Chat protocols are one of the few things that have actually improved since the 2000s. It's just a shame they also became so locked down that you can't even run your own server or client.

Maybe they're not any worse, but I wouldn't say they're better either. Discord is a complete clusterfuck and writing a bot for it without a library is just miserable.
IRC set the gold standard for a simple and robust protocol, but instead of learning from it, everyone either tries to reinvent Discord or, god forbid, reinvent XMPP.

IRC isn't robust at all. We need file uploads, profile pictures and a decent client that feels intuitive.
My only problem with XMPP is that it forces you to dox your email by default.
All the clients for Matrix are also crap and it's also unintuitive.
Right now me and my friends are on Telegram. They are willing to move but no other protocol is good enough.

Yes cause not all my friends are that tech literate, and I don't exactly want to go out of my way to upload pepe.jpeg to a third party server to copypaste the url either. Another thing to consider is mobile applications.

ok, which clients have file upload and pfp? :|
Does it have bouncer integration? Is there a mobile app that has most of this?
Like how much would I need to explain much to an e-girl?

none, but many clients can retrieve an image from a URL:

IRCCloud can do that AFAIK

I don't think you understand what "robust" means. But yeah, making a retard-proof chat client that isn't a centralized botnet is extremely hard.

It's slightly annoying many servers only list the domain name.

well, IRC decided that you need more, that's why every IRC server has a the NickServ bot to register and special settings to not doxx every user by default and then HostServ because its still not enough and then ChanServ because per default, as soon as you leave the channel you created, you lose ownership of it, oh and also bouncers because you can't keep a history otherwise and every user runs its own bouncer. Oh and IRCs file transfer is a direct connection between clients that can dox you as well and it again wasn't considered in the original protocol, but strapped on.

oh wow, IRC is just SOOOO GOOOOD and well thought through! We need to GO BACK

I still don't understand why every open source project switched from Freenode immediately to Matrix. What about XMPP? It's far more lightweight, you can literally buy the cheapest VPS you can find with 512 MiB RAM and Prosody will run just fine, with every XMPP feature enabled. I really want to love Matrix, but Element is too fucking buggy, it's not even remotely feasible to host Synapse on a shitty VPS with low disk space and no other homeserver has the feature parity. Even XMPP somehow looks better compared to Matrix.

Why? What difference does it make having LE FUNNAH ANIMATED AVATAR over a user name?

Like, I'd understand image uploads or the ability to embed, but avatars are the least of IRC's issues for "modernity" and I'm an old fag that thinks half that shit (image embeds, file uploads on the "server", etc.) in Discord is useless next to IRC.
