/fat/ - Fat loss general
>Who is /fat/ for?
For Marbled Mammoths, working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

reposting from last thread:

Blood pressure is the greatest fucking troll of all time. I am starting to think that blood pressure LITERALLY is not measurable. Its ENTIRELY a function of how tight your cuff gets and has nothing to do with your heart and shit.

Every morning I take my blood pressure and get an ASTRONOMICALLY high reading. I then take the reading again 2 more times. By the third reading its always a pretty good number. I can feel the variance in how tight the cuff feels which directly predicts what the reading will be.

My machine is an omacron which is supposed to be a good one. I could buy another machine but I doubt it would do shit. God I am losing my fucking mind over blood pressure. I have ordered literally every perscription blood pressure medication over the internet. I cannot get over seeing these high numbers and thinking about how my kidneys are going to fail and shit.

So today my readings were 148/69 then 142/63, then 115/71. All three were taken over the course of a couple minutes. There is no fucking way that adjusting my arm slightly lowered my blood pressure 30 god damn point. I really do feel like I am approaching some kind of autistic melt down over this.

The reason is because you eat salty food all the time so when you stop eating food your body is still gonna expect salty food and excrete alot of salt

If you were a nosalt chad then when you stop eating food you wouldn't lose any salt

Thats just how it works
Anonymous No.76606145

>If you were a nosalt chad then when you stop eating food you wouldn't lose any salt
Not how it works. If you dont eat any salt (like I used to do) you still excrete salt through piss and sweat. I used to piss clear as water all the time, and a LOT.
I added a bit of salt to my diet in cooking and I piss a lot less and less clear. Not dark yellow but not almost water translucent.
There's abalance and it's not overly salty neither none at all.

I started to just keep repeatedly measure my blood pressure until I get roughly repeating numbers and then consider that to be my real blood pressure. Does that sound like a reasonable way of doing it?

Moving the monitor from a stiff wooden chair at my dinner table over to love seat where I am in a more comfortable position also seemed to lower my blood pressure quite a bit. Seems I was tensing up more than I thought I was.

Still not sure if I should buy a new monitor though. Probably should just so I can double check the readings.

This is why I don't cut up and fry the absolute shit out of my 1.5lb of chicken a day diet. Makes it harder and slower to digest so it really levels out the insulin curve.

You're actually doing a lightweight dry fast by doing that. Thirst overwrites hunger by a large margin which is why drinking dehydrating salt water seems to help your fasting. Plus your body eats your fat faster to get metabolic water so it has more calories available to it. You could get the same effect by limiting water consumption on a regular fast without murdering your kidneys.
You could could also limit water intake on a regular diet and still get the hunger reducing effects and just deal with a little bit of thirst. I'm not suggesting full dry fasting schizo, just enough to keep you on the edge of thirst is enough for some benefit which is basically what you're already doing.

I honestly don't know where to ask so I hope I can get some input here as it's relatively active by comparison

I suffer from headaches (exertion maybe) during the last few reps of bigger compound lifts, and after it triggers, it hangs around for the rest of the workout.
Even if I go lighter and increase reps, I can feel the pressure building up in my head leading towards the same headache
>I've had head scans and no signs of aneurysm or any neurological issues
>Panadol / Ibuprofen helps numb it for the most part
>Supplements: 5g of creatine and 1-2 scoops of protein powder every day
>PPL split, valsalva breath hold during lifts (exhaling and inhaling at top of movements), but even if I try not to hold and exhale during concentric it makes no difference

There seems to be zero links between creatine and headaches, but I'm tempted to cut it out anyway

Try heavy amounts of yoga and stretching. Something may be misaligned in your body and whenever you put pressure on it that pressure transfers to your spine and up to your head. It's even possible it's a jaw misalignment thing aka a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). You might just be clenching your teeth too hard or w/e. Try exercises and stretches specifically for TMD and other parts of your spine and neck.
The other thing is it may be a sinus issue. Even a little completely unnoticeable low grade inflammation in there is enough to wreck havoc when you put pressure on your body. My friend has this one because of an immune disorder and he gets constant headaches from exertion. May be why ibuprofen helps you.
"I get headaches" is such a vague complaint so good luck. Start rotating in various doctors to stick their fingers and instruments in you to wiggle them around if you really want a real diagnosis.

Is hunger just unavoidable if I want to lose 2lbs a week? I've been eating super clean with a mix of like 30% veggies 30% meat 30% healthy fats 10% other complex carbs. This worked great for about 4 months but the past month I've just been getting really bad hunger pangs and will end up binging whatever I cook. I've still been under maintenance but the progress is just way too slow. I'm not sure if it's a problem with my diet, if I'm burnt out or I just need to nut up and learn to deal with being hungry all the time.

Blood pressure is real my dude. In the morning. You sit in the chair. You put the cuff on. You DO NOT push the button. You wait. Breathe. Happy thoughts. One minute. Ok now push the button. Congratulations, you just skipped on taking two useless readings.
I was on BP medication when I was obese. I stayed on it as I was losing weight until BP started dropping low, which feels bad. Now I've been off my meds for over 6 months.

If you're already taking all the fun supplements, consider one more: Potassium.
How? Buy some "Lite Salt" (dumb name I know), which has 50% sodium chloride, 50% potassium chloride. And use that wherever you'd use salt in your cooking. And since you don't eat out, now all your salt intake also fills you up with potassium. Electrolytes are now balanced, and so is your blood pressure. It's that easy.
One minor caveat: Unless you're genetically blessed like me, it might make your food taste bitter. If you're afflicted with this, put the salt *after* you're done cooking the food. The bittermen claim their potassium tastes better when it hasn't been heated first.

So many people don't realize that your hunger is completely malleable based on your food intake. Fatties who gorge on sweets/eat their feelings don't realize your brain literally changes how it feels about food when you start working out and eating healthy (albeit, it puts up resistance at first). I see a lot of tumblr snark whenever someone says "fuck yeah I love salads/healthy food" and they 100% think that fit people have the exact same cravings as them and are "pretending" to like healthy food.
>crazy how that works
It's so wild in a world where you can easily test if calorie counting works, people still pretend it's impossible. earlier this year, I 1) calculated TDEE, 2) subtracted 500 calories, and 3) started counting calories and made sure I was at that 500 calorie deficit (with some exceptions here and there). After about 3-4 months, I did some quick calculation, and I lost 1.2 lbs/week on average. Pretty spot on. But people will scream and yell and swear online that its impossible and doesn't work that way rather than....try it out.

Weight loss is a function of deficit, time, exercise, and hormones
Your body has a set metabolic rate (how much energy you consume over time), based on your body composition. You can increase this slightly with exercise, or by altering your hormones (eating cleaner food, drugs).
Since your metabolic rate is very difficult to change, the other part of the equation is the deficit you're in. Fasting is the maximum possible deficit. With the time frame he's looking at, the only way he'll even have a chance of losing that much weight is to be in the maximum possible deficit most of the time.

>Why do you say fasting is the only way to get close? It's more along the lines of = it will get you there quicker, no?
Basically yes. From my experience, the deficit they are aiming for (roughly 1500 calorie deficit/day) is not sustainable eating every day. It is sustainable through fasting cycles, though, and eating on non-fasting days to average 1500 calorie deficit. Theoretically you don't have to fast for a 1500 calorie deficit, but in practice it will generally not work (food-to-brain signaling is a bitch to overcome).

It's not 100% set in stone the mechanism (mostly because its multiple complicated mechanisms together), but its a known phenomenon. Has to do with your body switching toward ketosis, and ghrelin (the hunger hormone) decreasing while leptin (satiety hormone) increases. Our evolutionary evolved bodies are used to switching between fasted and fed states because our ancestors wouldn't always have 3 meals/day on hand at all times. We are evolved to go through fasting periods and our body adapts to those conditions.
Eating 3x/day is a modern invention, and it really fucks with our normal evolves selves by changing our relationship with food a lot. Even eating a small meal resets the fasting clock and our hormones kick back into wanting food.

mercury poisoning from chunk light tuna (the most common type) is basically impossible unless you're eating 4-5 cans a day for months
Albacore and yellowfin have 3x as much mercury as chunk light (and less selenium, which has an anti mercury absorption effect on your body), and the only recorded cases of mercury poisoning have come from albacore tuna. The fisherman guy that got poisoned was eating the equivalent of over a pound of albacore each day for months.

If I get hungry, I might eat something light high in protein, maybe 200 kcal max, and that's enough to put an end to it. I don't see how I could be so hungry that end eating 2000 calories more, that just doesn't happen unless you just ignore your hunger and binge. The reason I got so far in the first place is because I ate out of boredom, not hunger. Looking at my weight loss after this time (15 kg), I am probably closer to a 1200 kcal deficit in practice.

If you were normal and went to a junkfood diet you'd feel the same way. Guys that do 3 months in boot camp for the Marines almost always hit McDonalds up on the way home before their next posting and they end up getting sick and shitting their brains out. You're going to feel like shit in the near term until you fully adopt a new diet, stop eating high calorie slop and make your food from scratch, literally get everything out of your house that is packaged food and just have ingredients like potatoes or lettuce, tomatoes, beans, chicken, ground beef etc.

How can I get shredded as fast as possible if I'm not actually fat? Should I just fast?

I'm around 5'10 and 179lbs right now, have semi-visible abs when flexed, so I suspect around 13% or so. I spent over a year losing weight somewhat steadily from 215lbs to 170lbs and it was pretty miserable since I became a cardiofag, didn't lose much strength because I didn't have a lot to begin with. I gained some muscle rapidly on a linear progression program in the last couple of months so I look similarly lean at 179lbs as I did at 170lbs, which is good, I know half of this is probably water weight too, but it bothers me because I never truly got fully lean. I suspect I'm not far off the goal and probably need like 6lbs of fat loss

I think 30" is probably a good goal to ensure that I'd be actually fully lean. I started to see veins on my arms but they were never clear and defined if that makes sense, like there was just a few more % to go.

I'm still pushing my progression in lifting hard and I think my strength progress suffers on a slight deficit the longer I let it go on, as I learned last year, whereas if I can lose a huge amount in a couple weeks or so, it might be hard but I don't feel the same kind of weakness and suffering for anywhere near as long and can bounce back fast or maintain strength.

but you're probably going to want to train your shoulders at some point. also grip. grip is good. you could get gloves for it though, if you don't want your hands to betray that you indulge in the occasional bout of effort.

Don't worry too much about dosage. As long as you don't feel hungry, it's working and if they tell you that you need to increase your dose, yet you're still seeing the same results, ignore them, they're just trying to get you on the more expensive doses quicker.

You will probably get some digestive side effects at some point along the way. So, be prepared for that, but they come and go, and it's not a huge deal.

I’m 88.5 kg (~195 lbs) and aiming to get down to 72.5 kg (~160 lbs). I’m using LoseIt as my calorie tracking app.

I’ve lost weight before with calorie counting but gained it all back and more. This time I want to make lasting changes. I’m comfortable with tracking, I know how to eat, what to avoid, and how to cook healthier alternatives.

My work is mostly sitting at a desk, so I set my activity level in the app to Not Active. That gives me a budget of about 1600–1700 calories per day to lose 0.5 kg per week. I also selected the high protein program.

I don’t really enjoy weight lifting and it’s not practical for my current lifestyle. Instead, I train boxing 2–3 times a week for about an hour. These sessions are very intense — I’m drenched in sweat at the end and it’s both cardio and muscularly demanding. I was looking into adding weightlifting sessions as well, but this means I can't recuperate from the boxing training effectively enough, or the boxing means I can't recuperate from the weight lifting sessions. Kind of a hassle.

Where I’m confused: when I log boxing into the app, it adds 600–800 calories back into my budget. I feel like that’s overestimated, but I often eat those bonus calories as a reward. I’m worried this might be slowing or stalling my fat loss.

My main question is: Should I stick to my base budget (1600–1700 calories) every single day, regardless of exercise, or is it fine to eat the extra calories the app gives me?

Eating back calories is a terrible idea, especially as a reward. You don't need an 800 calorie reward for boxing. That's a very disordered mindset, no offense. If you're hot and sweaty after a boxing workout, eat a 50 calorie fudge sickle. You don't need 800 calories of food as a reward, Again, no offense, but that's how you got to the situation that you're at right now. Stick to the budget that the application gives you before exercise. If you're tempted to eat back the calories, for example, if you burn 800 (or so it says in the application), just add something like 8 tablespoons of butter in the snack section just to get yourself back to baseline calorie intake so that the number doesn't change and you aren't tempted.
Anonymous No.76611917
>>76611704
That's my point. Say you maintained at 2500 calories and you fast for two days, you didn't run at a 5000 deficit purely off of fat stores because it wasn't long enough, right? If it's roughly 3500 calories to 1lb of fat, it would be slightly more than that amount burned, but not actually 5000 calories worth of fat since you needed a day to deplete stores. So it would be like 1lbs of fat loss over 48 hours rather than closer to 2lbs?
>your body refills the glycogen stores over the next 1-2 days while running off of fat

what I'm saying is that on the app, my budget will be 1600, but if I train while wearing my apple watch, or manually add the training in the app as "1h of boxing", it will automatically add 500/600 calories to my budget. So I can eat some shit and still be "within budget" according to my calorie tracker. And I FEEL like that's wrong.

I got where I am because I stopped tracking, when I track I track correctly, I just feel like this specific part of tracking is weird.

It's an irrelevant question. You shouldn't be eating back those calories. You don't need an 800 calorie "reward". You're trying to lose weight. The point is to consume less calories than you burn. I don't know what's so hard about this.

The entire point of exercise to lose weight is to keep the gap as big as possible, not to fit it in with more food

I guess I could just do that yeah, I don't like skipping work but you're probably right. I've had this pain for almost a week now, working since last Friday, and it was getting better but today I woke up from pain ten times worse that it was at its worst. Thanks anon.

I'd caution against overestimating calories burned from activity, and would prefer to underestimate rather than overestimate so that you can eat and still be certain you can maintain a good deficit.
>>76611942
I'd lean towards 300 calories extra on days with more activity like those with an hour of a cardio session or an hour of lifting, or boxing in your case. It's better to eat as little as possible for performance and consistently hit your targets if you can, so there is no requirement to increase either. If it turns out you were burning 500 calories extra in reality, it just means you'd get some "bonus" fat loss but you'd never accidentally eat more than you burned.

Ok let me rephrase this
>If I tell the app I don't do activity, it sets my budget to 1600
>If I tell the app I do some activity, it sets my budget to 2200
>If I tell the app I don't do activity, and then do activity anyways, it automatically puts me up to 2200
that's what I find weird

Started taking Nebivolol to lower my blood pressure. It didn’t lower it one bit but now my resting heart rate is 35. Now I’m trying to order telmisartan with crypto from some “research chemicals” website so I don’t die. Life is hell. BP was 156/82 this morning and I have already lost 30 pounds and that didn’t help it at all either. Also been doing cardio and walking 4 miles a day that didn’t change my blood pressure either. Also using every over the counter supplement that claims to lower BP and they do nothing

On the off chance that this comes off sounding condescending, since you're already at the stage where you're using crypto to order research chemicals, have you tried drastically lowering your salt and/or Doing actual legitimate research into proven supplements like hibiscus, potassium, beetroot, citruline and nitrate supplements?

Telmisartan is a legitimate medication I just don’t feel like I could stand waiting a month to see a doctor and then deal with them trying to dick me around or give me a different medication

Yes I was eating so little salt that I was having involuntary muscle twitches all the time and I had to eat some more. I went 2 weeks without eating any salt and 2 daily bananas. I also take 5mg of cialis daily which does nothing for my blood pressure but does give me boners at the slightest stimulus
