Is sleep really all that necessary, or just a humiliation ritual? I could go to bed now but will probably stay up until 1am drinking and frogposting...I can still walk 3 hours tomorrow.

>I can still walk 3 hours tomorrow.
When you walk you are doing something you have done to death thousands of times before. I would be more worried if you couldn't walk when sleep deprived.

It's a humiliation ritual.

It’s just about the single most important factor or at minimum diet sleep and exercise are all tied being equally important. Without sleep you will burn out or down and crash or get injured or not develop as well as you would with proper sleep. You can make it on less but the more you get (within reason and on a good natural schedule) the better

Sleep is a free psychedelic trip every night that leaves you feeling better, why wouldn't you take all you can get?

the only way it was explained to me and the only way i understand it is basically just like with old PC disks you need to defragment your hard disk now and then just from using the PC. it’s why tweakers and coke heads freak out after binges. those drugs in of themselves aren’t that bad, it’s mainly the lack of sleep. same why long term “soft drug use” like alcohol and weed is bad for you, it ruins proper sleep where the repairs and cleaning are meant to happen. same reason why gamer nerds who are otherwise sober end up croaking at 24 after drinking 3 Monster cans during a weekend sesh. it’s way above my paygrade and the why we need sleep question is even further out. idk man, tl;dr:
>why do we need sleep?
>BECAUSE… BECAUSE YOU JUST DO!!

>most of the world’s life is centred around a 9-5 hour and 4-6 day work week
>no matter how “healthy” i get my:
>sleep schedule, even forcing myself during ‘off seasons’ to not stay up all night
>optimum diet as much as i can
>drug/alcohol/caffeine/nicotine use, or lack thereof
>and minor things like mattress quality and darkness at night
>CAN NOT simply wake up and feel good at anything earlier than 9AM
>CAN NOT get tired before 1AM most nights
it’s not snoring or airway obstruction either i’ve been told i’m a very quiet sleeper. i know people who are maybe older or work worse jobs or schedules and they seem to just be able to get up every day. i know clinically depressed people, drug addicts that with their problems still dont dread getting out of bed for work like i do sometimes. the fuck, /fit/

If you are a non-achieving neet then probably not.

>natural function
>humiliation ritual
The real humiliation ritual is being denied regular 9 hours of sleep nightly due to various "societal needs".

not gonna blogpost but ive been like this my whole life. when i stopped being a neet and got a job, i forced myself to turn everything off and have the blinds closed by 9:30pm so i could be up and fresh for 6:30am. my body just could not adjust to this schedule. i went so far as to try all nighters and then sleeping at a normal time to “reset” my schedule. nope, my body’s clock seems to like waking up 8-9am and shutting down at 12-2am. i even went off caffeine entirely and still nothing. i never really took meds for anything aside from paracetamol and other minor shit.

it’s just this visceral reaction to HAVING to het the fuck up NOW. every fucking morning. just starting the day is a chore. being jolted awake by a literal alarm, something we usually use to signal danger, is so unnatural. but how the fuck else am i meant to wake up on time for mr goldstein

I am basically the same. You should lift heavier and move more, you will be tired and you will fall asleep.

This. Think back to when you were a kid, and you weren't even tired, but your parents forced you to go to bed - while they got to stay up and have fun. Adults condition kids to think they need sleep, and thus psychologically break them.
Babies sleep, but you're supposed to grow out of it by the time you're a teenager.

It's genetic as far as scientists can tell
In the wild, it was beneficial to have some people up and some asleep at different times, if you had a group of hunter-gatherers, there would be some people up keeping watch at pretty much any point all night, with all of them just doing their natural sleep rhythm, not to mention biphasic sleep.
tl;dr reddit-tier tism, it's just how you're wired, and night owls have always been fucked in industrial society
