I prefer dark mode but only when the it's implemented properly. Low-contrast, super high contrast, and hard to read dark modes are worse than cancer.

Light mode most of the time. I know its controversial, but for me personally when I'm reading white text on black backdrops, I can literally physically feel my eyes straining more.

Also despite practically living in the basement of my house and only going upstairs to sleep/eat, I keep the windows open and get a decent amount of natural light, which reduces any issues from general screen brightness on light mode anyways.

Your preference wont matter soon. EU will conclude black mode uses less power and is more "sustainable", so they will start "encouraging" designers to target black mode.
Then the requlations will come and white mode will slowly go away.

I use dark mode cuz otherwise there's no point to having an OLED screen. Reading anything longer than a 4chan post is nicer in light mode though.

Depends on the lighting conditions, light mode is easier to see when outside and my wearing sunglasses so I use the light/dark mode on my phone and laptop. My desktop is in a fairly dark room so it stays on dark mode all the time. I will say, the theme matters a lot, years and years ago before darkmode extensions were common; I used a darkmode stylesheet that made all background #000000 and the text banana yellow, I think that was the worst eye pain I've experienced from a theme.
