To be honest it was a stupid motto to begin with.

It's like "Don't rape people", "Don't steal" etc. These stances are common sense and agreed upon by vast majority of people. It doesn't mean anything to adopt that saying as a motto.

It made sense at the time because it was a reaction to companies like Microsoft that were widely seen as evil. Google was marketing themselves as a friendly, non-evil alternative.
