the term "tinkertranny" was what finally made me drop linux

I just embraced it.
Linux users are more likely to DIY other aspects of their life too, you're gonna let some red hat funded psyop discourage you from using linux?

It's term coined by subhumans and corpocucks. Tinkering is fine, it's masculine trait.

Never heard the term, don't care, new terms come out all the time.

Let's be honest though. Tinkering is the antithesis of productive. It's no different from that one /3/ schizo who is obsessed with optimizing his workflow at the expense of everything else. Get your hotkeys and macros sorted, find an environment that suits you best, read some documentation and you're good to go. Needing to constantly fiddle with things just traps you in a vicious OCD cycle where nothing is allowed to just be messy or inefficient or *gasp* stock. And that's fine. Tinkering is like the tech equivalent of a bird preening itself. There's nothing wrong with the act but once it becomes a daily occurrence you should probably like, talk to someone. Sort your salad and whatnot.

I'm sure there's a healthy middle ground somewhere, but it's not always obvious at first. I've kept plenty of useful changes from tinkering, but also discarded plenty of them as bad or useless.

Why do you automatically agree with everything you read? Do you have no self-respect?

Maybe my post was poorly worded, I meant to emphasize the fact that it's not always obvious what the healthy balance is at first. Once you've tinkered for a while, you can do it more efficiently in the future instead of wasting all your time on it and it will feel more balanced, but by the time you've reached that point you've already wasted a lot of time. I don't know if that makes any sense, it's a diminishing returns kind of thing.
