i just bought one too. it feels awesome to use. i still feel guilty though because /g/ makes me feel bad about giving in and being a faggot.
the only bullshit i have experienced so far is i cannot keep the device awake when closed and plugged into hdmi though a usb-c adapter. i always have to have the lid slightly cracked when on battery in this case. everything else is really good. use iina for video

I'm actually struggling to decide if I get an M4 Air and get the large SSD and extra RAM, or if I get M4 Pro with the slightly lesser specs, since the price comes out as cheaper with the Air. I feel like my M2 does alright with some video and photo editing, but definitely doesn't have enough storage or RAM for properly using 4K editing or large RAW files (since I upgraded my camera gear recently).

I'm happy to just edit on the Airs screen to be honest. I also only have the 8GB model since at the time I planned on just using it for being away from home and not doing much, but I've found I enjoy using it, so I've been wondering if I go with
>M4 Air with 16 or 32GB, 512GB or 1TB SSD
Or
>M4 Pro 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD
The price roughly sits about equal, with the Air being slightly cheaper with those specs, but I'm wondering if the Pro with its fans and slightly beefier GPU is more worthwhile (though I like the Air the most for being thin and completely silent).

What's your workload? Passive cooling on the air is pretty good until you push the thing to its limit for extended time, like 4k 3d/video editing/rendering.

Anything less intensive than that (including running dozens of Docker containers and multiple IDEs for your projects) shouldβ„’ be fine on an Air.

Probably one task at a time and doing some 4K video editing. I've been doing it on my M2 Air with only 8GB and it's handled it like a champ, but I do see the swap memory getting touched often (unsurprising obviously) but the temp never really seems to increase even if I'm editing for an hour or two. Lightroom also fucks the swap memory pretty hard and I guess that's just Adobe, since Davinci Resolve barely touches swap if I'm doing a 1080 edit.

FYI I remember people saying m3/m4 airs do get (significantly?) hotter than m1/m2 airs. Might be worth looking into.

Imho, get the m4 pro with 16/512. The screen and audio are much better. An extra 512 gb on the air is nice, but there's probably lots of shit you can offload to a NAS or the cloud anyway.

>I've just wondered if 16GB really is enough RAM
Anecdotally I'm surprised with how much my m1 mbp 8/256 can handle. I do need to run OrbStack instead of Docker Desktop, but it's handling that + jetbrains IDEs just fine. It's only when I open 10+ browser tabs, discord, spotify/youtube AND slack at the same time where it starts to swap.
Anonymous No.105619608
>>105619570
True, I've been pretty amazed with how the M2 8/256gb has handled everything I throw at it. It doesn't even touch swap if I edit 1080 videos but does for 4K, and I never see swap get used if I'm doing pretty much anything else. It also never slows down or gets warm even when doing the 4K shit, it's pretty incredible.
Meanwhile my Windows laptop would get pretty hot and kick on the fans if I just tried editing some photos in Lightroom.

Recently bought one and it's everything my millennial ass wants in a computer in 2025. It's fast, took no time to set up, does everything I need, which is administrative shit and a handful of unix tools. iTerm 2 is amazing. If you have all the periphery and don't need gaymen, it's the best option. I'm pretty sure it outclasses my 2014 gaymen desktop while using a factor 20 less power.

macOS is one of the worst designed operating systems, they seek simplicity and usability so much they achieved to make an operating system that's quite literally imposible to use with how garbage the UX is.
Finder is the worst file manager I've ever used.
