Please help me /tpg/...
I have an old T62 that's my main driver, and got an old hp elitebook laptop (2nd gen intel), that I used for traveling, then I've repurposed is as cheap home server like NAS,jellyfin, general utility box (like setting containers with docker, encoding webms for 4chan, seeding torrents, etc), the specs aren't great (4GB ram, 320 GB HDD)
Recently I got Thinkcenter M910q for less than 100$ with modest specs (6th gen i5, 15 GB ram, 256 nvme, 2TB HDD)
Now I'm not sure what to do with it.
Do I ditch the comfy laptop experience?
Or, Stick with T62 and use M910q like the old hp laptop?

or do you envy women with big breasts?
>stick with the T62.
I'll probably do that, not only it has everything set as I want it, I'm to comfy with it.
What do I install on the M910q?
The hp laptop was just running arch with KDE.
Should I go with the same setup? or do some proper home lab stuff?
I don't want to duplicate the laptop os since it's a mess.

Is there a smol (sub 14", hard mode: 12" or smaller) thinkpad that is worth buying in this time and age?
My requirements:
- yuropoor
- โ‚ฌ500, max โ‚ฌ750
- Resolution at least fullHD
- Smol and light
- Decent (5+ hr) battery
- Win11 compatible (gen8+ intel cpu preferred gen10+, 16 ram)
- Usb c (thunderbolt et. al.) docking and charging.
My use case: wage slavery on the go. That's why I need windows in the first place (retarded rdp rules block rdp-in from non-windows platforms. Yes, even macs)

Is there an objective way to check whether the fans on your thinkpad is working aside from feeling the vents and "listening" for the fan? The vents get hot but don't they usually get hot whether the fan works or not? I mean, I don't know, I'm a techlet.
I have an X13 gen 1 AMD and I just wanna make sure.

Aliexpress is nice for random spare parts but I have mixed experience with batteries. I bought internal+external batteries for T450s a couple of years ago, the internal still works, but the external can't hold a lot of charge anymore, replaced it recently with a PATONA external chonker that gives it 8 hrs of charge.

If the fan isn't struggling it's a good sign. Usually failing fan/thermal paste leads to the fans being stuck at 100%, making rattling noises and the CPU is constantly throttled.
If you're still paranoid about your fan's effectiveness just check if your CPU gets throttled at all, there should be some software that checks automatically or just run benchmarks and compare with other people's numbers.

If it's too expensive or they don't have it search aliexpress and/or ebay. Every spare part I've bought of aliexpress was of decent quality, except some battery.

If it spins and the BIOS doesn't error out It's aight, if it grinds you should replace it as it is about to die, If you move the laptop around (say hold it at a 90ยฐangle) and then it starts to grind the fluid bearing may begin to fail a couple of months down the line.

The newest most up-to-date thinkpad in terms of specs that can be librebooted at the moment. That sort of "Old-modern" design is not that bad and the fact that you can get 8th gen CPUs in it is pretty nice since they are cheap as hell.

t440p
>terrible battery life
just carry an extra battery doe
>heavy
yeah but sturdy
>bad cpu by modern standards
Its no gaming PC, which thats not what it's for but you can also get them for $150 with a screen replacement on ebay. You won't find a laptop with a good 1080p screen full color spectrum for this price and build quality.
Its good enough for browsing the web and playing retro games up to gamecube and indie games.
>needs T450 touchpad mod to be usable
sure
>in the time period where thinkpad build quality was at it's shittiest
>most of them weren't 1080p, and replacing a display is a pain
It's not hard

Anyways when something goes wrong I can always order another screen or even swap the CPU/RAM if something goes bad.

The Tx40p is GOATed but unfortunately not powerful enough anymore.
I've had a T540p as a daily since 2022 and it has been nothing but pure bliss. The build quality is great and its built like a tank, no ThinkPad after has been as stury, the keyboard has a great feel and travel compared to the modern keyboards which feel like paper, the upgradeability and tinkerability is UNMATCHED by ANY ThinkPad, this is a hill I will die on.
But its time has come man. I would love to bring new internals for it to life like xyte.ch has been doing for ThinkPads older still. But unfortunately boomers shipped our production capabilities off to china so we cannot really go to a manufacturer, give a firm handshake and just build to our hearts content like we used to in the last century, like the chinese are doing now.

T14 Gen 1 and 2 suck donkey dick, I hate those generations so fucking much.
Removing the keyboard is less convenient.
The base cover is designed to be a pain in the ass to remove and the clips are easy to break.
The chassis material is the most shitty brittle piece of shit cheap ass plastic that wears very easily
And the battery life is dogshit compared to the Gen 3 AMD T14.
They're only popular with you poorfags now because companies have been liquidated those shit ass laptops.

Neither of the two touch options is as good as the low-power non-touch. Both are darker and more power-hungry, and the privacy guard one hurts some people's eyes.

Besides, you shouldn't be paying this much for a warmed-over Kaby Lake R chip. Look instead for a T480s either with QHD screen already installed, or with FHD non-touch that you can later replace with low-power. Both should cost you less than $250 in total.

I plan on transitioning to linux when win10 support ends, I have quite a bit of experience running a homeserver already but I haven't used linux on a desktop seriously in over 10 years.
My idea was getting linux on it and using remote desktop on my main PC to try different distros and to force myself to actually use it (if I dual booted I know the inconvenience of having to restart the PC every time would get annoying real fast). I didn't want to get another monitor and a KVM switch so running it headless sounded like a good idea to me.
I finally got it all up and running but VNC and RDP fucking suck and sunshine works great but stops working all the time, so I shelved the idea for now.

Imo the whole problem with screen swaps is that you can't get a good deal on a model with a busted screen, eBay scrappers want to give you a $20 discount on the exact same model but with a fucked up screen instead of a $100 discount to actually offset the cost of a midrange replacement, then you're spending 3x the price of the laptop for an actual good low power/high res screen from chingchongland.

At which point you might as well have just paid the premium for the model with that screen to begin with or simply have bought a newer model.

P14s Intel reuses the Chinese exclusive T14p chassis which is bigger and heavier, but has much bigger battery. It has the option for an NVIDIA GPU.
I get the AMD one because it's cheaper. I'm quite happy with it so far but get the OLED version if you could afford one, ghosting sucks.

I just bricked mine the other night because of a UEFI/BIOS update gone awry. I think I'll take the opportunity to upgrade the motherboard to one with an i7 (T480). The screen is completely unresponsive and a creepy code indicating a display malfunction (010288) is blaring out of the speakers after 10 seconds. Thing is, no external monitor works and the display seems alright.

- Pihole (porn and ad blocking)
- Syncthing (synchronise main machine and backups, as well as phone camera)

- Arr stack
- Qbittorrent w/ Gluetun VPN
- Wallabag (offline Pocket replacement) - this is a nice one, I don't allow a browser on my phone, so I use RSS on my main machine, and send articles to read on the phone via this
- Paperless-ngx (pdf documents and accounting stuff)

Can you not touch type?

Replacing it is easy. Two screws under the touchpad buttons. The hardest part is removing the buttons without breaking the clips. It helps to insert a fingernail between the far edge of the button and the rest of the keyboard while prying from the near edge of the button.

Without the screen it's $100 all in. What's a decent screen for them? I don't need touch, I just need to be able to look at things.

It will run Fedora in the end presumably, if that works with AMD.

same reason the t480 is "revered"
a bunch of thinkpad resellers had trouble selling t440p's and t480's because they are inferior machines (t440p has no trackpoint buttons shit battery life, fan issues etc., t480 has 2 usb ports, trackpoint issues, shit battery life etc.)
so, they relentlessly shilled these machines on r/thinkpad and /tpg/ claiming bs like "upgradeability" (the t440p maxes out at 16GB ram, "upgradeability" lol, even the w510 supports 32gb ram) and quad core cpus (you're not guaranteed to even get one on these machines, and other thinkpads of the era had quadcores too)
because people here like to think they are part of a special thinkpad club they follow and repeat whatever opinion is shilled the most, so people keep shilling the t440p and t480 even after the resellers stopped having to dump machines.
in reality they are local minima in terms of thinkpad quality

for the newer models T14g2, last model before they fucked the keyboard
a good newish model is the T460s/T470s, last models to support Windows 7 officially, great battery life, good enough cpu for most things. i put the s models instead of the T460/T470 because it's easier to find them with 1080p displays and they have better build quality, but the standard models are fine too
the x220/x230 are probably good, never owned one myself but i used my friend's x220 and it was nice.
anything older than that is not suitable for modern computing

X230-X270 are virtually identical in performance. Skip the X220/X230 if you're not married to the classic keyboard. iGPUs do get progressively (but marginally) better. It really comes down to condition and screen resolution/quality. Whatever you can find from X240-X270 is going to be basically the same.

I suspect this advice would also apply to the T440-70 too but maybe not, I haven't paid as much attention to them. You also get "s" or "p" variants that play at the margins of various parameters but aren't going to affect the bottom line a lot.

the x240-270 have shrunk keyboards (unlike the t440-t470), so it's not just a matter of chiclet vs membrane. for that reason alone you should stay away from those laptops, unless you have child/woman hands they are super uncomfortable to use, and you're never going to get used to them if you use other computers with non-shrunk keyboards
also the x240/t440 don't have trackpoint buttons, so you might as well just get a different brand. the only reason to get a thinkpad is for the trackpoint, if you're using a touchpad there are much better laptops at every price point, with better build quality, specs, and even peripherals

They've shrank it twice then. Between the x230 and x240, then again on the x280, which carried over into the 13" x series. Both times by small amounts (3% on the x280 shrink) but it seems like it's been noticed. I put my hands on an X13G1 a couple of weeks ago and my fingers weren't landing just right when touch typing (vs my x230) and now I know why. I would probably be able to adjust over time but it's good info to have.

lenovo bios updates have the tendency to fuck things up. the only time you should update a thinkpad's bios is to fix a problem with the bios (e.g. the issue with the T470 bios that caused cpu throttles to 0.38ghz, making systems unusable)
even then it's often not worth it unless it actually cripples your system (like the example i gave). lenovo released a bios update to fix trackpoint issues on some newer thinkpads a while back, but it ended up causing even more problems (i think the lenovo quietly deleted the update but my memory is hazy)

My only real concern is Office 365 which i daily on the T480 through RDP from my MSI, what am i losing out on? i dont mind CLI for most of my operations but i dont want to lose access to critical elements, suggest

I've got a 9 cell x220 battery. The system reports that it's only got 14% of the design capacity which makes it completely useless BUT it works for much longer than it should: It reports 100% for ~30 minutes of use, then goes from 100% to 5% somewhat rapidly (~10 minutes), then it continues to work normally at 5% for a long time. Seems like the battery has some life left in it, how do I make it work properly? I use arch btw.

I've got 2 other batteries and they always show the correct %.

Every laptop is modular as long as you can find parts.
Lenovo is actually really good and parts availability, and the third party market has great deals too.

Wanted to tell /tpg/ about a fix I did that saved a machine from the scrap heap or at least some unnecessary dismantling/repairs.

Long story short - L390Y screen glitched and completely locked up when you flexed the chassis a particular way, like picking it up from a corner.

Two cables running thru the hinges, the LCD and what I thought was the touch digitizer. Disconnected the non-LCD one and everything started working fine. Pick it up however you want, fold the screen completely over, whatever. Touchscreen still worked, which confused me. Then it dawned on me the LCD/digitizer was one cable, the other was for the webcam.

So a failing camera ribbon cable will absolutely give you some fucky symptoms that make you think it's something else. In the end I got to keep my touchshit which I was prepared to give up and ended up with a free privacy mod that saves me from putting a sticker over the camera anyway.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

This L390Y is about what I expected - serviceable but not worth writing home about. The IPS screen is decent comparatively vs any TN panels ever made, and some cheaper IPS ones I've seen.

I do enjoy I can drop another 8gb stick in it for $10, but the keyboard isn't great. I had a few minutes with an X13YG1 a while back and the keyboard was much better than this L390Y.

Thinkpads have always been mediocre machines in terms of build quality, modularity, peripherals (aside from top-of-the-line keyboards, but that's only on newer models: once you go back to the classic IBM thinkpad era, other business brands like COMPAQ had competitive keyboards), linux support, and price. People weirdly think that older Thinkpads are superior on these aspects, but really, take any business laptop and a thinkpad from the same year, and they'll be roughly comparable in terms of these aspects.
However, thinkpads have one thing going for them that no other modern laptop has: the trackpoint.
The trackpoint is LEGENDARY. It will change your life, I can't imagine going back to a non-thinkpad laptop ever solely because of the trackpoint. I could give two shits about soldered RAM, or shit thermals, or even key travel, but the trackpoint alone is a reason to use a Thinkpad, and it's also the only reason to use a Thinkpad.

I don't know where this chassis flex meme came from.
I work in repairs, and I compared a T14 Gen 4 and Gen 5 side by side and they had the same level of flex, Gen 4 actually flexed just a bit more. Held them up by the corner, pushed down on the palmrest, etc. Exactly the same. Why didn't people complain about flex with the Gen 3/Gen 4?
Goes to show the stupid fucking hivemind of people that haven't actually compared products.

The G5 keyboard is a bit more tactile than G3/G4, it's good to type on, I have a lot less mispresses on it.

Why are you looking at brand new T16's? Used sales sell for $400 to $700.
If I listed a brand new unopened X220/X230, it would sell for $1k too retard.

My m2000m P50 runs Minecraft with fast shaders and 100+ mods. Gets loud at 30 chunks render distance, but still hovers around 30fps at FHD.
If portability isn't really a criteria you might look for a 4k P70 with an m5000m or a P72 with a P4200 GPU.
otherwise AMD T14 G2/G3.

i use linux. still shit performance in minecraft (modern versions, 1.8 for pvp is okay), idk maybe you have a 720p display, or a better cpu. i have an i5-8350u and a 1080p display, it is laggy to the point where it's not worth playing.
30 fps on DS is still half speed, i would classify that as unplayable

It's the 300 nit non-touch 45% NTSC screen which is still better than the IPS screen that I had in my X230. If you're not a retard, you can just swap in a better panel.
Battery health is >95% for them.
I think it's a good deal.
T14s Gen 3 AMD Rembrandt has the best battery life to date, it still beats the unreleased Kraken/Strix Point T14s Gen 6 in battery life.
If it were the X13 (they have the same motherboard anyway), I'd immediately buy it.
I want an X13, I miss my X230.

Don't be retarded anon. Buy a used thinkpad with better states for $200-$300. If you want to spend a grand get a Framework. I'm assuming you're actually retarded and this isn't bait. No one here is going to tell you buying Appleshit is okay.

>the majority of college students use macbooks
Yeah because their parents buy them and they're retards. This wasn't the case when I was in school. When I was in school you saw a mix of various laptops with Windows pre-loaded and most students had either installed some form of UNIX on them or were still running Windows debloated. A couple had netbooks.

Buying Appleshit for compsci is like the dumbest thing ever. Now you're locked into spending money every year to sign bins for your own computer or you're forced to use shit like homebrew or rely on shitty ports of Linux to the hardware. By the time the linux port is halfway decent your Appleshit is "old" and it's time to replace it again to keep up with the churn (wouldn't want to look poor).

Furthermore this is thinkpad thread. So asking about Apple laptop is either bait or someone very uninformed. If you want to talk about Apple shit I'm sure there are at least 10 shill threads posted by the mod in the catalog. I don't even touch Appleshit if I get it for free because it's always such a pain in the ass to do anything fun on them. I have an Apple TV that sits unused because I can't even compile mpv front end for it because they want like $100 and want me to buy one of their shitty laptops to access the tools I need to compile the software. On top of that jail breaking it requires cracking it open and soldering on a usb port. The only "free" player that supports connecting to my Jellyfin server refuses to load half the audio/video codecs without nagging me for money. Only $100 a year to access my own files. :^)

The only people buying this crap that are in high school - college are children concerned with how other people see them and 9 times out of 10 they're spending their parent's money so they don't give a fuck about pissing away thousands of dollars every year or two to keep up with upgrades. They're also too dumb to realize Apple updates are making it slower and artificially nuking the battery.

"gaming" laptops are ass, awful battery life, heavy with noisy fans.

Macbooks (Apple silicon) have decent battery life and great build quality. Lots of tooling are available for arm now, and homebrew's not bad. And macOS is a lot closer to Linux than Windows are.

Don't think you need M3. A used M1 Pro is good enough (absolutely needs >=16GB RAM though).

way more false than true
fan controls can do pretty much whatever you want; a profile keeping your fans at ~1600-1800 rpm will sit in low 20s db, which is next to nothing
as for battery, it takes some fiddling with settings, but once you have a strict igpu profile you're looking at 5+ hours of browsing/video/office/whatever

NTA, but gaming Laptops are usually specbait with shitty build quality.
Agree with you on the fan controls.
But 5 hours is still shit for a 70-99Wh battery and lugging around a dGPU that'll stay switched off is pointless.
eGPU + well cooled 14Inch with over 10h battery life are just better in every way unless you game at home and during classes.
