i just bought one too. it feels awesome to use. i still feel guilty though because /g/ makes me feel bad about giving in and being a faggot.
the only bullshit i have experienced so far is i cannot keep the device awake when closed and plugged into hdmi though a usb-c adapter. i always have to have the lid slightly cracked when on battery in this case. everything else is really good. use iina for video

True. To be honest I'd just get an M3 Mac Mini since you can get a 1TB SSD and 16 or 32gb RAM for about as much as the M4 Mini (if you find a sale, which there are plenty of). Yearly upgrades in chips are pretty meh so going a previous chip is just as good.

I'm with ya, anon. I got mine on sale at Costco. I have a still-capable gaming laptop but wanted something silent and portable to remote into my windows desktop. I love not lugging a power brick, I love silence, I love the battery life, I love the screen and I love the connection with my iphone (2fa codes from phone on my screen is awesome), ipad (additional touchscreen) and airpods. I really miss having 10 key and will have to buy a portable chink one I fear. I also can't into using the windows app on full screen with an external monitor, but haven't had >>105617317

MBP M1 Pro for work and desktop and Thinkpad with Arch for everything else.
Wish I had a Macbook Air (M3 or newer) instead desu, sometimes I need to carry two laptops and my bag gets a bit bulky.

I'm actually struggling to decide if I get an M4 Air and get the large SSD and extra RAM, or if I get M4 Pro with the slightly lesser specs, since the price comes out as cheaper with the Air. I feel like my M2 does alright with some video and photo editing, but definitely doesn't have enough storage or RAM for properly using 4K editing or large RAW files (since I upgraded my camera gear recently).

Shame Apple is fucking customers over with external display limitations, otherwise I would've been happy with an M2 Air with 16GB of memory.

I'm happy to just edit on the Airs screen to be honest. I also only have the 8GB model since at the time I planned on just using it for being away from home and not doing much, but I've found I enjoy using it, so I've been wondering if I go with
>M4 Air with 16 or 32GB, 512GB or 1TB SSD
Or
>M4 Pro 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD
The price roughly sits about equal, with the Air being slightly cheaper with those specs, but I'm wondering if the Pro with its fans and slightly beefier GPU is more worthwhile (though I like the Air the most for being thin and completely silent).

Reportedly a DisplayLink adapter seems to work, with the caveat being that you need to disconnect it before you can play DRM-protected video (streaming services, not YT).

What's your workload? Passive cooling on the air is pretty good until you push the thing to its limit for extended time, like 4k 3d/video editing/rendering.

Anything less intensive than that (including running dozens of Docker containers and multiple IDEs for your projects) shouldโ„ข be fine on an Air.

Probably one task at a time and doing some 4K video editing. I've been doing it on my M2 Air with only 8GB and it's handled it like a champ, but I do see the swap memory getting touched often (unsurprising obviously) but the temp never really seems to increase even if I'm editing for an hour or two. Lightroom also fucks the swap memory pretty hard and I guess that's just Adobe, since Davinci Resolve barely touches swap if I'm doing a 1080 edit.

FYI I remember people saying m3/m4 airs do get (significantly?) hotter than m1/m2 airs. Might be worth looking into.

Imho, get the m4 pro with 16/512. The screen and audio are much better. An extra 512 gb on the air is nice, but there's probably lots of shit you can offload to a NAS or the cloud anyway.

I generally keep most of my shit on an external SSD, but I guess I was just thinking about how iCloud Syncs literally everything and uploaded video files to iCloud means they always end up on the Mac and I have to offload them.

I'm very tempted by the Pro the most since 512GB should be enough for me but I've just wondered if 16GB really is enough RAM.

Jelly. I have a mbp m1 base model (8/256) I use for hobby projects. My workhorse is a pimped out t480 but it's on its knees with the slop we call code at work. My m1 committed sudoku the instant I tried to get some work done on there.

Considering getting a m4 pro 16/512 in a few years to replace both machines.

Anecdotally I'm surprised with how much my m1 mbp 8/256 can handle. I do need to run OrbStack instead of Docker Desktop, but it's handling that + jetbrains IDEs just fine. It's only when I open 10+ browser tabs, discord, spotify/youtube AND slack at the same time where it starts to swap.

True, I've been pretty amazed with how the M2 8/256gb has handled everything I throw at it. It doesn't even touch swap if I edit 1080 videos but does for 4K, and I never see swap get used if I'm doing pretty much anything else. It also never slows down or gets warm even when doing the 4K shit, it's pretty incredible.
Meanwhile my Windows laptop would get pretty hot and kick on the fans if I just tried editing some photos in Lightroom.

The screenshot you shows the time for compiling Linux in it's DEFAULT configuration, x86_64 crosscompilation with an ARM chip but of course you no coder pajeets will never say that, Apple Silicon already proved to be beasts of compilation.

Also who the fuck cares about compiling Loonix like if it's any relevant? Is that what Loonix users do everyday?

Recently bought one and it's everything my millennial ass wants in a computer in 2025. It's fast, took no time to set up, does everything I need, which is administrative shit and a handful of unix tools. iTerm 2 is amazing. If you have all the periphery and don't need gaymen, it's the best option. I'm pretty sure it outclasses my 2014 gaymen desktop while using a factor 20 less power.
