garbage? no
suboptimal? i guess? but the hyperoptimization mindset for exercise is stupid, there's a general range of effectiveness for movements and programming and anything that falls within it can work for some better than others, if you enjoy deadlifting its a movement where you get to move big weights, which helps build mental and physical endurance, which in turn allows you to push yourself harder in other sets now that you know what an actual hard rep feels life
on the other hand if they hurt or you simply dont like them there's plenty to replace them with, but you are not gonna stay small or blow up just because of 1 exercise

Genetic outliers. The top 1% of humans are very strong and you can't ever become them.
Furthermore people who deadlift are relatively rare in the sphere of fitness and I'd guess 90% of thosexor more have been training for many years using many different techniques and only a tiny part of that was deadlifts. Not many jacked dudes have deadlifts as their main lift if at all.
You see Eddie Hall or Thor and think it's the cheat code to unlock a big build but it's not. It's just another lift. Far more men have gotten big without deadlift

Most bodybuilders will tell you the only reason they deadlift is because moving big weights is fucking fun, not because it does much for their physique. Plenty of them also don't deadlift at all or stopped deadlifting at some point, because it grows their waist too much and is too much risk for too little reward. Deadlifts don't grow your waist, but taking androgenic anabolic steroids and anabolic peptides that make all of your soft tissues grow while overeating and training your obliques and rectus abdominis will.

There is little difference between deadlifts, RDLs and SLDLs since they all load the spine along with its extensors, glutes, hams and a bunch of other muscles on your thighs.

Deadlift surely hits more body parts than any other exercise, but the thing is, it doesn't excel the other focused ones except the glutes and hamstrings, which are the main targets of deadlift not back, and you can do that without any risks that deadlift has with leg curls and squats. It is truly a mishmash exercise for good or bad with considerable injury risk, so it's your choice. Dorian Yates always carefully avoided any risks but he did DL, but not squats. Besides Tom Platz was the opposite.

Because the barbell is in a fixed position. Therefore some bodies have an extremely good leverage over it. Manlets with longer legs and even freakishly longer arms will have a deadlift that's 200-300lb higher than their squat.

Top 1% isn't that difficult. If you lift 225 on the bench you're already within the global top 1% of strength.
