READ THE WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think youโ€™re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

I'm trying to get a VoIP phone to work with asterisk. It's a NEC DT800, there's forum posts about people using different firmware but it's just one dude sending out emails with the firmware.

In Wireshark it just shows the correct SIP flow of REGISTER, 401, REGISTER, 200.
Any help anons?

for some unfathomable reason my house has an autistic U-shaped appendix made out of load bearing brick walls, so I hung a wooden board on some hinges as a door, added some shelves, made a mini-closet. it's also near the front of the house right where the phone lines enter the home so it was the perfect place to put the broadband connection and hence my router lives there and now it's basically my network closet
and now I have realised that it is too fucking small to fit rack hardware so I will never be able to fit any used enterprise gear. it's literally like just 10cm too short on each side aieeeeee

Cloudflare as registrar, good or bad idea?

Gandi are jacking prices up again so I'm moving. Previously had Gandi as a registrar and another service as the actual nameserver, but Cloudflare don't allow this. I was intending to move NS to cloudflare anway, so it's not a problem technically, but does the old advice of keeping registrar and NS separate to avoid one compromise hitting everything no longer apply?

Sidenote: Brave Search's AI told me that if I block DoT and DoH, Google Cast will fallback to unencrypted DNS requests (port 53), which my redirect rule will force through Unbound, resulting in ads getting successfully blocked. Although I'll have to make exceptions for things like Tailscale and ProtonVPN to work. Worth?

I don't really use it, although I could swear the quality of the YouTube video I first cast to test if I still got ads (I did) was better quality than what I got from my laptop. Casting allows you the "premium" bitrate I guess?

Anyway, I was thinking more about visitors and family who might be more inclined to use Cast. If I could block ads from Cast it would be very neat.

Thanks for reminding me.

/hsg/, I'm a rack-less Norwegian. I even considered building my own out of wood at some point. Regardless, there aren't many options here as far as I can tell:
https://prisjakt.no/category.php?catId=3631&k=s415056342

Technically I don't need more than the wrongly linked 4U one in the top link for the StarTech Open Frame 2 Post one. Cheap as shit, but surely enough for my WS-C3580-24P-L switch and a future planned patch panel. And I guess a tray up top to hold my PiKVM, router, and file server? Might get close to the weight limit on that last one though, although it doesn't really need a rack (old U-NAS-NSC-400 case).

I crave for the that old "smart" TV's can be jailbroken and got usable as a cheap home servers, provided we could install on them any OS we want and make use of them instead of ended as ewaste when the manufacturere decides to diosable them because is not propfitable for to update thjem anymore. I mean many cellphones can do that, why not old smart tvs as they (most I daresay) are also android based.

You might end up needing to experiment with extension cords if your single breaker isn't up to snuff for all that future gear. The setup sounds rad though. Most of my networking stuff if 1g/2.5g/10g small scale crap that can't be traditionally racked without a shelf, so as things stand even with plans to buy a new rack for old parts and maybe rack a current system, I wouldn't need anything huge either. But it would be nice to have shit close enough together to make the upgrade from 10g DAC to 25g fiber make sense.
>>105544028
All things equal, a few high capacity drives. You save space, electricity, and allow for future expansion, with the ability to do silly stuff like virtual disks (bigger than the ones you would be able to make with 8TB drives, anyway).
Another thing to consider is that larger capacity HDDs tend to (but not always) be newer. So if there's any likelihood that you're buying used drives (think old stuff from a datacenter that's being phased out or upgraded) be aware of age as a factor.

No, its not exclusive to Proxmox. Proxmox does let you create and manage lxcs, but also lxd(canonicals containerisation software) and incus (its community fork) let you do that. Personally i much prefer linux containers (lxc) to application containers (docker/podman).

Then why bother? The hours you spend trying to remove ads on a proprietary spying device are not worth the minutes of ad time you'd save with your methods. Also quality on youtube is long dead. Trying to revive it this way is a fruitless effort. Looking for alternatives is a better way to sped your time and for your occasional visitors you could just hoop up a laptop connected to your local invidious instance or whatever.

well the power draw is technically a little lower but if you add performance into the equation the thin client does more work per watt so really depends on if you are doing some minimal load all the time or actually need performance. In the latter case the PI would be actually more wasteful than the thin client.

>Plus I like slightly weird, eccentric hardware.
Arm is not really weird nowdays. People even use their phones as servers.
I'd say getting some risc-v board would be a lot cooler.

No it is literally just autism, I wasn't exaggerating.
IIRC it's something like, the inner part was once the front wall, but then the house was extended like two feet forward, and for some reason a portion of the old front wall was kept (because structural reasons or something), so now I've got three sides of a square of structural wall. With space that's just slightly too small for rack sized components.

Here it's +~40โ‚ฌ for the same RAM model. Perhaps kinda justified for the extra hardware. I'd perhaps consider it for a router that doesn't do much else but I haven't looked into CPU perf. My guess it's worse than an A76 in terms of IPC let alone clock speed.

Pacman doesn't just trash your system all the time or anything, and nobody's xorg.conf has probably gotten broken in a decade, but sometimes arch and pacman do still do really retarded shit for no reason.

I also really don't like the config update merging. Gentoo has dispatch-conf which is official and just werks always. Arch just shits out .pacnew files everywhere and you're invited to use one out of a dozen unofficial unmaintained rando scripts or else just trawl through them all manually.

Anon that was a few years ago. Postgres maintains multiple versions for ages - right now the latest version is postgres 17 and meanwhile postgres 13 is still maintained until the end of this year.
The point is that it shouldn't just suddenly break on a routine system update. If I know my database is reaching EOL, or if I want to be on the latest version just for good measure, I can update on my own time. But in the meantime I should be able to update all my system packages without worrying about my database.
Or if you're REALLY going to force upgrade to an incompatible package, either you need a smart system to auto-migrate (still at terrible idea), or at least clearly and loudly tell the user what's happening. Not as some log line somewhere among the 80 package update messages way back in your terminal scrollback, but as an explicit action item summary shown at the end and ideally even queryable by the user afterwards.
This is actually not dissimilar to my complaint about updated configs (not telling the user what needs to be done and giving them a convenient way to do it). And actually gentoo again has that solved, with eselect news providing a convenient channel to notify users of major breaking changes and any actions or migrations required from their end - so you can usually do emerge world updates without any fear, and then at the end it prominently tells you "there are X unread news items" (usually only one, if at all, user-affecting breakages are rare after all) and then you can always go back and check what needs to be done.

The more I think about it - Gentoo on a server would unironically work well.

That completely depends on the usage. They each have tradeoffs.
A VPS requires less effort to maintain and administrate. It also usually comes with a static public IP. And it's separate from your home network so being lax with security will have a much smaller impact.
But the downside is that a cheap VPS will usually have absolutely anemic performance, like 1-2 CPU cores, 1-4GB of memory, and <100 gigs of storage. For some things that's completely fine and then a VPS might be a perfectly suitable choice, but obviously it limits the applications a lot. And you can also rent much more powerful servers, even dedicated servers, but the costs grow very very quickly.
Another downside is that eaiser to maintain has the flipside of less control, so if you want some specific configuration, or if you're doing it as a hobby and want to build a homelab, a VPS is obviously the wrong choice.
And the fact that it's isolated from your home network can also be inconvenient if you want to run stuff at home, as you need to set up tunelling or remote access for everything.

I have both - I've got a couple of VPSs for things that don't require a lot of resources and which need a static IP and don't need to be on my home network. Meanwhile at home I've got stuff which I mainly use at home, like file server, home assistant, etc.

LXC is just a unix filesystem with symlinks for the necessary hardware stuff. I can spinup a new container from a template in seconds and install software the classic way, also customize it however I want without it shitting the bed.

Well for sharing files locally to your tablet you can use kdeconnect.
The problem with nextcloud is you'll need a user account for each person logging in or a shared account they'll all use to access files you store there. You can host it at home on your pc if you don't care about uptime but it means you gotta worry about dynamic dns, opening a port on your router, and deal with someone complaining your server is down when you're away from home and can't boot your pc.
You could pay monthly for a VPS, then all you have to worry about is user management. There's even providers that have nextcloud dedicated VPSs available so you don't even have to set it up yourself.

Originally my only real concern was being able to mount generous amounts of sound dampening panels in there and use low RPM fans because I had to keep the rack in my office back then.

What are you using? is it something like a daisychained DAS or something different? What hardware? Quite envious apart from the power cost to run.

>3x4U GPU servers I upgrade whenever the used GPU market goes down in price significantly like a few years back when you could get 1080Ti's for basically nothing used

>I got myself a tape library a while ago to manage offsite backups

Which library are you using? I take it you're using LTO tape - if so how many drives do you have and which generation of LTO are you using?

>2x1U opnsense hosts for redundancy, the rest is mostly random old hosts slapped into whatever case I could get my hands on

Anything of note? I still have my first server (a short depth supermicro like pic related) which is so old it doesn't even have PCIE. It currently just spends its days archiving youtube channels with YT-DLP. Do you have anything like that?

>Quite envious apart from the power cost to run.
If I wasn't lucky enough to have a house with solar I probably wouldn't be running this stuff. The idle draw isn't even that bad all things considered but the possible peak draw is something else.
>is it something like a daisychained DAS or something different?
Two are Ryzen 5950X (completely overkill I know but I got them cheap on clearance from a local vendor) with ASUS X570 workstation boards because they have something like IPMI and more importantly x8x8x8 PCIe lane config for SATA/SAS controllers and network cards, two are 24C 7003 EPYCs simultaneously hosting a bunch of VMs. They are just hooked up to a Cisco switch via 10G SFP+ NICs. When I finally upgrade the pools I will probably add some SSDs and 40G NICs but they're all essentially independent pools serving different stuff.
>What do you use them for? Gaming? AI?
AI, I got into ML ~15 years ago. Then I got really lucky during covid and managed to grab a few dual port 100G Mellanox NICs due to a vendors fuck up that are now interconnecting the GPU nodes and I'll definitely add a 1/2U NVMe storage server at some point dedicated to just the GPU servers. But U.2/U.3 SSDs are a bit expensive even to me so I'll wait until I get something refurbished or from a business closure most likely, most stuff (network gear and HDDs excluded) is refurbished or used still expensive but nowhere near what I'd have to pay for everything new.
>Which library are you using?
A refurbished HPE MSL3040 with a 40 tapes max LTO-9 drive. As I said when you pass 100-200TB storage it becomes inevitable. Expensive even refurbished but my tech degeneracy is fuelled by crypto gambling degeneracy kek
>Anything of note?
Not really just the usual, a bunch of databases, jellyfin, lanraragi, obviously local DNS due to opnsense, one or two webservers, a bunch of home automation stuff but nothing I'd say is really out of the ordinary. The more exotic stuff I covered above.

Its nice. It solves 99% of all issues that SFTP has by mounting a remote directory on the local system. Meaning all applications can read and write to the NAS as if it were normal storage on the local system. With FTP and similar protocols only programs that go out of their way to support it can actually use it. You can imagine it as a compatibility layer between SFTP and your computer. It also has the befit of programs that would do retarded shit like caching the entirety of the NAS (ahem ahem KDE) not doing this as it is again treated as a normal file system.
The 1% of issues is related to programs that expect full file system control and more advanced options not being able to use them i think. I cannot 100% confirm that this whats happening but given that steam has issues locking files and Kdiskmark having similar trouble that this is the case.
This is still a billion times better than FTP or whatever 'cloud' stuff you install like nextcloud.
Literately the only reason you would not prefer it to the alternatives is if your clients OS cannot run it. Otherwise it needs no setup on the server side besides maybe jailing the account you want to use for NAS to a particular folder.
Runs over the same ssh stuff your remote shells use.

SSHFS uses SFTP, not to mention the extra encryption overhead.
It's better to use NFS.

The worst part about it is how Sonarr uses TVDB as their metadata source and they insist on using localised names for anime like "A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof" instead of "Ninja to Koroshiya no Futarigurashi", for example.

if your development environment is big enough for you to need a NAS you are doing something wrong in the first place.
But anyways feel free to name a better alternative to make your NAS behave with your programs.
Also just tested some non steam vidya and it works so i don't know what you mean by "reading and writing at the same time". Clearly werks for me.

>>105562913
>SSHFS uses SFTP
Which is why i told you to imagine it as a compatibility layer.
>extra encryption overhead
For some its good to have encryption for some its bad. Its a price you have to pay but considering it works on every server that has ssh with no configs i think its fine.

>It's better to use NFS.
I still have to test it but so far SSHFS just worked. I just wanted to show anon that there are simper solutions than installing nextcloud. Why even have a webui of you can just ssh into your server.

>What now?
Some programs like to cache shit that doesn't need to be. When i search for files and their contents in particular it would save them in /tmp and try to crash my system by filing up my RAM when i use bare SFTP. When i do the same on SSHFS it doesn't cache anything which results in faster and more responsive speeds actually, and in my RAM not being raped by it attempting to read files.
Just goes to show how 'native' it seems to the system. Not saying that FTP and HTTP are useless but SSHFS just feels more comfortable to me and improves compatibility immensely in my daily usage.

And again considering how easy its to use and what it brings to the table it might be worth a switch from normal SFTP to it.

>When i search for files and their contents in particular it would save them in /tmp and try to crash my system by filing up my RAM when i use bare SFTP
That's default SFTP and not KDE fault.
SSHFS uses FUSE which is why it's not "caching".
And it shouldn't eat up your ram, at most it should be few MBs at most.
>And again considering how easy its to use and what it brings to the table it might be worth a switch from normal SFTP to it.
I'd argue FTP is far easier and more compatible than SSHFS across various platforms.

unless you got a fully set up kerberos domain, I don't really agree.
defaults of NFS3 are junk.
SMB3 (Samba or Winshit) with NTLMSSP at least has mutual authentication and encryption baked in. sadly NFS4 never got a convenience like this for some reason.

Yeah the speed difference is undeniable. But most stuff my server is served not as a NAS but in a different way. I need to read files quite often but i really never noticed any speed difference between it and my local SSD.
>That's default SFTP and not KDE fault.
Again its to show that even it will treat it as a local drive. Dolphin can absolutely do networking but it causes issues for me and with it being mounted its all fixed.
>SSHFS uses FUSE which is why it's not "caching".
>And it shouldn't eat up your ram, at most it should be few MBs at most.
It is quite literately saving all files it reads through in /tmp when you search through contents. This is unacceptable for me and while i was searching for ways to have it mounted SSHFS is the first one that popped up and it just works.

>I'd argue FTP is far easier and more compatible than SSHFS across various platforms.
i guess more platforms support FTP but on the ones that do, you are probably using one of them, its no harder than opening a secure shell to your server. You can have it autorun and never notice it doing it.
Not saying that it obsoletes FTP or any other protocol but for me there is no reason to use FTP over it. Well SSHFS uses SFTP as its basis but abstracts it in a way that make my programs work much better.
If i ever decide i want to any high load tasks from my PC to my Server i will check out NFS. I actually did that already but while i was doing it SSHFS came on my radar and i did not see the reason so far to use anything else.

Tailscale is a company (cloudjew) that manages your wireguard keys for you.
FYI - if you have an unusual domain on your email that they don't recognize as a shared email host, anyone else on that email provider can join your tailnet. Their "solution" was to turn ON approvals for new tailnets, and "eventually" mark all email providers as shared/not shared while they work on proper auth

Hmm. They seem to be quite a bit more expensive here (UK, looking at ebay). I don't really need the 10G but it might be a nice to have - what if I decide to build a NAS one day. I can see there's a 12PD-S model with the same 10G uplinks too, but there's very few listings for either model and the 1G one doesn't even seem to be that much cheaper.
The PoE budget is impressive but ruckus's 124W should actually be fine for my needs. If I could get the 12PD model for 10G AND double the PoE for less than triple the price of the ruckus, I would, but that doesn't seem to be possible here. I could literally get two ruckuses for less than that, for a 250W power budget, and 24 ports including four 10G ones.

Hey guys, for a long time I've been wanting to learn how to create/manage SQL databases and I was wanting some advice. I run a Proxmox server with TrueNAS Core internally installed with the hard drives passed through. For pretty much everything I use that requires external storage (i.e Jellyfin, Qbittorrent), I went the route of making independent datasets, then created NFS shares afterwards. This method for mass media has been mostly perfect, but I've been told NFS is frowned upon for SQL databases out of it's issues with file locking, which makes sense I've had this issue inside Jellyfin in the past.

If that's the case, what do you think is the most efficient way of hosting a SQL database with Proxmox and TrueNAS Core being passed through? All of the ideas I have in mind seem to have their own issues. My other ideas included making an iscsi share inside trueNAS, but that makes me worry about scalability since from what I understand you have to manually specify the drives and partition space. The next idea was to just install sql directly from the TrueNAS plugins section, but apparently that is extremely outdated and not recommended.

I feel like this issue has been giving me trivial results online out of the plentiful ways of doing this, so I figured I might as well ask. It seems like a common issue and I'm not looking up the correct terms.

In TrueNAS, what kind of performance difference would there be between the two setups?
A) 3x12TB RAIDZ1
B) 2x24TB Mirror

Would the mirror likely outperform the Z1 due to no parity shit or would the drive quantity with 3 drives make up for it? Mainly for media storage and single user access, IOPS not really crucial.

My main usecase for it is relatively simple home network stuff, I could do with a tplink easysmart switch even but hey if I get an L3 switch I'll be able to do inter-vlan routing directly in it. That's about all I need.
Learning is cool, I doubt I'd ever use any of these skills but it's still cool. What can the cisco do that the ruckus can't? They're both enterprise L3 switches, surely it can't be that bad?

>american ebay
Yeah, issue is they're still heavy and transatlantic shipping sucks fucking balls. It's all air mail and I'd pay another like $150 or so just for postage.
There is one auction that's at ยฃ150 currently but it's already got 2 bidders and two days left, so I'm not optimistic. (Meanwhile the ruckus has an auction at ยฃ100 with zero bidders so far, and I was planning on snagging it by friday.) I can certainly afford even ยฃ200 if need be, but at that point it's just hard to justify compared to just spending ยฃ50 on a tplink with the most basic L2 shit I need and being done with it.
>isr1k devices
I honestly have no idea about the enterprise market except what I've been able to see in the past few days, if you have any recommendations which seem to have reasonable prices in bongland I'm all ears.

you want small form factor low power utilization with PoE out?

the cisco switch can support BGP and layer 3 dynamic routing protocols and you can do VRFs/VRF lite. it also does advanced layer 2 shit like private vlans, better forwarding rate, etc. rukus is "layer 3 lite" and doesnt do much without a license installed from my research. i think you cant even enable OSPF unless you physically install a license on the device. you'd have a managed VLANing device tops without it. cisco compact switch needs no license for advanced features.

The cisco datasheet says
>IP Base (IP Services with RTU License)
>he 3560-CX switches can be upgraded to use the IP Services version of IOS Software with a Right-To-Use (RTU) License. The IP Base and IP Services feature set on Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX switches provides baseline enterprise services in addition to all LAN Base features. They support Layer 3 networking features, including support for routed access, Cisco TrustSec, Media Access Control security (MACsec), and other advanced network services. The IP Services feature set provides full Layer 3 routing capabilities with Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Enhanced Internal Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Policy-Based Routing (PBR), Multicast Routing, and Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) Lite.
The ruckus apparently also a pirate license you can easily install in the forum thread that was linked last thread: https://fohdeesha.com/docs/7xxx.html
Do you know of anything similar for the cisco? BGP and VRF and stuff seem locked behind the license.

That said the ruckus doesn't actually support BGP or VRF, you're right. Some of them do but apparently not the 7150 series for some reason. OSPF is definitely there (with the freely unlockable license).
But in what contexts would a home lab even need BGP? Or VRF for that matter. Maybe a retarded question, but can you even use BGP when you only have one switch?

you just input two commands and everything is enabled, no license install or pirating needed. doesn't even complain at you.

i use BGP on a single router at my parents house to hard isolate network segments. the point is to host a presence there without letting my dadโ€™s IoT landfill touch anything. not just ACLs, but full routing separation. no path exists between segments.
i also use a DMZ VRF with PBR to steer traffic in and out of a cloud relay VPS i have. i have probably the safest public service exposure a homelab can have because of it. if any of my public services get compromised there is NO lateral movement that can take place. complete dead end.

i will say that after my large redesign and segmentation experiment that if you have a properly segmented underlay in your homelab you can do large scale experiments without adversely affecting the entire environment.

That all sounds very fun. I haven't really considered it but it might be worth having the option just to play around.

Yeah this is good advice, however 3x12TB is a bit cheaper.
I might still go 24TBs because as you say not fitting more is a problem for future me and I already have some 24TBs outside of the NAS that might some day wind up being put into it once I shuffle enough data around to free them up.

Retard here. What are my options/things I should look into if I wanted to give a real crack at a 3 node cluster of some kind? Not just 3 devices I'm syncing files to but having services on some sort of fail-over mechanism where if one of the machines dies, the service keeps running? I know bash and debian/ubuntu.
Sorry if this seems like a basic question but I have no idea where to start.

Your 3600 would work fine. Though because it's not an apu you're going to have to use another gpu to set up the system, which can cause issues with network interfaces renaming themselves when you remove it. If you have the space and uxpec you will expand your drives in the future I would get a fractal d7. It's a high quality case and is just a black box so it can get pushed into a corner, or under a desk nicely. You can even get versions with a solid side pannel. The important part is that it supports 10 hdd's nicely in the back, so you can do 3 wide raidz1 vdevs with your current 6 drives, then have space to add one more vdev, plus a hot spare. I would use proxmox, even if you aren't intending to have a bunch of services. The web interface is nice and acts as a pseudo ipmi for the system you run as a vm. You could do truenas, but it's not as versitile, and you can always just run truenas under proxmox.

An electrician can do that easily, just remind them that the network cables need to run full length and they can't cut and extend at will like they do with electrical cables. My dad did all the electrical and network wiring for my place and he didn't calculate the initial length well enough for all the corners and turns so there were some unconventional parts where I had to put some 3 inch cat 6 cable between two ports to bridge them. Not very sightly but it works.

They need to be specifically licensed for data cabling. Beyond that I wouldn't trust any random sparky with data cabling. They can do too many things to fuck it up. Over tensioning the cable, exceeding the bend radius, putting it too close to sources of interference etc. Given the cost of running cables I want the full value of a wired connection, not a degraded one.

That being said I would have liked to have more storage, maybe with some redundancy.

Is there any practical way to make several-disks-with-some-level-of-redundancy work through a single USB port?

Vast majority of FOSS developers aren't experts in low level x86 firmware development.
Majority of that work happens at AMI, Phoenix, etc in coordination with the hardware vendors.

The BIOS in x86 devices control ALOT of shit and is exceedingly complex compared to the average ARM device where the kernel is expected to do most of the work defining what a device is.

This is understandable, but can't we all create a fund for the handful of devs who are actually capable?

Obviously it's not possible to support every single device out there, but atleast 1 MiniPC per generation.

Someone's already done this for 10th gen i7: https://puri.sm/products/librem-mini/ but these are twice as expensive as the normie-edition of MiniPCs in the market.

The Coreboot developers themselves are available for consultations, so perhaps it's not unreasonable to think that with the right device, we can sponsor a developer to do the required work to do the porting.

IMO that's expensive for an N150. For 1/3rd more (about $300) you can get a proper 8-core, 16-thread ryzen 5000 one. Even with 32GB RAM for like $20 extra.
I looked into budget tiny boxes for a while and honestly these N150 boxes are like maybe twice as powerful as a raspberri pi while being 3-4 times as expensive. And again it's about half as powerful at single core and gets absolutely destroyed at multicore than the AMD option. They only make sense for very specific usecases where you NEED more than a pi but CANNOT afford more than $200, and even then a used thin client is probably going to be better in most cases imho.

I recently got this one myself by the way https://www.bee-link.com/products/beelink-eqr5?variant=46994723406066. Nice little machine with more than enough cores and memory to do most miscellaneous home server tasks, only really limited by storage so you can't use it as a proper NAS box. Though if you know you only need something super weak then it's definitely overkill.

Honestly really great counter-rec
I didn't do my due diligence while browsing by featured so I saw all the hella expensive ones first. Even if it's kinda overkill it would be kinda odd for me to get the tiny NAS box when I plan on setting up a proper one later this or next year, I'll at least be able to use this one for other stuff once that happens
If I were to pick this up, would it be fine to use the second storage slot for NAS or would I wanna plug something like this ugreen enclosure into the front usb c port?

Problem is I live in Sweden, so anything outside of the EU gets pricey immediately.

Sure, no reason not to.
Original anon here and I personally feel like that is really overkill, but at the same time if you plan on building something proper later on down the line then at least that Beelink will still be useful as an actual computer unlike one of the N100 ones.
It's up to you I guess.

If you're the anon looking for a budget fileserver who doesn't need more than 500GB, then I'd say get 2x 1TB SSDs, and use btrfs raid1 mirror on them. Fags will screech that it's not a real backup but it'll give you enough safety for most things except manually doing rm -rf, so don't do that, BUT you can also learn to use btrfs snapshots which should help even against that.
At your storage sizes getting USB HDDs is probably not worth it.

Or if you want to go cheaper, you can definitely use USB HDDs but at that point you might as well plug them into a pi. It's going to be a super nigger rigged fileserver but it'll work. If you really don't need more now and are planning to replace it with a proper build later anyway, then might as well go for the cheap-ass option for now.

That makes sense, I think. I mean I get the gist of it but where are you recommending I put the SSDs? In the linked one or in a different one?

The SSDs would be for a beelink or similar mini-pc that has two M.2 slots. The ryzen one definitely does, I think the N150 one might have them too.

nta but the nvme will probably be bottlenecked by the network anyways so just put it wherever.
RAID isn't recommended on USB and if you're gonna put it inside the beelink you'll probably be using one of the slots for the OS, so no RAID there either, unless you're running the OS from a thumbdrive I guess.

Gotcha gotcha ty for the clarification
If the n150 one you mentioned is the little box I linked earlier that guy has 6 slots
>>105572631
Oh good note
I dunno how well RAID would be supported on a boot drive. Maybe I could set up some sort of disk partition though?
