Can things like that normally be done in most window managers or DEs? When I looked it seemed like the standard way to get a terminal as the desktop was to set the window as always fullscreen and below other windows.

Arch + Cinnamon chad coming through

I find the arch teams packaging of cinnamon to be tasteful. Only downside is it doesn't come with mint icons or themes which look superior or ubuntu fonts. The install is very minimal and only comes with the absolute bare vanilla essentials.

IDK I've tried every single desktop environment and pretty much all notable window managers.
gnome,KDE, hyprland, xfce, i3/sway, xmonad, awesome, dwm, openbox,

I just keep coming back to fucking cinnamon though. I find cinnamon to be the closest to old windows 7 and just werks werks I havent had any problems for over a year so I keep using it.

They are doing things pragmatic like not defaulting to wayland and I like that. Their whole ethos of being anti modern gnome anti snap is why I like the mint team developing cinnamon.

I still think mint is too bloated for my taste so I use arch but Its a good OS nonetheless

You can have thumbnail only in the tab switcher
You can adjust the delay to 0 milliseconds instant switch for alt tab switching WITHOUT touching the animation settings unlike KDE.
You can easily assign keybindings with no fuss in the keyboard settings.

The keybindings for screenshot are dead simple, printscrn to take full, shift print to take rectangle and alt shift print to take window screen.

I feel you anon, Cinnamon does it all for me too - no uberfeaturing, ready to pimp up by simply going through the Mint repo and EASY to modify. the only reason I use Debian Testing is because Stable delivers Cinnamon 5.blabhalbah and there are less possibilities to - especially - handle Menu shit. but lss (long story short): I love it too
