bro, just install the binaries if you are getting stuck. I think there are a few places where you need to read between the lines if following the handbook for a custom kernel compile.

I got it on my second try on bare metal, only complicated by poor linux drivers for my AMD igpu which caused crashes until I disabled it

it's based on arch but optimized for performance. it will easily match (or outperform) any gentoo system and will be 1000x faster to set up. and don't get hung up on minimalism, this is not a 100GB windows installation, you can tweak and install/uninstall anything you want with pacman
