Martial arts
I used to do boxing in high school (3 years). I'm now 36. Thinking of starting karate. Which type is good?
Should I do shotakon karate? Or I have an ashihabara karate school right next to my house, it seems the best for me.

(I already did TKD (Taekwondo not Total Kike Death) and Muay Thai and I didn't like it much but ashihabara karate seems cool and more useful from videos)

Before I start, I wanted to get a bit more /fit/, so I lost a lot of weight, got down to 77 kg from 88, I'm 187 cm. Still no visible abs but I think I should be good to go

Kyokushin is the only non-meme one with lots of gyms and the least amount of bullshido but it's still a meme compared to kickboxing.
There's this but it's literally just watered down kickboxing, maybe do sambo.

I'd say kickboxing took things from karate that worked and got rid of all the useless stuff like kata, no punches to the head etc.
But yeah since ashihara karate is basically kyokushin it'll make you very tough so go for it.

Kickboxing on itself is useful but i cant be a judge, maybe it will be more lethal alongside judo or greco roman or plain mma. Avoid bjj.
My kickboxing coach taught us muay thai as well and we had plain boxing technical training a few times, these sports overlap to a certain degree (besides boxing ofc) but there's lots of miniscule details that make the difference unless you're not competing or taking it seriously

Ashihara karate is extremely underrated, is kyokushin karate with footwork, should definitely train in it.
Shotokan is only useful if you cross train in something with full contact to develop the techniques.
Useful things from shotokan are the blitzing steps, that their shots are nontelegraphed by virtue of karate punching form, the low wide stances are excellent for leg drive and weight shifting and the karate side step, those are all excellent things to add to your arsenal but you don't need to train shotokan to learn them.
Ashihara is more effective because it has the intensity and force of kyokushin but unlike kyokushin that only thinks of exchanging punches by enduring more, ashihara uses a lot of pivots to get angles and strike, it also utilize standing armlocks so it's a way better style to learn.

I'm like 90% sure that you're trolling ("shotakon karate" and "ashihabara"? What's next, "ne-tori style"?), but on the off chance that you're just full of typos:
>shotokan
worthless style, literally designed to keep primary schoolers from learning more dangerous martial arts. Kyokushin was developed to make shotokan somewhat useable, kyokushinkai took it further, but those are still mid-tier at best.

I haven't seen a single karate style outside of asia that would be worth learning. in the western world, if you can't get military training, FMA is the best choice, and traditional kungfu (from schools headquartered in non-communist asia) a far off second. Don't mistake that for chinese kunguf, btw. The commies destroyed the old schools the moment they rose to power, and forced those few teachers that fell in line to teach an "integrated" style that is absolutely useless for everything other than movies. Thei idea was that since martial arts schools had been highly influential, and constantly fighting each other, they'd make them all teach the same thing, encourage students to switch back and forth between schools, and generalyy sabotage any power base the schools might have. It worked, but made them useless in combat.

Protip: If you're considering pseudo-japanese styles, listen to how they count their strikes. If their "4" sounds like "shi", or anything remotely similar, they're a fake mcdojo. It's a weird quirk in Japanese, where most numbers are spoken in Chinese when counting, while only 4 and 7 are spoken in Japanese. Well, not that the Japanese even count their techniques in the first place, as far as I can tell, that's purely a chinese thing.

in all seriousness, I'm mostly looking at the ashihara karate school near me, it seems good. this is their page on YouTube, I can't tell from them whether it's bad or not:
https://www.youtube.com/user/katanaskcze/videos

I used to be a karate (and every martial "art") hater when I did boxing but I'm old and I don't want to do something where I get punched in the face. I'm also not interested in competing. Just wanna supplement my old boxing stuff with something new in the arsenal.
I didn't like muay thai because it seemed full of psychos and like it's made for 30 kg small thais. I'm tall.
ashihara karate seems basically like the only reasonable option, and maybe from that eventually graduate to MMA if I become more thirsty for conflict (and if I like it)

My normal BJJ gym doesn't do classes on the weekends, and I was kind wondering if it'd be beneficial to looking into taking up Judo on those off days or if they should just be kept as rest days. You might end up enjoying judo more and wanting to focus on that (or maybe periodize, spend a month doing jitz and a month doing judo, or whatever). Judo and bjj really are two sides of the same coin, I sort of think of them as different sports but the same martial art, so even if you try it for a while you're bound to pick up something useful for when you go back to bjj
But recovery is so individual, just need to take care and be mindful of how you feel. Rest days are worth keeping if you can

>this is their page on YouTube, I can't tell from them whether it's bad or not
You really can't tell?
I just looked at four of their vids, delierately choosing ones with dark belts (brown, black, red - can't tell on my screen). Starting with what I'd expect you to notice immediately from your boxing experience:
>excessive windup on the punches, no body movement
That means weak punches. A proper straight, even a karate-style one, will break ribs easily. They're doing punches that have the strength of jabs, with the openings of a wide hook.
>bouncy footwork
This is a typical weakness of zero-contact karate and taekwondo. It covers up the start of kicks, making them harder to block, but also massively decreases their strength. More importantly, though, it means that during the kick, they're off the ground. A halfway trained fighter, or just someone who's sufficiently mad, can just rush in, and they'll go down hard. That doesn't even ned technique, you just need to push forward.
Related to this, those guys seem o mostly lack forward drive. There was one vid where a guy actually did push forward, and that was a completely one-sided fight, with the other dude just turtling up after a few seconds - but I'd expect everybody who's cleared for competition to be able to both push forward and deal with pressure. One out of eight is worse than what you'd see in priary school brawls.
>low guard
I know, they don't permit strikes to the head at amateur level (though considering that they're fighting at shinkyokushinkai, they should be permitting them at pro level). Still, it's a bad habit to get into.

contd
Anonymous No.76372056 >>76373969
>>76368731
>>76372038
contd

Now, the things you might not be aware of, since you don't have full-contact background:
>excessively high kicks
Not the ones to the head, if you have an opening, those can work. However, the short, pushing kicks to the chest are pointless and risky. Normally, they should go to the center of gravity, so just below the navel. Higher than that, and you're bound to be pushed over (if the other guy pushes forward).
>no control of distance
They're constantly getting into a distance where elbows and hooks would be more efficient than straights, yet keep punching straight. They could also end up in a grapple at that range (not sure if shinkyokushinkai rules permit grapples and throws, though - I know kyokushinkai does, at least). Even headbutts would work there.

tl;dr: They set off all the red flags for me, and I'd go as far as to claim that their training will make you a weaker fighter, not stronger.

btw,
>MMA
I would recommend against. It's not as bad as that pseudo-Karate, but if you don't want to compete, a proper martial art will give you safer training, and more useful skills. Like I wrote before, FMA is what I'd go with (Dog brothers, preferably - They have quite a presence in your country afaik), or just go straight to paramilitary training. In Czech republic, there should be plenty available.

Depends on the guy you are fighting with. But you will be certainly better than 90% of the people if you train semi-regularly.

Also I was "warned" for "ironic shitposting". What kind of shit is that? Since when does 4chan care about post quality

Ok hell yeah. I feel like njj + muay thai guys also don't have great physiques, whereas boxers and wrestlers usually look like greek gods. that's a huge component of it for me too. come ot think of it, why are most MMA guys not that impressive aesthetically while boxers/ wrestlers have such good physiques?

there isn't anything special about bjj, it's all marketing hype
it's genuinely the worst possible base you could choose as a martial art, all the ways it's wrong in the assumptions it makes about the nature of grappling and training practices are too numerous to even go into here

The only useful parts of MT are leg blocks. Throws from clinch are kinda good but it's just shitty greco/judo. Kicks are useless against someone who knows how to block, they account for a minuscule percentage of KOs in MMA. Knees are just useless. Elbows are kinda ok sometimes.

>useless stuff like kata
Kata is not useless, but mcdojos make it look useless because they don't use it correctly and seem to approach it like a dance routine. It is a tool to understand a technique in a systematic way, and I believe that paired kata followed by simulated resistance practice followed by sparring is a good way to learn.

if you reject the IP method for motor learning (which I do) then there's no place for kata, it doesn't do anything towards attuning affordances
it may even be a hinderance as it'll develop strong attractor states not relevant to the environment

>Throws from clinch are kinda good but it's just shitty greco/judo.
Muay style clinching may not seem that useful in general because they need to maintain an upright posture because of the scoring rules, but there's still a lot of control involved. A wrestleling/judo/bjj guy with lots of stand-up experince won't be able to escape a muay clinch specialist, because he'll have broken ribs and a sliced up face within 5 seconds. Wrestlers/judo/bjj guys don't train to defend against elbows and knees in standup grappling. But it's one of those situations where if that advantage isn't capitalised immediately then it's over for the muay clincher.

>Kicks are useless against someone who knows how to block
Even if someone knows how to block, it still hurts. A hard kick to an arm block can break the arm.

>Knees are just useless
Only takes a single clean knee to the body in a clinch and the other person is down for the count.

>Elbows are kinda ok sometimes
Elbows are peak for close range striking

Kata are just little scenarios that showcase ideas. Kata is for understanding the concepts therein, demonstrating you understand the concepts therein, and then being able to teach the concepts therein. But it is not the same as performing or practicing the techniques in them, so muscle memory or whatever doesn't even really factor in. It's just a systematized method of learning, and I'm not claiming it's the best or most efficient way, but it works and has been for a long time. The traditional aspects of certain schools is part of the draw for some, so it's just a preference thing in the end. The only people I will question are those who never do opposed training or don't allow competition.

If you want to punch and kick the air then be my guest, but this isn't something that should be done during class time
That's a solo activity you can do as much as you want by yourself, but when you have living breathing human training partners in the room with you you're squandering that time if you do solo activities
Class time should be spent doing live work you can't do otherwise

Wrong, kata is as a sifu once said on a karate by jesse:
> 1#: Large circle is the cultivation or the greater understanding of the body mechanics when you do it in a flashy way.
> #2: The smaller circle which large circle is condensed into is more of the fighting techniques being sparred where you do a study on the form as in you speed up and tighten up the moves, forget flashy.
> #3: To a small point: You boil it down to rapid movement patterns that are useful and actual combat techniques, that's the whole point of "cultivating" techniques through Kata.
If I may add:
> Getting comfortable with technique because technique is not natural to human violence throwing big hooks and tackling someone on and dragging them to the ground and then smashing their heads against the ground either with fists or bashing their head in are natural ways for humans to fight each other when enraged, not technique found in martial arts, even biting is more natural.

the main critique I heard about kudo is that the helmet makes you feel immortal
so, 2 things:
1) you become retarded and reckless, which if you get used to that, is suicide in street fighting
2) head trauma risk is maybe even worse than boxing because the helmet gives you illusion of safety, so you don't protect the head as you would without the helmet, you go all in all the time
