Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources.

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice on bare metal and run your previous OS in a Virtual Machine.
2) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.
4) Be a retard and attempt to force single system OSs into a dual boot environment, breaking everything.

Resources: Please spend at least a minute to check a web search engine with your question.
Many free software projects have active mailing lists.

What some practical uses for Rocky (redhat) Linux at home? I'm hoping to one day become a sysadmin. I have a Rocky vm setup and have installed a web server which I can access via a GUI on my local network. However, this is more of me accessing and editing the front-end via my browser, and not learning linux at all. I already have a file and media server running Windows and would like to keep those if possible. Any recommendations for "fun"/practical ways to learn? If I'm just reading and entering endless commands it loses me a bit.

First of all, stop. Lubuntu uses LXQt, which actually uses more system resources in [current year] than Xfce, cause Qt and Plasma are now basically the same thing.
Second of all, an i3 with 4GB of RAM is enough to run any Linux DE you like smoothly.
Third, you're looking for Remmina.

well i was in a rush being on a phone call, and it was asking to sign in. maybe i missed something because they changed the UI since i last tried it, but rustdesk did the job. i tend to prefer foss anyway so even if teamviewer does still work without an account, i'd still keep using rustdesk
i believe you can self-host the server portion as well

i didn't sign in. i rarely use it. i don't use it personally and only do use it on the rare occasion like if a friends' kid wants help with something that can't wait, i get them to run teamviewer quick support, but this time when installing teamviewer i was hit with a login prompt. i didn't look into it because i was on a call so i quickly found something else to use
rustdesk works much the same as teamviewer in that it provides a session id/pass to access someone's computer
also note that i'm not bringing this up because it uses rust, i'm neutral on that front, don't care if it does or doesn't use rust

yes thats only when you want to set it up.
ssh will let you login as a user and then do whatever you want with it. reboot it, install software, open a graphical interface, control the mouse, open and edit files in the terminal with vi or nano, download/upload files.
you setup a key that identifies your machine and says to his machine "this machine can connect whenever it wants"

oh and for personal use i do just use SSH, but that requires a bit of setup, an open port, and without additional software like x11vnc, is just a text shell
not really equivalent to teamviewer, but makes more sense for accessing computers you own since it doesn't require input from the other computer, doesn't require a GUI, and easily facilitates things like scripting, port tunnelling, etc

I don't really think there are any in your case. You can always try and replicate the Windows Server configs in Linux. That would be a start.
You'll need a lot more than that to be a sysadmin though. Sysadmins don't typically do fun stuff. What you need to do if you really want to learn Linux is put up a website with a firewall, a DNS, a syslog server, an OpenVPN server, etc. Stuff that you may not use at home but that will teach you useful things.
And of course, you will need to learn Windows Server too if you actually want a job.

But why dress like that when you look awful in it? If you're going to be unconventional and break the rules, why not wear something actually cool, like an armor set or costume or a funny t-shirt like pic rel? That person doesn't need confidence to wear that because all his friends agree with him politically and tell him what he wants to hear anyway. If he wore something truly unconventional that would be a different story, but dressing like a faggot is something that loads of people do, meaning you can confide in your carefully selected group of friends who also dress like you. Imagine if he went around dressed up like a medieval peasant. He would be the only person in a 10000 km radius to do so and not only would it be interesting and cool as fuck, but none of his friends would be doing it.

What I'm currently doing is building an all-in-one server/NAS/router/hypervisor thing using RHEL as a base. You can make it as simple or complex as you want, but in my case I'm looking to deal with:
>baking custom RHEL ISOs
>bootstrapping the OS from minimal sets of packages using dnf --installroot
>root on ZFS
>managing ZFS volumes via cli, setting up weekly cron scrubs, snapshots and remote backups
>PPPoE broadband connection, NAT via firewalld/iptables
>DHCP server, recursive DNS server
>chat server
>media streaming server

tl;dr - start lurking >>>/g/hsg if you're looking for some ideas. Additionally I'd recommend using it as a desktop if you can, it'll give you basic familiarity with the basic commands and packages and whatnot.

well the idea is just to have it between machines that don't have fixed ips
like with syncthing it doesn't matter if machines are on a dynamic ip, static ip, behind a nat, ethernet or wifi, friends' place, public wifi, phone hotspot, whatever. it uses a public peer discovery services (optionally self-hostable) which all peers can query to find out the current ip of other peers. the result being that once you've paired computers using pubkeys you just don't need to think about ips at all, it always just works

Every time (all two of them over six years lol) someone's disagreed with me when I referred to Linux as a kernel instead of an operating system I've responded with 'Go install "The Linux Operating System" and tell me how that goes' and it's worked so far. I'm scared that one day someone's going to ask me what a kernel is and I'll have to reveal that I have no fucking idea.

I tried Linux for the first time today, I chose OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, KDE Wayland based on my research of what I wanted, used it live from a external ssd to test things first. Couple of issues I had:

>Xbox one S controller wouldn't work, not even wired. Spent most of my time trying to fix this. Would probably have better luck with bluetooth but I don't have a dongle right now.
>Audio crackling when changing the volume to fast, like when I use my keyboard's volume knob.
>Fucked up font size and spacing on some websites (Firefox, probably an easy fix so I didn't bother atm)

Which of these issues do you anons think comes from me running from a live external ssd instead of installing? Which comes from the distro and which comes from something else?
Other than that, everything else worked right away which kinda surprised me. Now I didn't finish installing everything, I still needed to set up OBS and CoreCrtl but I haven't settled on OpenSUSE yet, maybe these problems come from it so I going to try another.

so you're using a proprietary dongle for your xbox controller? afaik that dongle is proprietary and it only works through some reverse engineered driver, unlike later xbone bluetooth gamepads or the ones from the 360
I've actually briefly owned one, but there was no driver at all back then

not a fan of opensuse but I don't think you will have any issues booting from usb regardless, it's going to be a bit slower ofc but usb3 onward should be fine
