I'm using mint with xfce, and I don't plan on returning to Windows. My shitbox used to overheat in 15 minutes on Windows, but now it runs for five hours and only gets slightly warm. The most significant improvement is that music sounds better on Linux, which I noticed immediately. I don't think I'll ever go back to Windows.

I don't really do rice. All I did was add macos icons (because I couldn't stand default ones) and I blacked out the UI as much as possible to make it easier on my eyes.
I also installed some addons that darken windows in the back to help with focus. I usually just have one or two windows open on the desktop but I opened a few so you can see what they look like.

Xfce is the greatest [GTK-based DE] of all time, but Cinnamon is a very close close second. MATE, on the other hand, should just be abandoned at this point, and all of its utilities should be merged into Cinnamon (calc, system-monitor, engrampa etc...). Now THAT, would put Cinnamon and Xfce on the same footing. It has long boggled my mind that a very popular DE like Cinnamon lacks so many basic utilities of its own.

Look, I've used both. I started off with Xfce. I ended up using Cinnamon because if Nemo FM. It's by far the best FM on Linux and it trumps Thunar, Nautilus etc.. Everything else feels gimped and like a toy. So instead of installing both the Xfce and Cinnamon environments to get Nemo under Xfce, I just switched.
Cinnamon is great if you have more than 8GB of RAM. 16-32 GB is ideal. It just flies. It's fast and has a few really nice interface animations which make the OS look modern. Those can be turned off, of course, if you're on a lower specc'd machine.
Cinnamon also has better extensions and applets and they install with a click. Number of high-quality themes is also higher than Xfce has.

But at the end of the day, I don't really care about the looks. All I care about is features. If I had to go back to Xfce, it would adjust in a day. It's just that Cinnamon exists and has nicer integration and is better organized and offers better experience overall (especially if you use Linux Mint distro).

Incidentally, if you use Linux Mint distro, all the backup stuff "just works" which is an amazing feature if you're not a technical person. And even if you are, it's so simple to use that you can do it painlessly and never lose much data.

I don't use LM because I prefer Arch and pacman and rolling release distros. I also partition my disks differently than defaults of most distros so running that kind of a setup is not easy on LM (or Fedora etc.).

I love Mint to bits, its the only distro I tried when MS were just shitting the bed with broken updates during the recall fiasco and surrounding incompetence.

It literally JUST WORKS, I can update if I want and it doesn't force me at gunpoint to do it if I don't want to right now. Updates are seamless and rarely need a restart (although restarting is quicker than on windows too, albeit this is a minor point).
Steam proton fixes the gaming issue almost entirely on its own, anything that needs kernel AC is dogshit you shouldn't be playing since its all mindraping gacha or matchmaking slop.

It's just amazing, long live Mint.

I have that issue on nvidia, but also font rendering getting fucked (on Plasma, not GNOME). Fractional scaling distorts fonts. I need at least 110% to make my 1440p monitor worth using. There used to be an alternative that sort of worked fine (changing font scaling) but on KDE Plasma 6 that option was hidden in favor of forcing fractional scaling. I think it can be enabled again, but it introduces weird shit like having the applications menu open in the wrong place. On GNOME no fractional scaling has been achieved yet if I'm not mistaken, so the option is still there under GNOME Tweaks. Before I replaced my GPU, that's how I used to make "scaling" work and didn't have these artifacts all over the screen. I've been getting them from recent tests and I wondered why, but you basically confirmed some bug report I've seen about scaling being the culprit.
In my case I do use HDR frequently, so I have no option other than KDE Plasma. GNOME is not working well with it for an unknown reason. And I wish, but I won't give it up for X11, so all I can do is wait until someone finds a way to jam that into Xlibre.

I respect the choice but I prefer Windows 7. Every time I start thinking about switching to linux, there are always some programs that I would miss. I also dont want to get rid of my old laptop that wont run modern windows well.

I've been running Linux Mint (formerly Windows all my life) on my work Laptop for two years now, and on my at home setup for almost a year now. Everything just works on this machine, except for the apps that actively try to not work on it. It's a very nice gateway into gaining a smoother and less bloated desktop that still feels very user friendly.

mint was my first linux, i liked it very much but i eventually learned that i needed newer versions of stuff for gaming issues i was having and then switched to fedora (kde). the more i learned about fedora and linux itself the less i liked it, moved to arch with kde and now arch with hyprland. now i'm obscessed with ricing and don't actually get anything done on my pc anymore.

Opensuse is better.

Exactly the opposite, Arch mostly ships big fatass packages. A lot of stuff that's spread over 3-5 packages on Debian (and derivatives) is just one package on Arch.
This is arguably a huge plus for PC setups though. Storage is cheap.

I'm using a meme distro myself for shits and giggles (cachyOS) and the novelty is wearing off. Still gaming though.
A few struggles:
Audio not switching automatically to and from my headset when it's plugged in so I'm Having to manually switch and guess which one is correct in the menu.
Sound issues in one game.(unsolved)
Editing FSTAB to not have to enter my password every time I access my 2nd drive.
Getting steam to look at my 2nd drive for already installed games.
Slowly disabling the need to input my password every time I so much as stare in the direction of a folder or dare to press keys in terminal.

Dealing with file bloat because steam is saving shit on both drives.(300gigs of auxiliary files on my OS only drive including for games I don't even have installed/never DLd on this drive)
Time shift is defaulted to eat up your space and 90% of my file bloat is defaulted to be hidden files and folders lmao.
OS told me that a file was too big for the recycling bin and could only be deleted permanently on the spot, lmao wut.
Having to redo my FSTAB after a kernal update borked my 2nd drive entry in it some how.

Some of these issues aren't unique to Linux but God damn is it all so tiresome.

Also enjoy not having access to any of your GPUs proprietary software settings.
Also anything with anti cheat is unplayable on Linux.
That said.
MH wilds and elden ring run fine for me other than audio in ER sometimes.
