Like even if you are doing a weak as shit starting bench like 40kg, common fucking sense dictates you should actually be struggling towards the end of a set. I dunno man, I feel like 100g of protein should be enough to make good progress. Lifting isn't exactly rocket science so I can't imagine anyone screwing that up either. Oil heavy diets are shit, but it won't kill your gains. It just has to be shitty genes there is no other way

Racism aside, the reality of the situation is most natty lifters just don't actually know what it means to go to failure. Progressive overload can carry you far, but you will reach a point where you do not WANT to go and further mentally. Most in natties fall into this pit of no progress because they just dont understand what it takes and dont really want to know.

I made a lot more gains once I switched to machines and cables only, free weights suck for going to failure. Even with a spotter you can still smash your face in as seen many times on video.

When I'm using a barbell or dumbbells I always keep 2-3 reps in the tank cause I'm afraid I'll injure myself.

NTA but I can emphasize to an extent when it comes to a bench with no safety bars/available spotter. I am quite sure my bench progress has been aided by the fact I have a home gym in a power rack with thich steel safety bars. I've only fucked up on the bench once but I wouldn't be in a world of shit unlike if using a conventional commercial bench.

To add, this is a red flag. You're shooting for 8 reps every single set with 55kg? Stupid. Shoot for a general range like 6-8 every set and don't pussy out on your first set so you have enough strength left to hit 8 on set 2 and 3. Fucking lift 60kg on set 1 and barely squeeze out that last rep before lowering the weight

The problem was that my old gym (Planet Fitness) didn’t have a free weight bench, only a Smith machine. I could hit 70kg on that, but on a regular bench, I couldn’t even do 50kg. If you're keeping 55kg on every set and doing 8 reps on every set then obviously you can do more weight/reps on your first set. Pick a rep range like 6-8 and focus on squeezing out those reps on your first set, like you are struggling like all fuck towards the end of that first set. You have 1-0 reps in reserve. Then you lower the weight to one where you can do another 6-8 reps and also have 1-0 RIR. Like your bench should be some shit like 60-65kg for your first set, not 55kg
