Anyone bike for fun/cardio?
I never really see any bicycle threads on fit, and I didn't see any obvious love on out or sports/XS, so I dunno if there's a better place for it. I used to bike all the time when I was in college and it was moreso out of necessity and convenience to travel around that city. And I rode some shitty quality bikes. I wound up buying picrel back in like 2018 on a good discount because it looked good on paper, but I just didn't care for it at all. And at that point I'd gotten my grown up job and moved out to the burbs which aren't at all bike friendly in my area. I still have it and it's in great shape and I have tried taking it back out to do something new, but I still kinda hate it. I figured that I could tool around with it because I'm pretty handy, but all of its standards are out of date, so upgrading it really isn't worth it. I'd probably be better buying a new bike and keeping the old one as a beater that I can then maybe eventually upgrade with old parts as I upgrade a way better base. Wondering what all you guys do bikewise? Nothing remotely MTB worthy around me, road biking seems gay as fuck, and gravel seems to be the new rage, and probably something like a gravel or more likely allroad would be the most useful for me. MTB does seem fun as hell, but I'd never really be able to use it other than making a weekend vacation out of it, because the only good trails are like a 3-5 hour drive. And I drive a fucking Altima. Which I can put a hitch on that, but then I'm dropping another grand just to chauffeur the fucking bike around for an at best 10-20 times a year excursion.

I enjoy a nice bike ride on a summer evening, just around mostly residential streets near me. It's something to do, a decent light cardio workout (sometimes I add in a sprinting workout at a school campus I bike to), and a way to enjoy the weather and just be alone and think, and I dint bring my phone or a helmet

The best way to get some cardio imo. It's an actual functional way of going around town without your car. Compared to running, you get to see more scenery on your route, and feel the wind during hot summers.

cardio sucks because people do it for time and distance. It's the ultimate watching-the-numbers activity and watching numbers is boring. If you want to get good use out of your bike, you should use it for transportation - on bike paths, dirt paths, sidewalks, streets, and minimally: America's evil and stupid road-street hybrids. Never ever on roads, obviously. Find some place you can go while avoid roads or hybrid-roads, and go there and do something there and come back. If you can go to interesting places, even better. A beater has the advantage of you caring less if it's stolen or vandalized.
If a practical destination isn't possible, all you can do is flaneuring - focus on seeing what's going around you, bird watch, people watch, LARP as neighborhood patrol.
If you can't avoid roads, junk it and buy a rowing machine, or put it away until you can move, and next time take a look at the bike path layer of Google Maps.

Part of it is definitely me. I just need to get better with learning proper gearing. It's a slightly tighter 2x10 gearing. It's my first "road style" bike ever. I kept with Trek because the best bike I had before it was one of their budget hybrids, can't remember the model exactly. I know it was an older DS 1 or 2. Other than that, the only things I think I can complain about is that some of the gear shifts aren't very smooth, and as far as I can tell, everything is set properly. Again, probably user error, but the right side bigger shifter, for moving to a smaller gear on the cassette seems wonky a lot of the time. It has that kinda 2 stage thing going on. I thought that it was supposed to be that one click moves one gear, and two clicks moves two, but it's super inconsistent. Other than that, it's experimenting with saddles to find my perfect assmate. I was more hipster back then so I got a brooks b17, and just didn't care for it at all, even with proper break in. I just got a super cheap WTB volt off ebay that I'm working with now. I don't love it, but don't hate it. I'm considering getting one of those AliExpress 3d printed copies that seem to be pretty well regarded though. The one thing I definitely need to do is get better tires. I'm still running the budget ones that came on the bike and with tubes. But I was thinking of trying to just get better used wheels. But that's where the compatibility issues seem to creep in. The bike is 6 bolt disk brake, but with 100/135QR, so it really limits what I can find. And I've been autistically researching it, and I can kinda make some things work, but it kind of requires the stars aligning and probably using adapters for the hub body brake mount and/or the hub endcaps. Which very few hubs offer. Which is why I was thinking I'd just leave this bike alone, use it as is, which is perfectly fine, but also not be super scared to leave it locked up for a few hours out in the city.

That's kind of what I missed about living in the city. Biking was just simply more convenient a lot of the time. My city is probably less bike friendly than average, but it was fine. But then I moved out to the more rednecky suburs for lower rent and less space, but it's pretty much zero bike infrastructure. There are definitely good road and light trail bike routes, but that's more of a bike rack and 15-30 minutes drive to adventure, which is more of a use half of a day off of work kind of thing. I am looking to move to a new city though. Mine currently sucks now since Covid made all the WFH techies move here and it drove up housing but my wages in healthcare have pretty much stayed the same. I can pay similar rents but make 15-30% more in somewhere like Denver metro, which is where I'm currently looking.

I bought one recently with the intent of cycling to work
Cycled it home from the guy I bought it from, no problem
Couple of days later went to take it out again, and front tyre was completely flat
It's a tubeless tyre, I'm not familiar with how they work
Bought a pump and some sealant, then pumped it up and left it to see how fast it would leak
It's been a month now and it's still totally full
What gives? Did the tyre seal itself? Is it only with my weight on it that it'll go down? Do I just need to always bring the pump with me when I cycle to top it up? Should I put in the sealant or not bother?

I ride my Trek MTB every other day between lift days, best form of cardio in the sense that I don't get bored, an hour on a treadmill or eliptical feels extremely boring and tedious, where as I can go for 1-2 hours on my bike and its fun every time.

80% of the time I'm riding on pavement and its good steady cardio, but actual MTB trails are extremely good cardio and very intense with lots of uphill.

It's also a universal form of "hanging out cardio" i go on bike rides with my GF, my friends, and sometimes with my brother and his kids, always a good time.

Yeah you could say I'm pretty bike pilled

Take the skateboard pill. It has a lot of bullshit terminology but it's been good cardio for even 3 or 4 mile rides around. Sometimes efficiency is counter productive to it being good cardio. I find it's a lot more convenient for short trips since you can just pick it up and take it inside.

Yes, that's how tubeless tires work. The sealant is a kind of gluey goop with fibers in it, so it does a pretty good job of sealing up any kind of small pinprick sized holes. I'm not the expert on it at all, but I'm thinking that anything much larger than like 1mm or so of a hole probably can't really be compensated by the sealant, which is why the repair kit's for those kind of tires is basically just like a rubber stick, and a tiny shrimp fork that you plug into the hole to shrink it, and then allow the sealant to do its namesake job of sealing that plug in.
Anonymous No.76689740 [Report] >>76691391
>>76687352
Or to be more specific in your case, the sealant also seals the bead of the tire to the rim. So adding sealant made the seal again. Tubeless is mostly the best way to go these days, but you do need to upkeep it slightly. Depending on how much you ride, you need to add a little sealant every few months. I'd google about it to get an idea. It's not super hard, but it's also something you want to be informed about because getting a flat that you can't deal with miles away from home fucking sucks.

I ride 30-50 miles per day, i average 21-22mph, on a good day with no wind 23mph

if you do want to actually ride, get a road bike, you can get a nice cheap aluminum frame road bike for a couple hundred bucks, and if you like it put more money in to a used carbon frame bike.

I can burn around 2000 calories in 50 miles if I'm putting in effort.
I started riding years ago because of what happened to my dad. He was an avid runner, he ran every single day for most of his life and it destroyed his knees, he is in his late 60s now and he's probably going to have to get knee replacements on both knees because he has so much pain now, but he still exercises by riding a bike. Much lower impact on your knees.

Hey man, from someone that can juggle 5 clubs: you’re rotating them with your hands a little too much, just try to flick your wrist and have faith in your rotations (and the trajectory of the club) instead of shepherding them around like that.
Juggling always looks silly but it’ll look less clumsy.
Good on ya, though!

You ever fuck with cigar boxes? They’re incredible cardio and a leg workout if you’re going hard in the paint.
One of my favorite props.
Unrelated: the other day a small child was freaking the fuck out while I was waiting in line at the grocery store and its poor mom looked like she was about to break, so I took out the oranges I had in my basket and juggled to distract the little dude.
It worked, and the mom thanked me.
I share this because it is incredibly rare that juggling ever actually looks cool.

dunno man, when I walk through the city just juggling 3 balls doing very basic tricks, I get applause and compliments from people every 10 minutes or so, including entire bus loads of elementary school kids clapping and shouting. Practicing in the park got me laid twice this year, once with a woman who wanted me to teach her, the other time with a single mom who was happy I distracted her kid for a while.

I like the concept of ebikes, but some of the realities of them still don't have me sold. You're looking at like $1500-2000 for a modest quality one for commuting, and it makes them the highest value target for thieves. And DJI's new motor has kicked off a power arms race for MTB's, which is most likely going to lead to ebikes getting a flat out ban at most state and all national parks in the not too distant future.

And neither was "athletic" before, just in ok shape. On the other hand, I don't want to deal with having to do a daily run or WOD's with a partner. I like to do my exercise solo, it's kind of like meditation for me. It's hard to find something in between. Enough exercise to keep yourself decent, but not obsessive over it. >sprint intervals
Assuming that there's not some glaring issue with your bike/gearing/shifting skill, pretty much just that. Computers can help with pacing and efficiency, but it's one of many marginal gains, such as dropping $3k on an DA groupset over a 105. Most people would be better served buying an indoor trainer for that same cost to much more reliably do interval training. Depends on your routes though, just even doing more steady state stuff can get you there. 16mph isn't terrible, but I guess how hard have you been trying? Someone that's mildly dedicated would probably be getting closer to 20 on anything but an absolute garbage bike. On second thought, a head unit might not be terrible. It could maybe bring to light some issue you're not seeing. If you need power meter cranks too, it'll be a hefty cost though. If you already have them, but for some reason don't have a head unit, try and borrow one for a few rides. I don't think most people need one on the regular, but they're nice to have.

tl;dr
>live in Japan :^O country side
>have my own home gym
>run every morning
The running part isn't working out for me, I ride motorcycles so I figured maybe cycling would be a nice replacement for running. I'm looking at two bikes at almost the same price:
Giant Contend 1
Shimano Sora, 9.6kg, aluminum frame
Giant Contend AR 4
Shimano Claris, 10.3kg, aluminum frame
The biggest difference seems to be that the Contend 1 has a slightly better groupset, while the AR 4 has better overall components e.g. disk brake vs old rim brakes on the Contend 1. Weight wise, they are also very close.
So, spoonfeed me? I don't intend on ever competing, I just want a reliable bike that I can take out every morning down the river path.

No, the computer/head unit that communicates with a sensor that's (typically) in your crankset. Some can measure HR, but they're mainly for measuring speed, distance, elevation, and wattage. Most ones these days also do GPS. I ride for fun, so I don't care enough, so I just use my phone with Strava at the most. They have their place, but I think to many amatuers with dillusions that they could go pro just get too sucked into them.

Do you have links to the specific bikes? I tried looking really quick, but Giant doesn't seem great about listing their parts. The Contend 1 seems like an older model not in production anymore, and I'm only guessing that the AR4 is using the current gen Claris because they don't list the actual model number. It's possible that they are basically the same groupset due to trickle down. Older gen Sora is basically current gen Claris. I have an older bike with Shimano 105 5700, and that's pretty much equivalent to modern Sora/Tiagra.

hydraulic brakes arent for the stopping power
combined with thru axles, hydraulic brakes are pretty much self adjusting, you never have to worry about messing with them, unlike mechanical brakes with quick release, where you have only one brake pad pushing againts the other, and quick release allowing you to sometimes overtighten and push the fork more to one side, leading to you constantly messing with the brakes

trust me get hydro brakes, even with quick release they are a whole class above mechanical brakes and will make you trust your brakes

They don't list the model numbers of the parts so it's hard to say at a glance. But they both look like fairly equivalent parts. I'm also not familiar with the lower end groupsets as much as 105 and up. At a glance, I'm thinking that the AR 4 is maybe slightly better between the 2. The Defy 3 is probably pretty close too. Is there not a good used market in nipponland? If you're just looking for aluminum bikes, it's a pretty safe bet to buy used. Damage is more obvious. You'd just need to read or watch a couple used bike buying guides to get an idea. And if you're at all handy, you can often get a steal on a used bike that needs something replaced. You can get really good quality bike tools for cheap these days. I also work on cars/motorcycles, and I don't cheap out too much on those tools, but I've been perfectly fine with some cheap "Bike Hand" toolset from Amazon for most bike stuff.

Disc brakes are - mostly - a meme on road bikes. They are better in wet conditions, that's for sure, but in dry conditions there's no difference worth mentioning. They're more expensive, require more maintenance and cost more to maintain. So unless you really enjoy riding in the rain there's no real benefit to disc brakes.
As for reliability they're probably about the same when they come out the box, what matters is how you maintain them.
I would say what groupset is on there doesn't matter all that much for a casual rider, especially if it's your first roadbike. I'd say try them out and just see which one feels best.

I don't need to imagine it, that's how bikes were made for a hundred years and it worked perfectly fine. It takes a long ass time to wear out a rim and by then you will likely have spent more money servicing your disc brakes than a new rim costs.
>imagine not being able to brake in the wet
See:
>They are better in wet conditions, that's for sure, but in dry conditions there's no difference worth mentioning
>and what benefits do you get? rim brakes are cheaper and lighter
Yes, they're cheaper and easier to maintain, require far less maintenance, they're lighter, and while it's a matter of taste I'd argue they look better.
There is a case to be made for disc brakes: if you often ride in conditions where the braking surface gets wet / dirty. Most people don't do that. If it's pouring down outside they won't go out for a bike ride. But if you're the kind of person that does that, go ahead and get a bike with disc brakes. If you're not, it's a waste of time and money.

Asking because this seems like a place someone might have a recommendation. I recently got a stationary bike and new bike after not riding one since 14. The only problem I've ran into is sitting on either of them for more than ten minutes makes my dick and balls go numb. I have tried a wider seat thinking that might help and nope still pinching the nerve. I also tried some shorts with more cushion but that didn't do much either. that happened to me as well and was very annoying but... it just doesn't happen anymore. Maybe I'm sitting differently. I did try to sit more on my 'sitting bones'. Maybe I lost just enough weight that the nerve doesn't get pinched anymore.
For the real bike something you can do is stand up often to pedal. It's more fun anyway, and lets you straight your back out and not always be hunched over like a tryhard. If I'm doing anything different, this is the only thing that comes to mind - that I don't just plop my ass on the seat for a solid 60min and only move my legs, but rather I change position pretty often.

If you have really bad problems with your grundle and balls, it's generally recommended to get a saddle that has a relief cut. There's also noseless saddles like picrel. I've never used them myself but some people like them. I heard they came into development after some big study on bicycle cops having pain and ED and stuff and switching to those seats pretty much eliminated their issues. I think the only real disadvantage to them is that you don't have a nose to use to help with bike handling, but with a stationary bike, that's not an issue at all. Might be worth looking into.

To judge whether or not a used bike is a good deal requires some experience. You need to know where to look for problems and determine what state things are in. It can be a steal or it can be a money pit.
It's hard to tell from the picture but the drivetrain looks like it might be quite worn, which means you sooner or later have to swap it all out.
Other than that it looks in pretty good shape, the owner has probably taken care of it. But there's things you don't see, like bearings in the wheel hubs, bottom bracket, headset. Then there's the frame, which truth be told I can't say much about because I've never owned a carbon bike, but you might not be able to see the issues with the naked eye.
But to wrap it up a bit, if the bike is in good condition $600 seems like an alright deal.

I think about this all the time because I commute by bike. You only get a "workout" if you choose to, and if you're not breaking all traffic laws you're definitely not getting a workout. For example and this may just be my long time conditioning, I can sprint flat out for 3-5 minutes without elevated HR, without breathing hard, etc., some of this is anaerobic, but mostly aerobic, but not even really breathing hard. Normally, you aren't even doing half the HR as running.

If you live in a flat place, you have to be going fast continuously for long periods of time to develop HR. If that's urban you can't sustain high HR stopping for lights and signs. If you're lucky enough to live in a hilly place like me, then it's easier. I ride steel frame. why? because the weight is the workout.

The only way to ride for high HR is flat out. That is not the norm for commuters who are way more conventional. They're also less experienced and actually think stopping for signs and lights makes them safer. One should spend as little time as possible with no forward momentum and not just because having no momentum means being unable to avoid an oncoming car, but because HR plummets.

If you want to make biking a workout, you choose the heavy bike, you choose the hills, you go hard all the time etc. but even then I draw the line if a grade is more than 5% I'll walk it. Riding up hills is something only noobies and e-bikes do. You can maintain HR and push up grades while stretching your calves.

got up to 280lb 3-4 years ago. down to 160 now.
at no point did my opinions on cardio "for distance and time" change. I'm getting into running after finally finding a book (Running Revolution) that is actually good and not complete fucking garbage written like a motivational self-help autobiography, and ran/walk/skated for a very comfortable 6km.
yeah bud even if I halve my bf% again, I'm not going to think that cardio "for distance and time" is a fun thing to do. Neither do you or will you.

get a bike, lower the seat, and walk the bike around with your feet on the ground and in no danger of tipping over. Start depending less on the ground while you drift for short distances, and finally start peddling. Then fix your seat height.
Bikes are easy to learn, you just have to look crazy in the interim.

I live on the top of a very tall hill and this is the minimum route length I have to take every night coming home, frequently I’ve biked 10-15 miles before I hit this two mile straight uphill. At least I get good cardio from it

I'm a dumb runner. Got annoyingly injured over the summer and decided to pick up cycling as cross training/plan B for the next injury, after like 15 years of never being on two wheels. Fuck me but bike handling is hard and riding is scary with my pathetically bad level of it + disproportionate cardio ability meaning I have no problem just pushing pedals (flat because being clipped in is also too scary). I've already fallen off twice and badly skinned my knee.

I have a entry level road bike from an old century ride that I ride on occasion. But I really like the fixed gear steel frame road bike I have in a super high gearing that I use as a workout bike. If the bike is too efficient you have to go 40+ miles to get a good workout. I don't want to spend all that time on the bike, just short jaunts.
