the best time to go running here because there's so much wildlife out.
But anyway yes, as you can see on my spreadsheet, last November I was up to 40 miles per week. I'd like to get back to that. Also, all of the gaps in the charts are for injuries... always pretty much the same groin problem.

I started running to work (ca 4 miles). Might have gone a bit too hard as a beginner or messed something up, for some reason my left ankle is fucked up now and it doesn't seem to get better. It's not swollen or anything, it just hurts when I put weight on it and bend it slightly. It's hard to explain.
I hope being banished to the bicycle realm (doesn't hurt with that) until it's healed doesn't steal all my running stamina gains, I was slowly getting somewhere.

>Stress fractures commonly occur when there is a sudden change in physical activity or increase in training without enough rest time for the bone to adapt and remodel.
Welp, rip, sounds like that could be it, thanks. Suspiciously enough it started just when I had enough stamina to no longer need walking breaks during the run, that might have just been too much to fast. I'll just have to let it heal for a few weeks and learn from it. Hope the bone comes back stronger at least.

Make more of a bun or something maybe higher up so there's less of a big thing dangling off your head. Also maybe hairbands or some shit can help keep things in place. Grew out my hair during covid but ended up buzzing it off because I couldn't deal with this type of shit. I was still swiping away ghost manes from my face for weeks after.

You might also want to check your hair washing routine itself. I recently got comments about my scalp looking irritated from the hairdresser. I switched from some organic lavender oil containing bs to a perfume free hypoallergenic brand and it seems to have calmed down. Honestly that might have been part of why I hated my long hair too. The drying part is kind of difficult though because I think having wet hair for a long time is just as cursed as frying your hair/scalp with a hair dryer.

New runner (5 weeks).
Advice/critique my current plans/routine please.

Currently at 25km/weekly volume, averaging 06:00 min/km if I run an hr on a good day.

Goals are: 40km weekly volume > run a HM in 2hrs > increase my 10k time to 55min, then 50min > M under 4hrs.

I run 3x/w, 1 long run (Z2-3), 1 tempo (Z3), 1 easy (Z2)

I increased my weekly volume too quickly and already got past 2w of knee injury, I'm fine now, but still get mild knee niggle sometimes which im anxious about.

I'm currently increasing my weekly volume by around 3km/w (10%) I will do this until im at 40km.
I don't bother with interval runs or high tempo- runs yet (scared of injury if I combine adding volume with adding intensity, and I also dont have a sportswatch yet for pace tracking).

I think I will integrate those after I reached my first goal of 40km weekly 4x/w and have been injury free?

I no bulli.

I always take 20% off of whatever calories burned numbers I see. The other anon was pretty accurate - 100 cal/mi is a solid metric. That said, you're overweight so that will be too conservative.

Best advice I can give you is weigh all your food and track it. Yeah it sucks but if you don't do it, it'll either fuck up everything or just slow down your progress. And I mean everything - small snacks, oils you use to cook with, that nibble of dark chocolate - everything.

If you aim for a -1000cal daily deficit, my guess until you get autistic with the food scale, you'll be at a -500cal deficit at best. It's easy to over eat.

I've realized I can eat little after runs (banana, protein shake, greek yogurt) but if I don't eat most of my food early in the day, my runs suck and I'm in a shitty mood so I eat 2/3 of my calories in the morning, run during noon, and then eat snacks within a couple hour window. It's borderline intermittent fasting.

Be proud of your progress, take things a day at a time, and keep going.

well either way I wish you all the best in your training, I guess I'm just worried that you judging by your heart rate data you might be pushing it too hard, sometimes it's better to be easy on the body, even if you have the willpower to push it harder, I always use heart rate as an indicator of effort and I constantly hold myself back from pushing too hard, I have a long history of abusing myself to the point of injury in almost any physical field I try out
having the heart rate monitor and keeping 80-90% of my runs in zone 2 has been a great exercise for me, in regards to limiting how hard I push and also limiting how often I get injured (so far so good with this style of training)

sometimes when I walk somewhere with my gf I jog at the same pace she walks, I mean if you think about it skipping rope is basically running in one place if your feet move at different times, I believe you can run as slow as you want until the point of just jogging on the spot
so I think you could run slower

The rule is typically 80/20 where 80% of your runs are easy (aka zone 2/slow) and 20% are hard (aka hard aerobic/anaerobic/speed/tempo).
You can build a base at zone 2 but it plateaus. You need the harder runs to round out the training and build up the speed. Also, all these rules aren’t hard fast rules, they’re more like guidelines. Your “easy” runs can be zone 3, or you could have a 75/25 split. Zone 2 has become popular because it is easy to understand for normies.

it really depends where you are starting from. if you have a good base level of fitness from other sports then you are way ahead of the guy who has never done any cardio before.

you can make much quicker gains in the gym particularly starting from a low level.
running gains are slow and steady, built over time. it's the consistency that matters. it might not feel like much training for 3 months only to knock 1 minute off your 10k time but then you do another 3 months and another 3 months and another 3 months...

My gf gets excruciating ankle pain, sometimes knee, during very easy, slow beginner jogs (like, early C25k) in a somewhat hilly area. Even a slight slope exacerbates this. Her BMI is about 30 but I really doubt that this degree of pain is solely due to weight. Basic things like stretching, calf raises haven't helped.
Any ideas or does she need to see a physio?

Got a 10k race in 2 weeks. Goal is sub 38 (current pb is 38:0X), ideally even sub 37:30.
My current main focus is sub 3h marathon in October. When I hit that target I will likely focus on shorter distances because running fast is more fun than running long (at least for me). Maybe then sub 17 or even sub 16 will become achievable.

Sony WF-1000XM5's. Sound great, consistently rated the best wireless earbuds you can get and never feel lose or have that stethoscope effect. If you can afford them absolutely go for them. Prior to these I had Sony WF-1000XM3's which lasted for five years and would have kept going strong but I dropped one of the earbuds which tumbled down a flight of stairs and understandably stopped working. I also scammed Best Buy and got a brand new pair for only $120, so that certainly helped.
