why not linux mobile distro yet?
i think a nice lightweight distro which you can install in every phone could be nice.

no one needed it since android exists and somewhat works
that might change now

I had a pinephone running linux and it was fun for 5 minutes but not really usable as a smartphone

linux kernel vs. android kernel is night and day difference. With linux you can just pop open a terminal and have it do whatever you want. With android youre completely locked out of anything important. Yes you can root but most functionality still wont be there. And no one roots android anymore anyway

I haven't but you can check what devices support it, etc, here https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices
my phone is mostly supported, only a few things are broken it seems, I might give it a try when I buy another phone to replace it since I'm not ready to give it a try on my main one yet

No it's exactly that reason, same as why Windows Mobile died. Lack of official 3rd party app support.

>With linux you can just pop open a terminal and have it do whatever you want.
You can run a terminal on android that can access your files, do phone calls, write messages, read out location and sensor data, and script the hell out of it.
You can plug your phone into a docking station and attach a mouse, keyboard, external drive and monitor.
You can run any distro you like and any DE you like on top of Android.
You can remote into your phone from your PC or use your phone as a remote control.
All of this is possible even without rooting. What the fuck more do you want?
>Spoiler: It's a skill issue, isn't it?

It would be awesome. We're all tired of ultra heavy fat ass Android that gets worse with every version. Battery life should be at least double what it is, if not for useless shit and shittons of spyware.

also (see >>105585602 ) apparently you can install it on an sd card so I might try it on my main phone soon actually. I've flashed it to the sd card already, so whenever I use it depends on whenever I want to fuck around kek

Not him but I also have a Pinephone, when I used it for a few weeks the battery life was rough, and my carrier at the time (Jewgle Fi, admittedly) needed google services for MMS. Phosh had some issues and there was an email + contacts program but in classic Gnome fashion, didn't have graphical support for importing contact cards, there was a 17 year old issue requesting vcard imports. Switching to sxmo made it better but I don't usevit enough to remember all the stuff it has

1. Do not buy a pine product, they are the absolute worst garbage and not even pmos can save it. They have probably destroyed everyones conception of this landscape.
2. Buy anything that supports Sailfish, pmos, or droidian if you are a noob. Compatible devices are dirt cheap on ebay. Performance is butter on a Xperia XA2 which is $30 used.
3. Waydroid for pajeetdroid apps; works on any 3 I listed
4. Linux containers is beatiful, if only you knew
5. If youre a gigachad build mainline with debos-builder and add halium and patched ofono

There's plasma mobile and phosh. It's a matter of drivers and other technologies for biometrics, battery, GPS, carrier and manufacturing support.
The Pinephone was a wasted opportunity, the whole project was more like a scam.
Canonical tried with Ubuntu touch, but also didn't fly. FirefoxOS also couldn't manage to be on more than a single device. Windows Phone couldn't, but there were two big specific factors in that case: Google sueing everyone using their APIs on Windows Phone, and their SDK changing three fucking times.
Even Google itself faced massive rejection for Android GO. Phones just became more powerful instead of adopting a shitty simplied android version.
These tries have made the market reluctant to accept a new platform.

Not at all. Pinephone can plug in a monitor, usb keyboard and mouse, and have a desktop computer experience instantly. Android has nothing approaching this.

Reminder that every phone wether dumb or smart fucking glows. Its best not to have one, if you need a smart device for photos/gps/entertainment use a tablet or ipod touch and dont connect it to the interet, download all your maps and shit you need locally ahead of time. Treat your dumbphone like a house phone and dont carry it around with you

The only phone that is even remotely popular is the pixel 3a and that shit barely even works. Camera barely works(front camera dead), Battery barely works and charges only sometimes, calls are broken and everything that uses a mic since mic does not work at all.

Garbage support. Who would use this garbage? It's dead and the developers should feel bad.
