The main problem with soft sciences is that the studies they do are usually not that reproducible because there are too many parameters that go into a human that you neither know nor have any control over. Hence, they are not that good as a proof for the hypothesis.

It turns out Eas Tennessee State isn't a very rigourous university either, and is more of a diploma mill. I think the problem is that some people are uninformed on phd standards and academia in general - so as someone with some experience on this I think I'm qualified to clear up the confusion and misconceptions here.

Mike's work actually isn't anything unusual or notable at all for phd dissertations, in fact it's a very standard work. Most informed and intelligent people always expect Mickey Mouse standards from phds like that. There are tweets that are more coherent and say more of value than most people's phds. And not just women's studies and interpretive dance - STEM also, STEM might be the worst of all a lot of the time, particularly /fit/ stem. At least women's studies there's the possibility of learning something or thinking about something from something someone said.

So it's ZERO surprise, much as I hate Mike I can't summon myself to hate him more for this because I simply would not have expected anything more. If he purchased a printable phd "certificate" online from an indian company, fine you got him on something. Other than that, there is literally no depth of standard it could be that would make me or many others surprised.
