>Who is /fat/ for?
For the sledding slobs working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

every OP image is an opportunity to share a useful or inspiring picture to help people achieve their goal of losing weight. the nun duck images are both off-topic and useless in this regard. the worst, though, is that the images discourage new people from taking the thread seriously and joining in on the discussion.

this is the problem when someone occupies a leadership position for ulterior motives. they don't actually have the same goals as the people they are leading. they intentionally lead them astray and waste their time and resources. it's sabotage.

personally, i don't mind the comic but it obviously doesn't belong here and it's strange that moderation is complicit with it.

Do the red light or the "total body" as they call it. Will help with the stretch marks. Make sure you are explicitly clear you don't want tanning.

I've only been running outside, anon. Sun on my body has undoubtfully also been fantastic.
But It's fucking insane how much speed and mobility I've gotten. Just now I was walking from the store and a large group was about to cut off a narrow sidestep, which would've force me to walk in their slower tempo. I fucking despise this, but instead of picking up my phone and pretending I'm doing something to create some distence between us I did a sudden little jog to get ahead of them. It's the little things like this that are most noticible because holy shit I accelerated fast.

Protien powder should be a last resort, you should get the majority of your protien from real food. Lean meats, dairy, eggs, ect. Protein shakes are for when you're behind your protien goals for the day and you dont have time/calories for the day for anything else.

take the right protein shake. Don't listen the anti-shake retards. If you are trying to get your protein maxed either you eat 10 eggs a day or fail.

If your total shake calaries (power, fruit, milk, whatever) is more than 130 calories you are doing it wrong.

Set a timer today for my walking/running, to push myself, set it to 1 minute running / 2 minutes walking, then I set that to a loop, it really kicked my ass. First couple runs were easy enough, but it quickly caught up to me, I even took a break half way but still felt drained, by the end I was only managing a few shuffling steps for the running sections before being completely winded. Just goes to show how much I've been leaving in the tank previously by winging it and running whenever I felt like it. My feet are killing me right now, but overall it feels good, like I made progress.

The biggest awakening you can have as an adult is that you're actually free to do whatever.
You can go to your job tomorrow naked, writing "ron paul 2027" in permanent marker between your nipples and shit on the office floor.
You can get a 6 pack of beer and gift it to random strangers to make their day better.
You truly are in control of your destiny. In the same way that you had an awakening and woke up from the zombie mode of eating shit without considering it, you can have a similar awakening where you change your life such that you enjoy it more. Make social contacts. Do weird shit. Go on vacation in strange places. Find hobbies and interests, and people to share them with.
It sounds obvious, but this simple truth is immensely powerful to realize and few people ever truly do.

In practical terms?
Calculate https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metabolic_equivalent_of_task but use lean body mass rather than actual weight or multiply by 0.6 at the end.
Wattage is also a fairly useful proxy.
If you want a scientifically accurate measurement, then you need a thermally isolated chamber and measure waste heat. A slightly less accurate but far more realistic method is via oxygen consumption.

what if all the fitness apps are designed to over estimate everything, so you stay fat and keep using them, that way they can keep pushing you ads or try to bait you into buying premium.

someone should make an app that brutally underestimate and takes the absolute most pessimistic and conservative approach to every input you give it.

Hey gang. I never go on /fit/ but I saw this on the front page so fuck it why not.

Since last October I've lost 32kg by doing nothing except eating less. I cut out sodas entirely, energy drinks once every blue moon at the most now. I still eat sweets and the like otherwise, I just eat far, far less of it. To the point where my stomach grumbles every day, more often than not and you know what? I feel great. I feel just swell. I love the weightloss and I love how much easier it was than I expected. "Just eat less" really works.

You get a garbage bag, and a CO2 meter and measure how much CO2 exhale while you're exercising by exhaling into the bag. That's essentially how a lab will measure your calories burned and its the most accurate way to do it.

Probably, but it'll likely not be worth it. Honestly the exact caloric expenditure shouldn't matter, because you should be in a deficit either way.
It's a bit like how the best way to calculate TDEE is over a period of a month or more.
The usual advice for actual fatties (things might change when you get down there in bf%) is to just eat a slight deficit assuming no exercise and seeing any exercise as a bonus.

MET is a very imperfect metric, but it's easy to calculate, which is why it's the thing that most fitness trackers and apps use. It's almost always overshooting the actual expenditures (also keep in mind that it includes base metabolism, so you have to subtract that to get actual expenditure).
The best realistic measurement is if you have a high quality exercise equipment that measures wattage and uses that as a proxy.
My advice: Don't worry about it too much. Eat a slight deficit, do exercise as often as you can without running into issues and consider any number your fitness tracker tells you either a flat out lie or a upper bound that is probably a decent bit too high.

Ah fair enough, if it's just out of curiosity then don't mind the advice.
>exercise equipment measuring wattage is a good idea but it doesn't capture collateral expenditure, right? and the body is not as efficient as an electric motor
Generally speaking, correct. That being said the correlation between wattage and actual expenditure is (I'm making assumptions here) probably fairly decent. If you look at something like the concept 2 (the rowing machines most fitness studios have), they use that wattage measurement to guesstimate the caloric expenditure (though I'm unfamiliar with the exact process) and I'd guess it's much closer than MET.

If you want a read on some useful proxies for actual expenditure that are actually used, have this ressource: https://pacompendium.com/adult-compendium/

24 chicken poppers, 14" pizza (vegetarian because I wanted be healthy); 1 double quarter pounder; paneer Balti with plus rice, 1 family sized naan; chips; 2 packs of TUC cheese biscuits and a 2l bottle of pepsi max.

Oh and I've got some fruit for dessert because my GF ate the chocolate cake I was saving.

I uploaded a photo of myself the ChatGPT and asked it to guess my weight and it guessed 210. Still going to start cutting but I can run a 10k without issues even in this ungodly heat. In the future I'd suggest something with less sugar, berries make me get the munchies quickly again.
I like canned mackerel, which I enjoy for major cravings. 180 kcals, 15g protein, comes with tasty tomato sauce, shelf stable. These are german, but I'm sure (you)r store has them too. Deenz if you want to have even better macros. Also most canned soups like lentil soup are around 200 kcals it seems, also solid choices.
If you just need a snack, picrel, kohlrabi are beyond based. They are super crunchy (more than even apples), have a nice raw taste and are cheap (depending where you live). Worth picking up when you see some at the store. 100g are like 28 kcals or some shit like that.

That being said, if the berries worked, good job.

I know that this is a retarded rant, but why are calories so dumb?

>the heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 ยฐC

Why is it so arbitrary? Why did we choose an unit that's related to raising the temperature of water to use in food?

Like say you look at a chocolate bar, and it's 900 calories. WTF does that even mean?

Apparently for some god forsaken reason someone decided that you need to be around ~7716.18 calories in total deficit to lose 1kg, if you invert it, 1 kcal ~= 0.000129598kg ~= 0.129598g. So why not measure things in grams? For example, hey, that 900 calorie chocolate bar, if you eat it you gain 116.64grams (if you're at TDEE, but if you're at deficit, it's the same shit, except you'll prevent 116.64 grams of weight loss instead of gaining it). If I knew it was that retardedly high I would never have eaten it.

I will be converting everything to grams in my head now(divide by 8, it's 12.5 instead of 12.96, accurate enough, if you need to make it even more accurate you can add 4% to that result which is also easy to do in your head).

Interesting. I wonder if this would help obesity when it's so clear cut that even a toddler would understand. Although the accuracy would be off because not everyone digests food similarly.

My personal weight loss strategy is just to match my hunger with whatever tolerance for hunger i'm feeling that day. Normally I average about 600 calories a day no problem because when I get too hungry I eat an apple and move on. Some days i'll end up fasting and some days i'll eat at TDEE, it just depends on whats happened that day.
Its essential to have a list of the most satiating foods known to mankind and to rotate through them as you get bored and to strictly eat those things. It makes counting trivial too. Ya'll like to make this shit so difficult for no reason.
Also the ducks and nuns are nice and all but it has been the same thing for over a decade.

This is my problem, I didn't get fat eating slop like most people, I got fat by just eating too damn much of the "good" stuff. Doesn't matter what I eat, if I eat until I'm satisfied im going to overeat. I cant just cut out the soda and sweets and solve my obesity becuase they've never been part of my diet to begin with. I'm hungry all the time, eating never makes me feel full, I always want another heaping helping after I eat, but just eating less is the only thing that works. Portion control works. I'm still hungry but thats just something I have to live with and get used to.

I never found any of the high satiety food or volume eating to help at all, its can pack away enough lean meats and green veggies for a week and still feel hungry. I have to just eat enough to hit my calorie target and accept I'll still be hungry when I finish eating. Distracting myself helps, if im bored I'm thinking about food, so going for a walk or doing some accessory exercises at the gym works. I'm usually not thinking about food when im active.

It's not arbitrary, calorimetry predates fat science and is more useful. Calorimetry measures how much useful work i.e. heat content i.e calories we an get out of something. It was here first and so it was used first, although food companies definitely prefer calories because everybody at the top of this world is scum.
Humanity has always wanted to know how much work we could get out of something because it's dangerous to be wrong about this sort of thing. Knowing how much work we can get out of our food is more useful than how much our food would weigh us down if we ate it.
Knowing that i just ate 1200 calories and will be good to work for the next 8 hours is more useful than knowing that i would have in theory gained .34 lbs for that meal.
Also historically, fat people virtually didn't exist and measuring food by weight gain is something that would exist solely for us. It's only been around 40 years give or take since the fatty epidemic started.
I do think you're onto something though, both would be extremely useful to have on our food, it's just calories are the more useful measure. Very interesting idea.

Have you guys noticed a significant reduction in blood pressure from weight loss? Mine dropped a lot when I started regularly doing cardio. But aside from that, it's been frustratingly stable no matter how much weight I lose
I've got it down to like 110/70 in the morning, but it still gets up to like 125/80 when I measure in the evening. I'm not too worried about it yet but I'd still like to improve it while I'm young (literally every adult on my dad's side of the family had to start taking BP meds in their 40s or 50s)

Because the energy contained within food was initially measured by burning it, it is by all measures the absolute upper limit of how much energy your body could hope to gain from metabolising something
The decision (and the calorie as a unit of measurement as a whole) also predates fat people existing, aside from a handful of nobles and rulers

unironically yes
you have nothing to shit out.
Also make sure you're getting both insoluble and soluble.
Insoluble adds bulk and fulfils minimum shipping requirements
Soluble packages it all together into a nice log.

weigh in day today. Another week, another 1 lbs down. I'm eating at a 500-calorie deficit and it's actually been really close to the estimate I get from the losertown calculator from the OP.
this pace is agonizingly slow, like I won't hit my goal weight until late December assuming the losertown estimate stays accurate. But this deficit is really sustainable for me, especially with intermittent fasting. I'm at the point where it barely even feels like dieting anymore, this is just my life now

Another anon in one of these threads said something along the lines of itโ€™s normal and healthy to be hungry. Itโ€™s our body driving us to go out and hunt or whatever, but itโ€™s not normal for us to constantly shut down the hunger or instantly suppress it with food. He phrased it a lot better, but I think he had a point.

When i tapered cigs i gained 2.5kg in 2 days even though i definitely didnt eat that much to warrant that kind of gain. So i spent last 3 weeks losing that weight and while i did lose most of it that puts me at the same weight as a month before which sucks

Social occasions really are the hardest for me. A BBQ where everyone constantly pushes food into your hands, eating a lot is encouraged, alcohol lowers your inhibitions..
When I'm on my own and can be as autistic as I want, no problem to stick to a solid deficit. But functioning with other people really makes it so much harder.

My body is telling me
>NOHO! NOO! , Y-YOU CAN'T, NO, STOP NO!

but my mind is telling me that I was offered special privileges and exemptions on the grounds of my fraility growing up, so I internalized that frailty = worth, specialness, affection.

My body might argue that being weak and sickly is not the flex I think it is, and point to my being a 35 year old man who had to move back in with my mom as my ED ruined my life as evidence. It might argue that I was objectively happier in 2017-2020 when I was 53 kg with bitch tits - and my own place where I pursued hobbies and interests not related to diet and exercise

But alas, my letting go in late November was too dysphoric and I ended up feeling embarrassed by my 50.65 kg body (of which 2kg was carb bloat) Every one of those spikes represents me going *nom nom nom* elbow deep in a bag of chips at 9 PM while watching mindless YouTube. That ain't who I am! I am a disciplined anorectic who not only knows the difference between the noun anorectic and the verb anorexic, but who makes the right choices as I grab my organic celery and my high polyphenol EVOO and feel superior to the cattle in the checkout queue paying for chips and frozen pizzas like retards with no impulse control.

Yep... Once I reach my UGW. I might finally feel sick enough and pat myself on the back and say "we did it" and bask in the glory of victory for a week before going back to my Set Point Weightโ„ข

Itโ€™s truly incredible how I can go from a complete coach potato junk food binge eater to a cardio bunny healthy food connoisseur and the scale doesnโ€™t even move at all. I thought at my size and previous lifestyle that starting to exercise and quitting junk would translate to improvement but Iโ€™ve lost almost nothing after a month. Iโ€™m going to have to actually starve myself if I want to quit weightโ€ฆ

After many years of disordered eating what finally helped me lose weight and establish good habits was getting over childhood trauma, ahdd meds and semaglutide.
At my goal weight now and the main factor was getting on wegovy, however adderall helped me divorce enjoyment from decision making which is what finally helped quit junk food and soda.
On wegovy it became much more clear I had problematic behavior from a young age that didn't dissipate well into my 20s. I had many failed weight loss attempts before this. Binge eating disorder was just one manifestation of genetic ADHD with most of my male family members having been in and out of prison or failing as parents due to their ADHD.
Thought I'd write this post in case it helps anyone, 120 lbs down from my highest weight and my BMI is 23 now. Have to get jacked to cover up loose skin now but it's not the worst problem.

I'd like to add the other people I've known with binge eating disorder also had ADHD or similar mental issues that made it very difficult for them to lose weight in a sustainable manner.
>>76400730
As I said above I think binge eating disorder is a mental healthcare issue more than one related to diet. I'd look into that. That being said a lot of psychiatric medication isn't as safe or well studied as the stimulant medication used for ADHD so this is at your own peril.

It never works. People have to start properly thinking about how willpower works. Itโ€™s like a video game where you only have a set amount of willpower. But hunger is like an exponential function. You can reach a point of hunger where you will cannibalize other people and shit. So the math does not work out. Losing weight is about finding the greatest leverage on your willpower.

People with mental disorders find it necessary to perform extended fasts because moderation is so difficult, at their long term expense.
If you want to elicit positive behavior you should always seek to create an environment, mindset, and physical state conducive to it. That can involve swapping jobs, moving, addressing childhood trauma, and medication for physical or mental ailments. Willpower is a spook and is better explained by concepts like variation if food drive, mental illness, so on. People need to accept they are the product of systemic outcomes and set themselves up for success. If your previous context lead to obesity, the context must significantly change, not your willpower.
You should never make a bet that a mentally ill obese American guy working 5 12 hour shifts a week with parents who buy junk food constantly would lose weight.

>fat fuck
>start lifting
>actually making gains, losing weight
>sike time for wrist tendinitis
>start walking more to at least keep active
>get a promotion at work that means I'm on my feet all shift
>eventually my feet start wanting to pack it in
>can barely walk by the end of a shift
>wrist is still being a shitter, just got to put up with it and lift I guess

Any suggestions on a pair of budget-ish shoes for walking and being on my feet all day at work? I walk about 250 miles a month just at work these days.

Have a look at what causes it in the first place, maybe you even have medical coverage for the solution already.
I learned that I can get a pair of orthopedic inserts twice a year for free, all I have to do is ask, that was massively better for my feet.
A solid middle ground are those sports "running" sneakers with the thick soles, they cushion the feet much better.
If you've just got acute pain, and need to lower the pain on your soles, picrel look like shit (thick eva foam slippers) but a sibling of mine who's a doctor and spends their entire day on their feet used them when they had strong foot pain and it helped them cure it. Plus those slippers are like 4โ‚ฌ on aliexpress
