The real answer is a SFF case

With how tall and heavy modern GPUs and CPU coolers have become, horizontal desktop orientations are due for a major comeback (not that they ever left the DC/Enterprise market). PCIe slots and socket brackets were never really meant to handle that kind of perpendicular sheering force.

unironically not a terrible idea except for that rack in particular you're wasting a lot of depth. also the cables coming out the side.
I assume, having not looked into it that there aren't a lot of options form rack mount systems with "gamer" gpus.

Desktop (or just horizontal form factor) makes so much more sense now than it does to keep using towers.

I use tower rotated, because my gpu is 310mm and I don't want it to sag. Yes, I have a bracket, but I don't trust it. Also I'm not going to buy overpriced case to support a card that shouldn't be so big in the first place. I'm waiting for the return of smaller cards, because fuck these monsters cards. When I was buying it I didn't realize that it's going to be so big. It's been years and I still only see big fucking cards. Everything is getting smaller, but GPUs are not only not getting smaller, but bigger. That's such a bullshit. How come the laptops and APUS can have capable GPU in such small space, but desktop GPUs are fatter and longer than bricks?

On top. I actually might buy this case and switch to an matx for my next upgrade. I'd prefer if it didn't have the glass tbqh, but it's hard to find cases at all with this layout so can't be too choosy

Desktops only made sense with small CRT screens.
The desktop went on your desk, the small CRT went on your desktop raising it to eye level.

When CRT's grew over 14" or so they had to be lowered so there was no space left for a desktop.
That's when people put the computer on the ground instead.
And when you put the computer on the ground a tower makes more sense to save leg room.

But then zoomers were born and they love RGB so they put computers back on the desk to look at the RGB even if it wastes precious desk space.

Towers also made physical sense when pci and agp cards were lightweight and the heaviest components were hard drives and optical drives. Now drives are obsolete other than m.2 and instead we have huge heavy graphics cards and are still mounting them vertically, which is retarded. The most optimal layout for the current day use case is dual channel, horizontal motherboard cube shaped cases.

Right isn't a desktop though.
It's a UI.

And calling that type of UI a desktop makes little sense.
When computers were new they said "look, it has a calculator and a notebook...just like your desktop", but that's where the similarity ends.

I agree graphics cards are too heavy for their slots.
But heat pipes work best with the GPU at the lowest point.

It's silly they didn't just come up with a standardized support system for graphics cards.
Like a screw hole at a standard location where every case manufacturer could add a support arm to.
