Does middle clicking a lot break your scroll wheel? Because I middle click a lot and the scroll wheels on my mice usually last less than a year before they start fucking up.

Doesnt mean you cant use it. Just get int habit of applying just enough pressure to trigger the click. Anymore inevitably causes greater wear which leads to failure in the long run. Or just shell out the money for a high quality mouse.

which is why you should only ever buy a $10 chinkmouse. For the cost of replacing one flaky switch, you can just get a new mouse.
You can spend a bit more on a keyboard as long as its hotswappable.

I've had a g502 proteus spectrum for 7 years and I middle click a lot, like all of the fucking time (to open stuff in new tabs)
mainboard failed, replaced it with a g502x, 2 and a half years and a bijillion middle clicks later, still fine.
dunno how you retards keep fucking up your scroll wheels, for me it just werks
Anonymous No.105617553
From my experience, if the wheel itself is cheaply made you can physically break it with enough force or use. The actual mechanism it uses is the same as the other buttons. $100+ mice have higher quality mouse wheels but eventually all mice are bound to fail one way or another.

Except that anyone who knows how to computer uses it every day to open new tabs in their web browser and file manager.

Also, middle click paste is quite nifty.

Have you ever tried using canned air on the opening for the mouse wheel? Dust and shit trapped in there is usually what's causing issues with mouse wheel scrolling, dunno about using it for clicking
Anonymous No.105618125
no, i double click all the time and my mice last many years. I never broke a scroll wheel. Double clicking is the problem I usually get, then it's time for either tape fix or switch replacement.
Anonymous No.105618180
Short answer yes
Long answer it depends on the quality of the switch, just like right and left mouse switches. I had two Logitech G Pro mice whose MMB switches failed within 6 months. Popped the mice open, replaced them with ultra high end MMB switches (which cost a whopping $2 on Amazon instead of the cheap $1 shit Logi uses), and they've been working for at least 7 years now.

I have that cheap ass Razer mouse since '18. My scroll wheel is fine and I middle click to open in a new tap all the time. What I like is that the gear on the scroll wheel encoder is completely open, so you can actually spray contact cleaner in it when it gets jumpy.

Anonymous No.105621219

No it doesn't. The button will last as long as the other buttons, but the actual scrolling should last forever.
Any time my mouse wheel has started getting flaky, it's just been dirty.
Opening it up, blasting it with an air duster can, pulling any hair out with tweezers, and giving the inside a wipe with a wad of paper towels has *always* restored it to original function.
Have gone through two mice in the last 15 years, the only repair being a cable swap. Both cheap logitech models.

Stop buying contact encoder trash and get a mouse with an optomechanical wheel. Especially stay away from Razer, shit failed me after a month, I've had better $10 noname mice than that.
When replacing it I asked the guy in the store to open all the mouse boxes for me and let me try the wheels one by one. Picrel stood out as it felt just like my ancient 2002 logitech optical that recently fell apart on me, and sure enough, it's the same type of wheel. I've been abusing it for over 2 years and it's still solid. In any case, just do what I did. If you feel the distinct click of a metal spring when you turn the wheel, that's a mouse you can trust. Once you've had an optical wheel you can easily tell, in fact, once upon a time all mice had that type of sensor. (ball mice used an identical sensor for the rollers and wheel, contact rotaries were completely unheard of)

right click + open in new tab is easier than pressing the scrollwheel that never works and has to be pressed hard as fuck
also websites usually open a link in a new tab when clicking it with mouse 1, if the target is not to the same site

Also to actually answer OP's question, no, using mouse3 does not break the mousewheel unless the axle were to literally snap. At least for optical wheels, it might degrade a contact rotary by wiggling it out of shape faster. In any case I've never had that issue on optical wheels and I'm a serious mouse3 user.
ps. do not get a zowie FK if you like clicking mouse3, someone I know had that button break entirely on that

so what you're saying is if the scrollwheel does work and isn't hard as fuck it is superior? i don't know what old mouse you're coming from but the microswitches for anything within the last 8 years have improved for middle clicks. i'm using an aliexpress chink mouse for 20 bucks thats a deathadder clone and the clicks are fine.

The only one that ever broke for me was this piece of shit of the corsair scimitar, not even 9 months and the scrollwheel broke off from the rotary encoder, it is build specifically to break, you can tell by the structure of the stud that connects the wheel to the rotary encoder.

Office mouses are built to last as they are bought in bulk by companies every X years for equipment renovations, gaming mouses are a small niche and are build with faults so that gamers keep spending money on them ever 1-3 years.

I'm not sure what do you mean when you say "a lot" but I have not had a scroll wheel wear out on any of my mice and I use it all the time. Maybe it's about how much force you're applying, maybe you were simply unlucky with the quality of mice that you bought. I've had a Logitech G400s for 10 years and the middle wheel still works perfectly fine, I also have a Razer Deathadder V2 for 3 years now and the scroll wheel is good as new.
