How Windows is the dominant system OS instead of Mac is still beyond me
>No OS ads
>No in-built bloatware
>Unified RAM-SSD memory
>Great battery life
>Top-of-the-line build quality
>Much longer lifespan
Common counterarguments:
>You can remove ads with third party software
I don't want to study a semester in computer science to fix what shouldn't be there in the first place
>Games
Mac has a growing library of them
>Just install linux lmfao
The only major OS with worse UX than Windows

Honestly, just try used 16 inch m1 first to see if you like the macOS, these m1 ones are still pretty good. Also they are releasing m5 soon so all these m4 pro's will pop on the market for much less.

Simple. Tell Apple to release an installable version of their OS to any x86_64 and/or ARM platforms and a lot of people will switch.
The reason most people won't use it is because it is expensive, specially if you don't live in burgerland.

Macs are leagues ahead of Windows, thatโ€™s true. A Unix-like OS with a world class UX is all I could hope for. Only things keeping me from switching over are:
>vendor lock-in (hardware required)
>canโ€™t be repaired or modified
>expensive OEM support
>limited customization
>opaque package management
>no intuitive access to low level constructs, for use with embedded systems etc.

Literally doesn't matter if Windows force-bricks your PC. Happened to one I bought in 2017, perfectly strong hardware, over time due to the forced updates and bloatware (processes I wasn't allowed to disable) it straight up couldn't work. Rinse and repeat, God knows they're attacking our PCs as we speak with their jeetbloat forced updates.

you can build a similar spec PC as the m4 mac mini.
for example:
$100 cpu (13100f / 13400f / 5500)
$130 mobo
$50 32gb ddr4
$50 1 tb nvme (mp44l)
$50 case
$50 bronze PSU
$180 3050 6gb (I hate to put this here, but it absolutely destroys any budget IGPU, the 5060 / 9060 has ~50% better cost per frame but it costs $300+, ideally you could find a similar spec GPU for like $80 on facebook marketplace)
That's $610
>that's too expensive / shit hardware
It's absolutely worse in some ways (slower ram is the main issue, ddr4 isn't going to drop your FPS much, but it does matter in productivity for like bender CPU rendering I think), but the CPU is basically the same, much more ram and SSD space, and the 3050 is about twice as strong as the m4 IGPU (and the 3050 6gb is a joke of a GPU, but it makes IGPU's look like a joke, except for the AMD AI max 385 that's $1000 on framework which is a bit worse than just replacing the 3050 with a 5060 / 9060 or better).

there is no equivalent to macs

macs have:
>soldered SSD/RAM/WLAN
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when pajeetOS runs out of RAM it swapfile rapes the SSD to death within 3 years
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when the SSD dies it bricks your entire currybook because the EFI is stored on the soldered SSD to save $0.05
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>components serial numbered and tied to the motherboard to prevent repair and replacement (including battery)
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>riveted keyboard that requires total destruction of the chassis to replace
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>flexgate cables that are so brittle they crack from opening your screen past 90 degrees more than 2 dozen times
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screens so fucking shit they have over 90ms response times (essentially 10Hz)
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screen made from pajeet trash glass that cracks from temperature change in seasons or tape over the iBotnet webcam
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>so fire and explosion prone the FAA have banned them from all flights
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>uses phone CPU that's so shit it gets destroyed by decade old i3s from 2017 and can only "compete" by cheating at benchmarks in extreme edge cases with hardware accelerators
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>curryniggers at apploo get so full of sniffing their own currynigger silicon shit they ship currybooks with no fans and they run so hot they melt the keyboard keys
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs

>keyboards with 63.5% failure rate
unheard of on PCs, and yet you curryniggers defend it with "jus werx fer me!"
just because you're in the 36.5% survivor group doesn't make your currynigger trash any good
this list goes on forever
there's no PC laptop as total fucking currynigger shit as crapple's streetshitter books
they are one of the biggest heaps of steaming currynigger shit in the history of computing second only to curryPhones

Finder is the biggest pile of dog shit. You would think that with Apple's trillions they could afford to buy something like Forklift and integrate it, making their OS more usable, but no.
You'd think that maybe someone in the design team might be able to make it easier to add third party software without manually enabling it in an obscure window.
Nope.

The build quality of these computers is impressively unparalleled. They last forever assuming you don't beat them to shit. Apple's annoying software updates obsoletes it faster than the machine dies out.
Between you and I, the 2015 Intel MacBook pro was peak Apple hardware design. And the x86 architecture made the laptop ugly versatile.
Apple only just recently got that back with their new MacBook pros but arm is still gay. Not being able to run windows in bootcamp sucks ass though I guess you could put windows arm on these if you really wanted to.
If all you do is basic web browsing, email, and office work a Mac will do you fine. My biggest pet peeve is they don't support a video technology that every USB c dock has.
Between you and I, they're just status symbols. Nice hardware at least but there are plenty of PCs that fit the same longevity requirements and won't be EoL as quickly.

even the original M1 Pro 14" 16GB/512GB is better than 90% of the garbage on the market. I bought one for ~$800 off Woot and it's more powerful than I need buy a wide margin, and I regularly do video editing in 4K.

Microsoft simply cannot figure out ARM architecture for some reason. Even the Qualcomm laptops they have out now don't match the battery life or overall compute power.

Why Apple hasn't decided to upgrade the original M1 Air to M2/M3 get the remaining juice out of that machine tooling is weird to me. They could undercut the entire under $500 laptop segment with value and totally shred the low end of Microsoft laptops forever. The iPad just isn't the same as a legitimate laptop until they get macOS on it for the same price point.

Nigga... Are you for real? Almost every single generation of Macs has some major design flaw. Putting a ton of wattage through a single pin on the ribbon cable frying it, the butterfly keyboards (and they were riveted in), multiple generations of dGPUs running so hot they literally desolder from the board, thunderbolt failures, running the power for the board through the SSD so your system won't boot if your soldered on SSD fails, etc. I can go on and on with this. Apple makes literally the worst computers.

90% of people don't need a macbook pro though, that's the problem with all of these comparisons

normies can buy a Macbook Air and have it last them 5-7 years if they take care of it.

Apple banks on the fact that the people that buy them for status can't take care of it and will break it at some point, so the retards that purchase more computer than they need and end up needing repairs are actually subsidizing the people using them for work.

That's why people are so angry about the fact that Apple are killing off repairability, it used to be a cheat code to buy old Macs and fix them up because you could just download the new macOS and basically have a new computer without Microjeet for a similar price that performs much better because of the high code quality and unix-like OS.

I'm typing this on my Mac Pro 2019 from macOS Tahoe 26 Beta that I got about a year ago for $1800. I put 1TB DDR4 and the 28-core Xeon in it and run my OpenFoam workflow on it without any issues for about half the price of one of the new Mac Studios.

I don't have any additional onboard storage for my Mac Pro, just a 10gbe card and and NFS mount so this has never been an issue for me. This solarflare card is like 10 years old at this point so I could probably upgrade it for a lower-power version that has actual support if I wanted to but it's still working just fine.

I guess I'd need to buy a TB3/4/5 <-> 10G Ethernet adapter if I do move to Silicon though.

Yeah and the code quality in Windows is such dogshit that Microsoft has tried to switch to ARM multiple times and only after 20 years have they sort of figured it out, with massive issues. None of the Mac Minis have failed either, we have ~80 of those still in service. Still have a handful of 2018 Intel minis too but they are pretty slow in comparison. M4 refresh for everything pretty soon.

Used a mac for 4 years getting my degree in CS. Work only. I would never put anything private on this spyware piece of shit.

Pros:
It's as usable as linux if you use brew to install software. Avoid the apple store at all costs. It's like the windows store, absolute garbage.
The newer macs (I still have the Intel chip kill me) are really fast.
Arguably the best human input devices (keyboard, trackpad) on any laptop. Especially the trackpad is amazing. Amazing build quality (not under the hood).

Cons:
You are locked into MacOS.
Not all software supports MacOS. It's arguably the worst supported platform out of Mac/Linux/Windows.
Price.

Also make sure you get at least 16GB RAM.
Personally I will get a linux machine because as a dev it's more practical. Depands on what you do though.

That's neither here nor there. I accept that ARM is a better architecture at a fundamental level than x86-64 but the legacy of software that architecture brings with it is unquestionable. People keep trying to downplay this aspect yet I think anyone reasonable will always see it as stumbling block to any true migration.

And you know, I'm fine with it. It's never really done me wrong at a personal level. Switch to ARM if you must but I want that x86 translation layer.

>>105633038
>multiple generations of dGPUs running so hot they literally desolder from the board
No that never actually happened to anything at all. It was an industrywide GPU manufacturing fuckup, I mean every PC GPU until 08-09 is cursed. ThinkPad T61 had the same GPU and problems as the 2008 Macbook Pro. Xbox 360 and PS3 got fucked until they went 65nm.
If you see, the 9000 series NVIDIA Macbooks do not have these problems at all because NVIDIA figured their shit out by mid 2008. Microsoft figured out their issues around that time too.
Meanwhile AMD couldn't get their shit together until GCN so the 2011 macbooks got fucked hard and they never even got sued for this unlike NVIDIA.
Incorrect materials were used to secure the silicon die down to the GPU package, ones that went soft over 70c and caused the microscopic connections to break. That is about as simple as I can explain it and there literally isn't a fix. Ball grid arrays don't fail as often as you'd think, yes even leadfree. Flipchip packaging is exempt from RoHS btw.
However, I can add legitimate apploo hilarity:
>putting 50 volt backlight line next to video signal, a spec of dust can send 50 volts right into your CPU randomly
>using cheap solder that breaks on the VRM controller of the first retina macbook causing GPU voltage to stop existing and crashing the system then putting rubber on the chip to "fix" it under warranty
>chronic SATA cable failure YES SATA CABLE FAILURE ON THE ENTIRE 2008-2012 13" MACBOOK PRO LINEUP, 4 STRAIGHT YEARS OF SATA CABLES FAILING... A FUCKING SATA CABLE
>no underfill on iPhone touchscreen controller causing BGA failure of it and trooning out your phone into a total paperweight
There has to be more but this is quite a bit of shit already.

You forgot about compatibility, cost-efficiency and adoption. The vast majority of software that gets work done, along with hardware peripherals, is made with Windows in mind. I know a few Itoddlers who still struggle with that, since every now and then they cry about not being able to run windows-only software ( for example when their promoter asks them to do so). Apple's hardware is great but its brittle, not user serviceable and is not modular in the same sense as PCs, thats why most companies (and people who want to get something done) usually pick normal x86 workstations with windows, since if something breaks, or you need an upgrade, you usually need to swap only one part instead of entire machine. The adoption is also another important factor. 9 out of 10 people out there are tech-illiterate retards who just go the closest market, buy first best laptop (that usually comes with windows), use it for the next decade and swap it for something else. Those 3 combined still make windows a dominant desktop OS, despite that its a complete jeetware that is getting progressively worse.

Their solid enough hardware and software. But MASSIVELY overpriced for what you're getting. The one good thing I'll say about Apple beyond the OS (which has gone to shit as they try to iPad-ize it) is that Apple will support it for about 8-10 years before telling you to dump it, something MS (see: Windows 10->11) will tell you "Fuck you, get new hardware" within like 4-5 years of their next OS release.

You're still better off getting a Thinkpad and installing whatever flavor of Linux though.
