/fat/ - Fat Loss General
>Who is /fat/ for?
For the eager eaters working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

Is it okay to eat a grilled cheese sandwich? 120 calories for the bread and 220 for the cheese, seems pretty decent for a lunch or a dinner. also i made scrambled eggs and bacon earlier and it was like 580 calories for 6 eggs and 4 slices of bacon, this is wild

This week was pretty good, I'm 94% sure I ate under my TDEE at the very least all days, most days I ate under my goal. I slipped up a couple of times, had Pizza Hut at one point and food from a Mexican grill but I noted both in MFP and I don't believe I overdid it either time. Today was good too because I don't seem to have any cravings right now and I'm still <1000 calories. Might have oatmeal or something for dinner though.

I'll re-enter the fatty contest again tomorrow morning no matter what the scale says. It's good to be back /fat/

Anonymous No.76375013 [Report]
This week I've paused eating for like 48 hours straight; my body felt amazing compared to how bloated it was feeling all the time, especially, it was amazing while sleeping.

1. But, the thing is, it also felt like my body was yearning for that usual chaos and suffering, chaos of stuffing myself with food and all the shitty feelings that come afterwards. This may sound bs, but it's a real feeling. It's like I get anxious when I do the right thing, being decent, being on the right track gives me anxiety, I'm almost afraid of losing weight, my mind wants the suffering and chaos of being obese.

2. And I've discouraged myself saying "I can't continue doing this on a daily basis ANYWAY.", because it's true, I've tried losing weight so many times and all failed. I know what's gonna happen again, so, I don't even want to try knowing it won't last more than a couple of days.

nope it seems that way but a lot of people here are fat for a reason, if they don't make major dietary habit changes they will relapse, hell even people who do makes these changes end up relapsing unfortunately so the ones just crash dieting have got no hope
Anonymous No.76375070 [Report]

I don't see how you learn less about diet changes when you go faster.

If anything going slow means you can compensate more with portion control when the main issue is usually the type of food you consume.

Yah I’ve always thought this was stupid advice. So I think the idea is that if you only weigh in once per week, you’re more likely to have a monotonic decreasing curve, whereas if you weigh in every day, it will bounce around a bit, but you can still see progress. Here are my questions though: (1) are people really that freaked out if their weight bounces around? (2) if my water weight fluctuates a lot, and my mean absolute deviation over the course of the week is greater than my weight loss, can’t I still bounce around measuring weekly (trick question, you can, I’ve tried). So what’s the point?

Some people thrive seeing the scale tell them stories when their weight goes up and down. Some people lose their shit and give up.
If you can see the scale jump up 4 pounds and not be okay with that then you should be weighing yourself daily so you can adjust habits.

Yes. Discouragement is one of the main things you are fighting trying to change your lifestyle and escape being fat. When you do the right things and see weight go up its pretty discouraging.

Personally I weighing every day is psychologically taxing but more than that, I find myself "cheating" and doing shit like specifically to sweat off water weight when I fuck up my eating because I dont want to see number go up. Even if its just manipulating the scale. It can get very bad

While I prefer thighs too, breasts aren't bad if you don't overcook them. And yeah if the breast is dry you've overcooked it, which is really easy to do.

Breasts have much better macros so I tend to go for them lately, when I had more calories to spend I was on thighs, but had to move over to breasts as I got closer to my goal weight.

There's no physical mechanism where this happens, depending on the individual you might do better this way, but it's all mental. Personally, I find the opposite is true. Once I get going it's easier to keep the momentum, if I'm full of food and bloated with water and know I'm not gonna see any progress on the scale I'm way more likely to say fuck it.

Visited family over the weekend and as a result I didn't lose any more weight over 3 days, but I still feel like I did okay. We went out to eat together twice and I managed to participate without having to do some diet autism, the only thing I fucked up was the drinks, it felt shit to order a water when it cost the same as anything else non alcoholic, so I got a homemade ice tea instead and it was disgustingly sweet, they must have added a ton of sugar (plus I think I'm not as used to sweet drinks at this point). A lot of sugar and it didn't even taste great (because too sweet) plus regret over the macros, I should have just gotten the water or something.
I'm hoping (coping) that I'll lose a bit more the next few days since I'm usually doing low carb, so maybe all the carbs from the rice and sugar mean I've gained some water weight, because in pure kcals it should still have been below maintenance, but maybe I just fucked up counting since ordered dishes are always hard to ballpark. Anyways family time was nice and I didn't gain weight at least, wagmi anons.

Hey guys, can you please share your body fat and muscle percentage that you get from a smart scale?
Because the one I have consistently gives me 30+% fat and 25% muscle. I'm concerned because that's something like a morbidly obese 120kg man would get but I'm only 80kg. ChatGPT said very elderly men will have less than 31% muscle and that's like the diagnosis for sarcopenia.
I also gained around 2kg of pure fat from 1 week going to the gym, that would be over 2000 excess calories a day, I barely eat that much in total.
Is my scale wrong (and how to fix it) or is ChatGPT wrong and these numbers are normal or is my body completely fucked?
Anonymous No.76375967 [Report] >>76376075
Sorry for the following blogpost.
I went from 165kg in mid october last year to 136kg by mid Jan. The doctor I saw was happy with all the blood tests showing normal liver ALT's (the reason I had a wake up call to stop being so fucking fat) but told me to lose the rest gradually because I had done well over the 10% body weight rapid loss they want to see to improve a chronic situation in the short term.

So for the last 6 months I have been doing between 1500-1800 calories, tracking everything even cooking spray oil on one of those little spice scales, aiming for 150g protein and letting the rest fall as it may in terms of macro balance while avoiding sugar/high levels of saturated fat.
Only today am I finally cracking 120kg, thats pretty much 6 months for another 16kg of weight loss, walking 10k~12k steps a day and doing a simple dumbbell workout 2-3 times a week.

Pretty sure my tdee estimation on my tracker is completely fucked too, I kept it at sedentary and never include any of the exercise I do and it still tells me I should have a TDEE of around 2700 which should be a 1200 deficit (not counting the extra exercise) but the weight loss simply doesn't reflect that.
My cope is some muscle recomp or water retention covering up more fat loss but I am starting to think the 30kg of fat lost by fasting at the start (and on a previous weight loss attempt I bought into the low carb/fasting meme for far too long) has done a number on my metabolism and my tdee is actually in the 1800-2000 range.
Not really sure how to fix it, considering going to the gym to start actually lifting seriously but I am not sure how effective that will be when eating in an aggressive deficit.
Anonymous No.76375981 [Report] >>76379656

Just keep an eye on it, and if you are not losing weight at the rate you expect, then it is likely that you are overestimating your TDEE.

> Only today am I finally cracking 120kg, thats pretty much 6 months for another 16kg of weight loss, walking 10k~12k steps a day and doing a simple dumbbell workout 2-3 times a week.
yeah thats weird. I think maybe you overdid it with the walking and weight training. get a blood test and check your t3, t4 and TSH, if you are tsh is above 2, definitely if it is above 3 you are going to have a hard time losing weight, not impossible.

> Not really sure how to fix it, considering going to the gym to start actually lifting seriously but I am not sure how effective that will be when eating in an aggressive deficit.
the fix is to do reverse dieting. basically you eat 100 calories more each day, and increase it by 100 every week. when you start gaining weight you increase it by 50 cals.

hows your sleep btw? and are you losing hair or anything?

Motivated by pure panic at high ALT's I just made up a electrolyte drink with salts and fasted for days at a time, when I wasn't fasting I was eating 800 calories of mostly protein then going back to fasting. On reflection it was probably an overreaction but it did drop all those markers down to the high end of normal quickly so I'm torn.
>Check your TSH
It was very high at the start of my weight loss, 10.8. They thought I was hypothyroid like my dad. Did loads of tests. Just like the liver markers though it had gone down after the intial 30kg loss, to 2.8 when they last checked and they discharged me from the thyroid clinic to have checks every 6 months to see if I end up going hypothyroid or not, other thyroid levels are normal.
>How's your sleep?
Much better since I started walking and lifting, I get up at 8am every day usually asleep by midnight or shortly after, no hair loss.

Good call on the reverse dieting, I may have to do something like that even though I am reluctant to slow the weight loss down for any period of time.

Get a heart rate tracker, the chest stap kind are the most accurate, wear it while you work, calculate your TDEE as sedentary then add what the tracker says you burned.

Some tracker tend to overestimate what you burn, especially smart watches, so you might need to cut what it claims you lost in half. Either way its more accurate than the the activity adjustments on TDEE calculators and it'll adjust for days you're less active without realizing.

It's not a motivation issue. I'm more pumped up about working out than ever now that I have a new goal and method. It's just caution since the pain was THAT bad. The only thing I've done is run, so I guess I was overdue for leg muscle exercise.
>if it's soreness then you should warmup and it will usually go away
if it's sharp pain then something is wrong
Yeah, I'm due to workout today. I'll see if my upper thighs feel okay after I jog a few miles. After that I'll try squats again. I figure the more I do it, the less it will hurt in time.
As for the pain, it's just the typical soreness type of pain. But it was so bad that it even woke me up in the second day after my workout. I guess it's because I went from 0 squats to around 50 in one exercise.

I have been interested in rucking because the idea of progressive overload + walking is pretty damn sexy.

But I also have observed the way being a fat ass can make a person go knock-knee and I feel like I have small twinge of knock knee from being fat and it stands to reason that progressively carrying even more weight would exacerbate the problem.

Have you considered this or have any thoughts on it?

Today's dinner: Sway/basa filet on lentils with fungi.

Not a very visually appealing dish, but dirt cheap (other than the fungi) and pretty good macros.
Per portion:
35 g fungi, 100g lentils, 5 g olive oil, 100g sway, some lemon juice, powdered chicken broth and a few capers.
~268 kcals (didn't log the capers and lemon juice)
27g protein
21g carbs
7g fat

I've had two portions, but it's very filling.
lentils: 0.43€
sway: 0.84€
olive oil: 0.04€
fungi: 0.72€
-----
2.03€, with the capers and broth powder it comes out to less than 2.50€/portion. Would recommend. Skip the fungi or get cheaper ones and you can make it for 1.50€/portion.

I do run... a little, at least I try to. I'm working on it. I don't have much stamina built up and still quickly get winded when I do. As soon as I start running I almost immediately spike to zone 3/4 and lose my breath so I do this sort of run to get my heart rate up / walk to catch my breath thing, and I try to do more running and less walking to progress. You can see when I run on the HR chart as the spikes (top of the middle pic >>76376991 ). I never did any running previously, I've been a sedentary fatass shut-in for the last two decades of my life so this is still pretty new to me. This time last year I hadn't even left the house in over a decade, so I've made a lot of progress from where I started.

>self.weigh()
>scale goes consistently down
>it's now at 92, was as 118
okay
that's been 26 kilograms or 57 pounds across a year and a quarter, no loose skin, no effort (i will explain), not even reading the stupid OP, not even counting anything, no bullshit broscience
I started when I've had enough
I will stop when I have enough (85 kg goal weight)
I had accepted myself as permanently obese and first started condensing my meals into a timeframe, some call it intermittent fasting, I call it "eat only from 11:00 to 16:00 or around that time"
That dropped me a bunch
Then I started cycling more, at night, so I don't interact with people. That further dropped fat
Then I started calisthenics workouts at night time, very simple at first, didn't tell anyone, but I was consistent
At this point, and only at this point, after months of training, did I start paying attention to what I was eating only because I hit the bottleneck
Over time I've refined my workouts, introduced new ones, soon it's time for creatine
I've NEVER restricted myself on what I eat or sacrificed myself of got into a struggle or anything like that
I even gained some weight back, I hovered from 100 to 103 kgs for a few months.
The thing is very simple, do you love and respect your body? Do you love and respect yourself? If so, then you will make sure you do loving things for it given time.
If you have a craving for something bad, then go for it, do not feel bad. The junk will do its damage and you will mitigate it afterwards - why further the negative feelings for no reason? Especially if you are on path to becoming a healthy person anyways.
I've passed this point of cravings. The habit is long baked in by now. I crave physical activity and healthy food and healthy life.
Guys, it's not a competition. Not even a competition with yourselves. When you've had enough, you'll let yourselves know.

CICO is a good model, and if you follow it you get results, but don't kid yourself it's not thermodynamics and the human body is much more complicated than that.

Calories of food is measured as the energy that could be produced by fully combusting the food. They literally put the food in a test tube with liquid oxygen, burn it, and see how much heat energy was generated.

Because your digestion does not map 1 to 1 with a test tube with liquid oxygen, the measured "calories" of a food does not map 1 to 1 to energy absorbed by your body. We can easily prove there is combustible energy still in the food after you digest it because pajeets literally burn shit. Exact energy absorbed from the food and ultimately fat gained/lost will still depend on your specific digestion and metabolism.

What does this mean practically? You should still more or less follow CICO, but I do believe you would see a difference if you double blind fed people the same calories but of different foods. Particularly fibrous fruits and vegetables vs sugar and white flour stuff.

Not completely, but I'm probably closer to it than most.
I read his "the power of now" book, and while it had some decent advice I wasn't super impressed overall.
>I "let the anger pass through me and remain present and focus on the sensations of the now"... nah im still pissed off and ruminating.
Awareness exercises help me a lot to remain in the moment, and so does meditation (note that meditation does not have to mean sitting on a bamboo mat and crossing your legs, there's many ways to meditate, some involving exercise). Also stuff I learned in therapy applies not only to my own brain but also other people's brains and I find that if I understand why someone does something bad I usually feel less bad about it.
Sadly I can't give you much more advice beyond that because I never really learned to turn my emotions off, instead I've had to learn the opposite. I've always felt like my emotions were a bit muted compared to others since I was a kid and then eventually I got a major depressive disorder (including de-realization and de-personalization) and as part of a protective instinct of that I "lost" them completely. I've since overcome that and as part of therapy regained the emotions, but the ability to de-realize and depersonalize isn't really one I've lost, so I can just go back to that state (though it's not a particularly pleasant state of being), so when I feel anger or sadness I can just "decide to stop feeling it". But since I've never learned the ability myself consciously, I sadly can't give you advice on how to learn it yourself.

Fair, I didn't know they started measuring it differently than the whole burning bullshit.

But still, the current calorie count seems to be a much improved approximation, but it is still an imperfect approximation. The people who went and improved it necessarily had to acknowledge that it isn't straight "law of thermodynamics" in order to start adjusting the "calories" figure to begin with.

Well, the expected weight loss is based on an estimated TDEE, the formula for which was probably determined through practical trial and error. So not necessarily.

But anyone who takes what I'm saying and goes and eats a bunch of twinkies and complains that they're still fat doesn't really matter. I know they say "law of thermodynamics" to pound into the heads of fatties that they can't smother a sandwich in unaccounted mayo and still lose weight, but I don't really give a shit if retarded fatties stay fat and retarded. I'm gonna be accurate about shit.

Yes, I'm on the train. But there is a difference between "this model has consistently worked, we should continue using it" and "this model represents the underlying machinations of the universe designed by God himself".

Similarly, we use Newtons laws to build a bridge, and indeed they work and they are a good model. Newtons laws break with general relativity though. And general relativity still will probably break once we see some more cracked shit, maybe quantum stuff, even though it works today to account for the different in time experienced by a GPS satellite going fast enough around the earth that it matters. They are good models that indeed fit the backtest of the phenomena that were observed when they were invented. But they are not the underlying code of the existence we find ourselves in.

Please, I beg of you, some humility, or a course on philosophy of science, and then another course on social skills.
The way you describe these things betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of what a law of science is, the scientific process and how you process information.
If you middle school teacher tells you the earth is a ball, but it's actually not quite, are they lying? Or is it just a useful approximation relative to the model applied to our reality?

Okay anon let me break it down for you in a way that may make more sense.
>and saying CICO is so absolute that it is a niggering tautology to the law of thermodynamics, which is an actual thing.
CICO technically means "calories in calories out" but by "in" it means "calories inserted into the system of the body", which already means after digestion and all that stuff. It doesn't mean "literally the amount of calories inserted into the mouth". If it did, we could chew some uranium and get fat.
So CICO is just a shorthand way for people to say that "In general if you expand more calories than your body receives it will store the excess energy in the form of fat and some muscle".
This is where the complaint lies. You're arguing a technicality, which is that technically the calories inserted into your mouth don't 100% get converted, but noone but you uses that definition, hence the strong reaction by different anons. With your definition you're 100% in the right, but again, that's private language, others don't use that definition, and anyhow it's probably less of an effect than the fact that nutritional labels can be up to 20% inaccurate or some shit like that. In the grand scheme it doesn't matter. All that CICO is there is to tell newbies that if they want to lose weight they have to eat less or move more.
Hence also the philosophy of science argument, newtons law aren't wrong, they just have a scope in which they can be applied. For domains outside of that scope, they break down, but that doesn't make them wrong. Few laws in science are actually unmovable as far as we know, they always apply within given scopes and basically act as useful approximations within them.

I know cheat days aren't really good, but it works for me. It's just nice to be able to go out every once in a while and have a beer and a "normal" meal at a restaurant, and not be that guy who just orders a chicken salad every time.

I know I was eating more to try to put on some muscle while losing the last 10 pounds but fucking my back and coping that my hips will get better has just lead to me getting up to 190. Need to just fast I guess and give up on being muscular until I can figure out why my hips are fucked up. Any fatties trying to start working out learn from my mistake and keep it low and build up even if you think you can do more. I was dumb and started with 60 situps a day to try to improve core.
