I was thinking more about it and there's a lot to say. I have a love hate relationship with it. I think the "just use soulseek" advice for people who want to do casual piracy is bad. We need to send them to the ripping sites instead. But if you know what you're doing and want to dig up rare shit it's a powerful tool just with zero quality control. If you have a RED account once you no longer have any handout tokens left a good trick is to search for CD rips you want and look at the log. Then you can look for rips of the same CD on slsk and see if the logs match. Easy way to avoid wasting your buffer and a lot of the time you can even cross seed it. Other than that a lot of rare music was ripped by scene groups a long time ago and was never done by people on private trackers. Especially if it's on vinyl. I can use srrdb for information about these old rips to cross reference what I am finding on slsk. If it's being renamed I can use the srr file to recreate the original release with tags and everything. Other than that there's so much shit on there. Bootlegs, radio rips, various things that would never be allowed on RED. If you're really into it you can find a lot of unique stuff. But I've also downloaded lots of obvious YouTube rips from there too. If that was what I wanted I could use yt-dlp and archive the opus file instead of keeping their shitty transcode.

Right now if I want to upload something I need to create the torrent and upload it from my desktop, then transfer the file to my server, and then add the torrent file to qbit webui to start seeding from my server but I feel like there has to be a better way of doing this.

I've come to the conclusion I'll never live somewhere with good upload speed for remote plex streaming. I'm just going to focus on setting up my seedbox well. Only thing I'm leery of is not seeding long enough really if I set my auto delete rules to ~90 days unwatched with a 4tb whatbox.ca server. Any other anons just use a seedbox instead of home storage too? Would be nice to stop using my shitty claptrap home server and just have it streamlined to using watchlists and whatnot. Ratio is just a bad system that easily punishes and discourages healthy behavior. The idea is that it encourages continued seeding but there are better ways. GGn actually does pretty decently with the share score system lowering your ratio requirement, potentially to zero. But if you make use of that and your share score comes down, suddenly your required ratio is over your head. And GGn most needs seeding because it's also an archival project.

I've abused cross-seeding a fair amount and really haven't gotten all that much for it in ratio. It just keeps my seeding:snatched over 100%. The best time to get credit is during the initial upload swarm and you miss a lot of that if you aren't in it immediately by just downloading directly.

I have, however, not participated in the item system. It seems kinda weakly documented how you're supposed to get up and running in it or even what you're supposed to do with it. And also it's just a fucking gay minigame.

I saw the seasonFromEpisodes option was grouping seasons before applying the blocklist and I ended up with bogus searches when it decided an album was a partially downloaded season instead, even if category:Music was in the blocklist. The lossless files are stored on mediums such as hard drives or ssds. I do not live in a Mumbai slum so I am able to afford enough storage for all the losslessly compressed CD quality audio I could possibly want. I even store some 24 bit bloat too. In the late 80s through to the mid 2000s 16 bit 44.1 lossless audio was the standard and nobody called it audiophile placebo. I don't think it's all that ridiculous to store such audio even if I can't tell the difference between it and audio compressed with a lossy audio codec. I am not opposed to using lossy compression. If I want to store music on my phone I will encode lossy files to do so. Retaining the original lossless source allows me to encode new files at any time I wish. Lossy->lossy transcodes are bad, hence my desire to keep archival grade material.
