Old thinkpas can cost just as much as newish (used)
I sold my T601 (fully upgraded with IPS LED screen, 8GB RAM, modern wifi etc) for more than enough money to buy T480 (1080p, no custom upgrades) or early X1 series (4K screen, 32GB ram)

Look at you, you can upgrade your ram whenever you want.
Your PCB is black.
You can even upgrade your battery since the Gen 6 has a 57Wh battery that you could swap in.
Down the road if you feel like, you can even swap in the 12 core Ryzen 9 HX 370 (890M GPU) from the Gen 6 into your chassis.
You have a guaranteed 5MP webcam.
You have a great ThinkPad, Coreboot is for trannies.

I even asked in here whether my T450's keyboard is acting up because only certain keys are not working and not an entire half.

If by modern you mean new, then none of them. It's over. The question isn't if, but how much you want to cuck on keyboard feel.

Every few years they reduce the key travel to make them thinner but they try and make up for it by making them snappier. Shooting from the hip, people have complained most recently about the keyboard in the T14G3, so you might want to stick with the T14G2 for the most recent cuckboard that at least isn't as bad as the newer ones. X1 Carbon and X series usually get the thinner keyboards a model or two ahead of the T series, if not earlier.

X1 Yoga line is not inherently worse than X1 Carbon or T14s lines. Do you consider soldered ram and slim keyboard decent?
Personally I don't mind either, on the contrary the tactile click on modern keyboards feels better than mushy squish on T440 ~ T480 gens. Still way worse than classic T61 though.

Honestly IDK what is even available these days, haven't shopped for a laptop for more than a decade. I don't even know if slotted RAM is even available. Obviously, having upgrade options would be great, even though alegedly soldering saves up some battery life.
Not sure what you mean by a slim keyboard, like layout-wise or particularly shallow ones with no key travel?

LPDDRX is very different from normal DDR and while more power efficient it can't be slotted in normal SODIMM slots. Recently there's LP-CUDIMM sockets trying to solve it, and normal DDR trying to improve its efficiency.

Interesting, didn't know this. Still, there's probably reasons why some laptops prefer to have it soldered. The ones I look into are usually 13" or even smaller, maybe the form factor is a restriction there.
>particularly shallow ones with no key travel
yeah, not a fan if something is so shallow that it doesn't even have some scissor mechanism. I'm ok with current macbook pro keyboards, although they're nothing to write home about, but the thinkpad keyboards from circa 2012 are some of the best keyboards I have ever used.

Huffing ultra heavy copium for LPCAMM2 to catch on. If it does, it'll mean that we'll get:
>upgradeable RAM
>at low power draw
>with extra mobo space
>potentially bringing back slots for both WLAN and WWAN on one board
Looking at my L14 G5's mobo it's clear that there wasn't much space to shove in another M.2 slot for the WLAN module so they just soldered it, while the two SODIMM slots take up most of the real estate. It's not even about the thickness anymore, Lenovo dialed it back just right. The sooner we get LPCAMM2 to supersede SODIMM the sooner we'll get the possibility for some really solid ChinkPads to be made.

Even my T420 blows it out of the water. The only thing marginally worse is the speakers in my X230 but that's to be expected. That said my P50 is much better but it's too big for portability. I like buying from Lenovo because my parts always arrive in exactly 2 days.

Unfortunately my power button and IO board won't come in until Tuesday, and they were expensive, even from a third party eBay seller.

>>105600733
Sure, but that still doesn't stop you from having a switch somewhere on the mobo that will power it on too, as the reset button doesn't seem to power on the unit on the modern ThinkPads anymore.
The power button and IO board with all it's cables cost half of what the motherboard cost me, and that was the best deal I could find, it would have cost $40 more getting it from Lenovo.

the reason i got it is that i need to test some things here and now instead of cloud gpu usage. wake me when using a cloud gpu for resource usage is as simple as connecting via ssh. but an example i read was terrible in terms of time spent of getting any result you want. so there is a play area between one-time usages and setting local-cloud pipelines.
is 8gb still the bare minimum to mess around with huge llms or image generation? or has the average reqs been raised?

thoughts on AMD powered ThinkPads?
I have an A485 but sometimes the AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 2500U is too much of a bottleneck for development and processing of lots of data, even with 32GB RAM
nowadays all CPUs are soldered directly to the motherboard making it very hard to replace it
and still I'd be limited to the Zen architecture, meaning that even if I wanted to remove and solder a new CPU the best I would get that is architecture-compatible is the Ryzen 7 PRO 2700U which is... not that much of an upgrade

>>105611515
It's about both. SODIMM's force the laptops to be thicker and limit the amount of real estate on the motherboard. SODIMM's also are getting too outdated for the speeds DDR5 is reaching. This ends up forcing manufacturers to solder the RAM not out of greed, but out of necessity. LPCAMM2 solves all those issues, meaning manufacturers can still give us modular RAM and they can make their shit super thin. It's a win-win if LPCAMM2 gets utilized to it's fullest potential.

Holy shit you’re not even joking.
Yeah this was dumb as hell. You could’ve diy’d this for half the cost. A cleanish higher end T420 plus that panel and the edp adapter…
This is the kind of mod you do when you’re just trying to fuck around, do it because you can. Not because it’s worth doing, a 14” 1440p panel is questionably usable? Nothing this machine is capable of will do well in 1440p. I guess it’ll look good for 1440p video playback but then it’s a 14” display, it won’t really be that noticeable over 1080p.
And they did nothing else to it mod wise to really make it worth that kind of money. A $400+ T420 in my eyes needs to have all the off the shelf basic mods done do it, usb type c power is a $20 mod, a processor with hd4000 is kind of just expected at this price, not something you should add yourself.

If this is disposable money for you, sure. But you could’ve gotten a more fleshed out modded T420 for less money. This is basically just overpaying for a situationally useful 1440p display.
This tanks your battery life too.

Is that only the latest CPUs that have such performance? I'd love to upgrade from my A285 but it's hard to justify dropping AU$2-3k on a piece of hardware.

Not really, my T14 Gen 1 runs Skyrim and GTA5. I don't really play that many games on it though. I mostly use it to play emulators at friends houses and to dick around in Linux. I kind of wish I would've waited a bit for one of the newer ones to be about $300 though. It's not that substantial of an upgrade from my old T495, all things considered.

No, 680m, 780m GPU on Ryzen 7 models in: G3/G4 T14, T14s, X13s.
T14 G3 is almost 3 years old, I think.
680m in the T14 is good for about 25-30 fps on maxed settings in 1200p in Tomb Raider, GTA5 and Far Cry 5, probably medium to high settings in Cyberpunk.

In my area T420 with those specs, 1440p panel and upgrade kit would cost you more than that (and nobody is selling assembled units), but imo second gen intel is not worth it no matter how good the screen and keyboard are.
For reference $450 got me this X1 Titanium with i7-1180G and that's still considered overpriced.

For Intel the only major turning point was Xe starting with 11th gen, everything before is shit, everything after is all the same. Coincidentally 11th gen is the last one without cuck cores, AND the first to get 16:10 screen (though only on X1 series, not on T14)
For AMD every Ryzen gen got incrementally better GPU, but the most notable is switch from VEGA to RDNA on 6*** series. But RDNA actually has worse power efficiency, especially idle, so you get 150% performance at ~66% battery life of 5*** APUs

What should I get from a choice of
>T14 G2 Ryzen 5 5650u, 16GB
>T14s G2 Ryzen 7 5850u, 16GB
>P14s G2 i7-1185G7 + Quadro T500 16GB
>All have a 500GB SSD, 1080p display and are around $200.
I mostly want a cheap beater that's lightweight, has good battery life and decently durable.
I'm leaning towards the T14s because it's the lightest, has the best processor and battery, and is all aluminium, but I'm kind of worried about being stuck with 16GB of RAM.
What do you guys think?

If the laptop has only an iGPU, your computer will dynamically allocate 4-8GB ram for video memory.
So you only have 8 GB ram to work with.

2gb of ram on a daily driver, in 2025, so when someone complains about their 16gb not being enough I could laugh
