Advanced Firefox UI customization
Advanced Firefox UI customization
md5: 0cbef67db5e7cac29fb666133e73ce0d๐Ÿ”
Here are some of my Firefox about:config changes (that are not so obvious to be changed) that you may like:
- Disable Pocket native extension (button):
extensions.pocket.enabled to false

- Change UI to compact mode (customization):
browser.uidensity to 1 and
browser.compactmode.show to true

- Remove "Inspect accessibility Properties" (context menu):
devtools.accessibility.enabled to false

- Remove Screenshot native extension (button, context menu):
extensions.screenshots.disabled to true

- Remove AI chatbot integration (sidebar, context menu):
browser.ml.chat.enabled to false

- Remove browser translations (button, context menu):
browser.translations.enable to false

- Remove popup asking to enable DRM (ui):
browser.eme.ui.enabled to false

- Disable expensive backdrop filter CSS property (performance, recommended for old and slow computers only):
layout.css.backdrop-filter.enabled to false

- To enable Hardware Decoding for HEVC:
go to about:support, scroll down to Media section, and click the Install link (will redirect to Microsoft Store)

The items in red on picrel are the elements that will be affected by these changes.
If you don't like some changes, you can click the "left-curved arrow" button in the about:config page to reset that setting to default.

Let me know if I'm forgetting something, or if you want to know how to change or remove something else from Firefox via advanced settings.
There are many settings that I didn't include because they can be easily changed in the about:preferences UI-wise.

I won't ever touch ff again. I hope mozilla dies, but I will use this to trim some fat from my dedicated floorp 4chan shitposting browser on Windows if I ever boot into that again.
Thanks, OP.

Some more (most of them can be disabled via about:preferences, but not all of them, so if you already disabled them in the settings UI page, it should be fine. But you can check from here to be sure):
Disable Sponsored URLs in Address Bar:
browser.urlbar.sponsoredTopSites = false
browser.urlbar.showSponsored = false

Reduce Telemetry and Data Collection:
datareporting.healthreport.uploadEnabled = false
toolkit.telemetry.enabled = false
toolkit.telemetry.unified = false

Disable Firefox View Button
browser.tabs.firefox-view = false

Prevent Suggestions from Mozilla in Address Bar
browser.urlbar.suggest.quicksuggest.nonsponsored = false
browser.urlbar.suggest.quicksuggest.sponsored = false

Enable JPEG XL Support (modern image format)
image.jxl.enabled = true

To fix Firefox font rendering issues introduced in later versions (I updated from 131 to current) and the fonts were all slightly blurry and mismatched.
Accidentally deleted my comparison image but here's the fix

Set
>gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.force_gdi_classic_for_families
To
>Arial,Consolas,Courier New,Microsoft Sans Serif,Segoe UI,Tahoma,Trebuchet MS,Verdana

And
>gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.force_gdi_classic_max_size
To
>15

Also make sure you have
>gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_mode
At the default
>-1

Oh so tab groups are a thing now. I'm having trouble creating one because the tabs keep shifting around under the one I'm dragging. I wonder if it's because of my custom compact mode userchrome.css.

They will work forever. In fact, we will beable to remove the extension button next update. Mozilla wants the browser to be customizable. Things that cant be changed here can be changed with a userChrome.css file.

some might find it annpting to want tp rearrange tabs and have Firefox group them unintentionally.
Or you may just want to keep it enabled, and have control over the AI aspect of it, thus 2 settings.

But it's a preference. I personally have it enabled because it haven't got in my way yet, bit I haven't really found an use for it yet.

Why doesn't Firefox switch to Libรฉration/Croscore fonts by default? Tor has already done so because it's one fewer way you can be profiled. Plus most sites are designed with MS fonts in mind so it might help compatibility.

haven't tested it but this could make your browser easier to fingerprint if you care about that kind of stuff.
the browser's resolution (which is easy to read by websites) would be just a few pixels more in height.
most people don't use about:config flags, so the custom resolution would make you stand out by a lot.

.context-menu-add-engine {

have you also done anything with regards to the sidebar? in librewolf ctrl+h just opens/closes my history, but in firefox it leaves the sidebar open with the same shortcut. ;-;

Toasting in epic bread!

How to disable the full screen transition in about:config:
full-screen-api.transition-duration.enter 0 0
full-screen-api.transition-duration.leave 0 0
If you want to disable the "example.com is now full screen" message too:

full-screen-api.warning.timeout 0
I prefer to leave the warning on as it is apparently an anti-phishing thing, but I hate the black screen transition.

I was gonna make a similar thread myself, glad I noticed this one.

How to properly tell autoplay to fuck off:
media.autoplay.allow-extension-background-pages = false
media.autoplay.block-event.enabled = true
media.autoplay.block-webaudio = true
media.autoplay.default = 5
media.autoplay.blocking_policy = 2

You can reenable permissions on a site by site basis from the button next to the url bar. The change can take a bit of getting used to (you sometimes have to click play multiple times on some websites), but it saved me countless annoyances especially on those god awful YouTube channel pages that just won't shut up no matter what else you try.

/* Optional: If the entire browser window seems to dim, this targets the main HTML element.
This can sometimes catch broader dimming effects. */
html[in-active-window] body {
opacity: 1 !important; /* Prevents the whole browser body from dimming */
}

/* --- Menu Bar (Additional CSS to consider) --- */

/* If the menu bar (e.g., File, Edit, View) also dims, these might help.
Note: The exact selectors for the menu bar can be tricky and browser-version dependent. */

/* This targets the menubar itself if it's considered part of the main window's dimming. */
#main-window:-moz-window-inactive #menubar {
opacity: 1 !important;
}

/* Or more generally, if elements within the menubar dim: */
#menubar:-moz-window-inactive {

}

I just picked the css manually and could find something (picrel is the result).
Try this:
/* Make the background tabs more visible: */
.tabbrowser-tab:not([selected="true"]) .tab-background {
background-color: rgba(207, 207, 216, 0.2);
/* border: solid 1px rgba(207, 207, 216, 0.2); optionally customize the border */
}

If you want to also change the border-color for inactive tabs, just uncomment the border line.
I'm assuming you already have the userChrome.css in the correct folder and toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets enabled.

You can customize the color. The color I chose was the same as the browser already uses when mousing over the tabs.

thanks for the effort, but it's still dimming when firefox loses focus. i'm on fedora 42 kde wayland, if it makes any difference. i have uncommented the border line in the screenshot.

For white theme, try using this instead:
background-color: rgba(207, 207, 216, 0.3);

or

background-color: rgba(207, 207, 216, 0.4);

You're welcome.
I also made the file menu bar more darker in the css below.
The values can be adjusted, I just made it more darker, picrel is the result, but you can customize the color as you want.
Here's a darker option (as in picrel):

/* Make the background tabs more visible: */
.tabbrowser-tab:not([selected="true"]) .tab-background {
background-color: rgba(160, 160, 160, 0.3);
/* border: solid 1px rgba(207, 207, 216, 0.2); optionally customize the border */
}

/* Make the menu bar more visible */
#main-menubar > menu {
background-color: rgba(192, 192, 192, 0.4);
border-right: solid 1px rgb(160, 160, 160);
border-bottom: solid 1px rgb(160, 160, 160);
}

It defeats most of the DRM videos, too.
Videos that go black when you try take a screenshot? You can screenshot them with Firefox's built in screenshot tool (don't report this as a bug).

You can click the button left of the url bar and allow permissions to make playlists work. Then just disable them again once you're done. I don't know if there's a more convenient way to do it for playlists, I don't use them a lot.

Is there any way to define a default window size and position that isn't limited to your screen?
Firefox forces a margin around the window, and won't sit up against the left side of the screen without using something like Sizer. And even that doesn't persist between sessions.
Chromium allows it just fine, and is one of the reasons I'm still using it

restore backspace going back a page:
browser.backspace_action to 0, default is 2 (1 scrolls up a page, shift+backspace scrolls down). 2 just makes it do nothing

disable smooth scrolling
general.smoothScroll
unfortunately, some sites have their own smooth scrolling so this setting may not affect them.

full-screen-api.transition-duration.enter to 0 0
full-screen-api.transition-duration.leave to 0 0
disables the fade in and fade out effects when entering or exiting full screen for videos etc.

it would have been better if it let you select the dimensions you want to screenshot, or automatically stitched images together when you go over the limit
instead, on long pages it just shits itself and offers to screenshot from the top of the page to some arbitrary limit point and no further

You see the right side is weirdly blurry as if it was bit out of focus or something.
Left side is fine.

>pleasant to look at
Sharp fonts with strong hinting are much better for long reading sessions (multiple hours). That's what I meant by "ruining it for the sake of aesthetics". They had a good thing going with Windows 7 and then started sacrificing functionality for aesthetics to casual computer users and retards. It's been form over function ever since, the blurry fonts are just one example of that but an important one.

Thanks. The way Firefox does it by default is very weird. It tries to add related tabs right after and unrelated tabs at the end, I think? But it can't properly tell which is which and ends up feeling random and annoying. Even if it got it down right, it's still probably the wrong approach to new tabs.
