Google discontinued AOSP.
The only option now is Linux phone which can only play audio/video player at best.
It's fucking over.

literally just start a new fucking ecosystem, burn fdroid to the ground and start a new one that is less gay and autismo

I think also issuing an open source license stating your code will be open forever, then reniggering on that after many companies have built their platforms on that contract is not only wrong but possibly illegal atleast civilly.

This will be challenged in EU courts. You can't create a whole platform off the back of open source efforts and then reneg on that because of a restructuring.

They're doing this because of the EU but the EU will challenge this too.

You must be joking. Apple harvests more user data than anyone. It's anonymized, but thanks to their ecosystem being so self-contained, the only thing your profile doesn't have is your name. Which is useless.
If you really believe Apple is a privacy company, I'm afraid I have to tell you you drank the coolaid.

Software licenses only affect the licensed software unless there's a specific clause extending it to derivatives. There is nothing requiring Google to develop Android forever, this is just like if they dropped Android development entirely and started making their own closed-source skin just like every hardware manufacturer.

>if they stop publishing AOSP code
Android 16 was literally pushed as AOSP code. The google device section doesn't have an update for android 16, that's it.
In fact the mass majority of devices in the AOSP device code tree didn't get android 16 updates, most of them are still on <v10. Why the fuck are there asus and moto device trees with Android 5.1 still in the official AOSP code tree?
Device specific support should not be in the AOSP source code. It should be sources to build a GSI only and Google should make a separate repo for patches to their devices, as should all other manufacturers that want source available OS.

you cant sideload software on iOS. You still have to upload the app to the appstore and get it signed by apple, but you can now put an appstore link on your own website to start the appstore download. It basicaly just allows you to distribute unlisted apps via the appstore. You absolutely can NOT compile and run your own software on an iphone.

That's what's happening. GrapheneOS and Calyx relied heavily on the pixel builds they apply their own patches to so they'll have to figure out a new way to patch but this doesn't effect the rest of AOSP or any other device except pixels running these custom roms.
I have no idea why google did this but leave it to nu-/g/ to make a mountain out of a molehill.

they have been closing sourcing android for well over a decade, shitloads of crap that used to be part of aosp got replaced with google's proprietary crap, it would be abnormal if google changed course instead of continuing closing android up to killing off aosp

the google botnet stuff has been considered a separate thing from AOSP for a long time now, pivoting to android being fully nonfree is in fact a huge pivot. but like anon said there's no actual evidence they're doing this
what's far more likely is that google is just trying to be subtler about the dev process to avoid scrutiny since they fired all of the competent people and hired a bunch of jeets and women

Braxman sells cheapo off the shelf chinese phones with preloaded LineageOS and microG for double the original price.
He claims that it's more secure than GrapheneOS and Pixels because you don't have to unlock the bootloader since his "super secure and private" Android fork is installed by default.
No secure chip is present on these phones, no security features besides the AOSP ones are present, no hardening is done at either the software and firmware level.

replying to myself but i'd also like to elaborate that between google play integrity API which make alot of apps un-usable if you don't pass strong integrity, and googles recent decision to "streamline" androids development by focusing their development efforts on the internal branch (see https://www.androidauthority.com/google-android-development-aosp-3538503/) things haven't been looking too great for custom ROMS. but ASOP is not "discontinued", atleast not yet.

Kernel CVEs happen all the time, including privilege escalation.
An outdated Android would be trivial to root just by using a public CVE.
The same is true for iOS, but it's not open source so the vulnerabilities are not publicly posted.
It just means you have to do more work to find the exploits, which is why >>105566216 is correct.
BlackHats will hoard the vulnerabilities and nobody is putting time/money/effort into finding them for consumer benefit.
