>Who is /fat/ for?
For the dieting ducks working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

Weekly weigh-ins must be weird, if you eat salt and carbs throughout your day you'll weigh more the next day and if that's your weigh-in day it'll skew the whole data set you're inputing this in for the week.

A dude with a higher TDEE is still going to feel hunger if he's in a large deficit.

Just to use an example: A person with a 1900 TDEE eating 1400 cals will feel the same amount of shitty as a person with a 2900 TDEE eating 2400 cals, their TDEE itself exists only because that's the amount their body needs to sustain itself

No, not really. There's tons of downsides though. Namely being angry that you wasted your youth through an avoidable ailment

You should probably get therapy so it doesnt eat you alive.

>Life is suffering
>Self-discipline is required to live a successful life
>To be self-disciplined you have to value yourself and by extension your time
>In order to value your time you must accept responsibility for your life
>you got fat, even if its not your fault, and the burden is solely on you regardless
>all you can do is move forward, spending your life making decisions and not avoiding them
>rumination is death
>getting mad at yourself for stuff that has already happened is a waste of time
>dont fantasise about how much better others have it, because life is meant to be suffering

well yeah I mean if you value the lessons you definitely can learn that it's just useless suffering and to teach and feed your children to eat well. I guess for a lesson you could also learn from being fat that you will lose weight and never be fat again, learning how to diet, exercise and manage TDEE vs consumption in a maintenance diet. Whereas some may get fat later in life maybe it won't happen to you.

No, sometimes you really do suffer extensively for nothing.
Only thing you can do is double down on the things you want in life and pursue it with everything left.
Also that other anon is wrong, anger and hatred will carry you extremely far. It is a deep well of motivation, energy and focus that is meant to protect you and serves to remind you what happens when you are weak. Your own emotions are meant to help you and you should never let that feeling go, but do learn to switch out and control your emotions as needed.
The blame is on your parents and none of it is your fault, but you are the one with the responsibility to fix the problem. Such is life, now get angry faggot, you deserve better.

Not enough to make it a net positive.
That being said, I think being "lower" on the social hierarchy in your younger years can afford you the opportunity to build more empathy and a more unique personality, as you're somewhat more free of the social mold that others are put into.
If you actually take that opportunity to become empathetic and interesting, or if you just become a hate fueled weirdo and social recluse is chance then.

I don't feel any different at all, and I don't think I look any different. The only two pieces of evidence I have that anything is happening is 1) the number on the scale has down down by 8 kg, and 2) my clothes fit different now
I've heard about the paper towel effect, how the changes are so gradual that you won't notice until the last few kg before your goal weight. I'm hoping that's true, if I still have a beer gut at BMI 22 then I'm going to go burn down every McDonald's in the world

All the devices say my exersize routine is about 500 calories too, which I also dont know what to believe about, so all in all this information is telling me I'm running at like a 2000 calorie deficit which is way more extreme than I thought. That's potentially 4lbs a week

I wonder how much plateaus are actually something happening in our bodies, and how much are down to slipping up here and there with actual calorie intake after getting complacent. Well if you stick to the exact same intake long term your progress is bount to change since your maintainence goes down as lose weight, right?

So when you first start, 1500 cals intake is a huge deficit , but when you've lost a bunch of weight, it will be a much smaller deficit, so you will lose weight at a much slower rate

Unless you're a tiny sedentary <5'3" manlet with next to zero muscle mass 1500kcal daily intake will get you to a healthy weight eventually. Sure it'll slow as you get closer to your goal but not that much.

Plateauing at 220 on a 1500kcal limit is unlikely, and certainly not for two months straight. The only way it makes sense is if you're eating more than you think you are.

I have been dieting at 1500 calories for about 2 months. I have dropped from 250lbs to 238. I'm ok with this speed. But I joined the gym today and they give you the whole free coaching thing. The trainer tells me 1500 is way too low, the bare minimum and is not healthy. He recommends 2000 calories. Does he just want me to lose weight slower and get his services? Is he retarded? Or am I retarded? 33 yo 6'0

A gym trainer's credentials are very low, so I would take whatever they say with a grain of salt. With that said, 2000 calories is not a bad idea if you're doing more cardio, which is probably what he wants because it means you'll come back to the gym more often. It's not malicious advice. In the end, it depends on your goals.

I'll give my thoughts on this because I am in the same boat.

1. Start losing weight today. You should've started yesterday but the second best time is today. Right now. Bit by bit, you can pick up the intensity (lose weight faster that is) once you've been dieting for a while longer.

2. you still have plenty of time to enjoy your life. don't be retarded coombrain idiot and fall for hollywood narratives.

3. to make up for lost time you can no longer be a passive, lazy retard. you are going to have to take charge. want to go visit italy? do it. want to go try your hand at a certain career? do it. want to learn to play the piano? do it. want to talk to that girl at the gym? do it. you'll quickly realize that there isn't much to life after you knocked out the main goals on your bucket list.

4. stop ruminating about the past. this is text book clinical depression. go see a psychologist or therapist who is experienced in cognitive behavior therapy. there are DIY book on cognitive behavioral therapy that you can use to implement it on your self.

5. having be morbidly obese you know you what ill-health looks like, take care of your health. work out, sleep good, get sunlight, eat right, don't fall into poor health again if you can't help it.

but really point 3 is extremely salient here, you need to go into overdrive mode. start working away at your goals. put yourself out there. you can't afford to be a le doomer blackpilled incel.

I have a propane grill (best investment ever btw, buy one if you have the space) so I use that to cook all meat.
>Set it to as high as it can go
>spray some oil on the grill and the patty side without the paper
>Dump the frozen patty directly on the grill
>Take off the paper, season the frozen side with salt, pepper, garlic (optionally a bit of cumin)
>Wait until meat juices start piling up on the frozen side before turning (usually 3-4 minutes, that should give enough time for the bottom to char and get those grill marks)
>Flip it over, wait for the bottom to cook a bit
>Once it's done move it to the top of the grill, turn the heat off, put a slice of cheese on top, and close the grill - wait for the cheese to melt

Frying pan should be about the same, but you need to use a good amount of oil and press the burger down with a weight or spatula
The most important part is to wait for the grill / frying pan to get hot before spraying oil and putting the patty in

Hello /fit/, /v/fag here I'm on a diet to lose weight and maintain lean body mass.

I completely revamped my breakfast and I still want to maximize everything I've been reading.

I've been home making cottage cheese from skimmed milk and eating 3 poached eggs + 40g oat bran + 1 guava and lost ~6kg in 1 month.

I heard recently that cottage cheese is better eaten at night though, is that the same for eggs/poached eggs?

Should I swap poached eggs + cottage milk to be eaten at my dinner?

I saw an endocrinologist interview recently that for people who want to lose weight and keep lean body mass they should eat 1.4g - 2.0g of protein per kilogram of their weight otherwise they'll get flacid.

Also 30-40ml of water per kilogram of weight with the same goal of keeping lean body mass.

1 gram per pound lean is a conservative number. You can probably get away with .75. The important thing is to just lift hard and monitor your strength while cutting. If you get weaker then you need to eat more. I suspect that I could lower my protein even more drastically than that. But I’m not going to gamble too much with my gains

I'm really not though. Everything is calculated to the calorie.

Exercise is calculated on 3 calculators + 2 fitness trackers.

Weight is taken on 2 scales.

TDEE is calculated in 4 different ways, output is based on the highest.

There are shenanigans at play...

It never ends, no matter what anyone says.

Slop is designed from the ground up to appease your primitive money brain to the maximum possible levels. Humans genetically crave carbs and fats, which slop is made almost 100% of.

The body/brain still thinks we're primitive hunter gathers in an environment with limited food, it wants to store fat so we can survive harsh winters, famine, etc.

Slop is designed to be exactly what we crave to survive a harsh environment, the issue is we face no harsh environments so all that fat becomes a burden rather than a boon.

Yes, hydration level and food has a huge impact on scale. The difference between sweating your ass off at the gym then taking a piss, and drinking several large glasses of water and a large meal could swing you as much as 5lbs.

Why its best to pick a consistent time to whigh yourself and average the results over the week.

>2 eggs: $0.50
>bag of broccoli: $1.10

>1/4 pack of taco seasoning: $0.20

Last winter my gf kept throwing whole packs of them in my lunch and I would eat the whole fucking thing in one day, like three sleeves. I ate at the very least four boxes of oreos this way, on top of the other careless slop and liquor I consume during my peak work season. DYOR about this shit but "cholesterol being bad" is bullshit, every study out there has shown that 80% of patients which have actually had heart attacks have had "healthy" or "low" levels of LDL cholesterol
My doctor also told me to lower it and I've kept eating the same shit, I'm trying to get more fish in my diet (not because of cholesterol, DHA oil makes you smarter) but fatty fish is expensive.
Also dietary cholesterol has next to no effect on blood cholesterol. It's all saturated fat. If you want to lower your cholesterol, you need to eat less saturated fat.

Something also worth noting is that higher cholesterol is associated with higher testosterone. I probably won't get another test tomorrow but last month I was at 723 ng/dl total testosterone.

Yep, next biggest source is milk, and I had maybe a glass a week. I was eating chicken breast nearly everyday. The only oil I use is extra virgin olive oil but the amount of fats I got from that was negligible because I use a sprayer. It was literally less than 1g of the stuff, takes like 4 full sprays to equal 1g, I used 2 sprays (one spray per side of the chicken) so I counted it as 1g anyway, still doesn't come close to the chicken's fat contribution.

same with wrists
but for whatever reason most obese ppl have biggish calves/wrists and keep them after you lose weight
don't think that's the case with abs (as in you can "easily" target grow as oppose to wrists/calves )

Depends on your heartrate, even better if you know your VO2 max. Steps/time alone isn't a good way to figure out caloric burn unless we also know how heavy you are, your age, your heartrate and your VO2 max. If you were in Zone0 it'd be <500 calories, if you were in Zone1 ~1500, Zone 2 ~4000. It can vary pretty wildly depending on these factors.

Get a heartrate monitor if you're serious about it.

I'm going to be the lone voice of support here: I've also been having a protein drink and bar for lunch every day for like 3-4 months now (but not the potato chips) and it's been going pretty well. As long as your dinner isn't just another protein shake or something like that, you're probably fine.

Personally as much as I like chips, I'd rather spend those calories on another protein bar or something. They taste good but they're not very satiating.

Pretty much the same here. I have a fairly low TDEE so I started skipping breakfast and just having a protein bar/drink for lunch to cut calories. Yesterday I had that + a lean pork chop + pasta, then I realized I was still like 300kcal under my already low limit so I went back out and grabbed a couple chicken breasts to pack in some extra protein
Felt pretty good knowing I could've gone to bed with like 800 kcal and felt fine

I just wrapped up 3 weeks of extremely consistent diet. The weight I lost vs the calories I ate puts my tdee at around 2,650.

During this time my fitbit estimated my tdee to be 2,711.

speaking of smart watches, I started wearing one for the first time just to measure my steps, and noticed for the first time that I have a weirdly low heart rate. Like, when I'm just relaxing on the couch it's usually under 60 BMP. I know a low heart rate is something athletes get but I'm a fatso who doesn't even make it to 10k steps every day. Looked up fast but so not sure how accurate. My bmr should be around 2.7k-2.8k. I eat around 2k calories daily. To loose 1.6kg a week I would need 1760kcal deficit daily. Now not sure if my maths are mathing, but I feel like this was good progress :).

Watches use a tiny sensor that tries to pick up your heartrate optically, which can be interfered with by numerous factors like sudden movement, like swinging your arms when you walk, moisture, dirt on the sensor, ect can make it detect extra beats or miss beats. While straps pick up the electrical signals from your heart and are usually >95% accurate at actually detecting your heartrate during exercise. Then again if you're just walking around and not doing a lot of quick movements you don't need a strap if you already have a watch, or you've been eyeing a watch for other reasons its probably close enough to give you a general idea of your heartrate. Unless you're a serious and care about your zones training you don't need the accuracy of a strap.

Increased lifespan, almost all death by old age is heart complications.

The less strained your heart is at rest*most of the day) the less wear on its cells.

Also if you do HIIT, you can train your heart to better control its heart rate, increasing your chance of surviving a heart attack.

>incredibly vague symptoms, like "tiredness"
It means do you feel tired during your regular activity on a normal day. Its normal to feel tired a few minutes after you wake up, or after a strenuous workout, or when its around your bed time, its not normal to feel tired just doing regular day-to-day stuff once you've been up and active for an hour or so. If you feel tried throughout the day without anything prompting it like exercise or lack of sleep that could be a sign of a serious problem with your heart and you should talk to your doctor about it.

Same goes with fatigue, confusion, chest pains, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and memory problems, if you're getting any of that just randomly throughout the day without anything prompting it is likely a sign of serious problems and you shouldn't ignore it.

Look if you're getting fatigued just doing regular everyday stuff that's not normal, even for fats. If you go for a run or do some lifting, sure, its normal to feel fatigued after that, but if you feel fatigued after taking a shower, walking the dog, or peeling an orange you've probably got issues you need diagnosed.
