It helps to trace the execution if you don't understand it immediately. I didn't, personally. I started at it for hours until I conceded defeat and broke out the pen and paper to really understand what was going on with respect to time and space complexity. Tree problems make a lot more sense in general when you look at them visually... but trying to visualize can also sometimes become a crutch. It's not a black-and-white thing.

correct. and yet, it's still written in the diction and rhythm characteristic of mathematicians... probably because it was written by mathematicians.

It's just very precise. That precision, paradoxically, can sometimes make things harder to understand when dealing with unfamiliar problems. But SICP is a book that very much assumes you're willing to sit with the discomfort of often not knowing what the fuck is going on. It wants to believe that you are the kind of person who's willing to work for your understanding if you have to... and I'm tempted to say that everyone has to unless they come in already knowing everything. Even then, I think some of the exercises are just genuinely cognitively taxing in a universal way. There are some aspects which are conceptually challenging and others whose difficulty is in just pure cognition.

It's designed to teach an epistemological framework. Back in the day, programming wasn't seen as just a skill to get you a job but the gateway to computation as a paradigm. It's soulful and even romantic, yeah, but it's that way not because of pretense but because of genuine belief.

Not in an efficient or terse way though, and they really put no thought into making it pleasant to read. Which is you know, why it reads like complete ass. Mathematicians shouldn't be allowed to write books desu.

this was when i realized programming and software development are two separate domains of knowledge and that excelling at one doesn't immediately translate to better results for the other.
i still constantly shill it to my colleagues regardless.

it's not. it's awful. it's a university text, not a self-contained work. most people who rave about it have never bothered to work through it. they 'read' it, go on about how brilliant it is and that's it.

there is no answer to "why should i use your shitlang instead of C" that isn't a bible length essay of nonsense
your computer contains a CPU that moves data in and out of registers and memory and uses interrupts and other mechanisms to interact with real actual physical hardware you can touch with your hands. if this reality shatters your shitter so badly that you bury your face in the wrinkly sad tits of programming paradigms that hide this reality from you so you can feel like a big math genius smartypants while you uselessly tinkertranny your life away instead of doing real work, then I hesitate to call you a programmer. but you won't hesitate to call me, because you're an indian trying to get a google play store giftcard, and I will promptly hang up when i hear your fucked up marblemouth accent
