Luke Smith, The Tragedy
When I'd first watched Luke Smith, I thought that it must some kind of parody or satire or something. I thought he was making fun of the Linux community, especially with some of his videos, like the one where he complained about how Linux will be completely ruined by SystemD. But, then as I watched more, I began to wonder, how can he make fun of the Linux community, when he obviously is good at Linux and probably uses it himself outside of Youtube? He uses Artix, he is clearly good with Bash commands, he himself is obviously savvy to the community. I thought that this couldn't be a parody, he must be really like this. Maybe he really doesn't use any proprietary software at all, maybe he really didn't go to a single restaurant at all for a year, maybe he really is into all this Christian religious theo bro stuff. But now, I think I understand his channel. His channel is a work of art, a tragedy. The tragedy is this: we don't have control over many things, and at the end of the day, many of the things we do and talk about are completely meaningless. It is not the wild west, where you can rob a train and blow open a bank. Instead, all we can do is drink onions and edit our dot files. He is embracing the Linux zeitgeist, while being ironic at the same time. He realizes that some things the Linux community does may be silly or funny, but he embraces it anyways. He is saying: "Yes I know that it is silly to be so obsessed with le free software and le cringe SosytemD and le minimalism, but at the same time, I accept that it is a little silly, and that Linux is not something super important in the grand scheme of things, but at the end of the day, we can't constantly act as if we only do things are really important, we all are a little silly and do things that don't matter sometimes just for fun, so why not make silly Linux videos." Maybe, this is a red pill.

The old luke smith copypasta that goes like "I see Luke smith as the perfect example of falling for all /g/ memes" better. In case this isn't a copypasta, you really should touch grass and have sex or something. (I do neither, but I don't have to, because I don't write a whole paragraph about some e-celeb).

When I first discovered Distrotube’s channel, I genuinely thought it was some kind of elaborate satire. The way he dives headfirst into the world of window managers, rices his desktop with almost religious fervor, and delivers monologues about the “power of the terminal”—it all seemed too over-the-top to be sincere. Was he poking fun at the Linux community? Was this an inside joke about people who spend more time tweaking their .config files than actually using their computers? But as I watched more, something shifted. He wasn’t just pretending to be a Linux power user—he was the real deal. Distrotube lives and breathes free software, probably dreams in Vim keybindings, and would rather compile his own kernel than use a GUI installer.
There’s an earnestness in his videos that’s hard to ignore. He’s not just aware of the memes—he’s part of them. He’s seen the rants, the endless debates over systemd, the obsession with minimalism, and the never-ending quest for the “perfect” workflow. And yet, he leans into it all. He doesn’t mock the community; he celebrates it. He’s saying, “Yes, it’s a little ridiculous to get this hyped about a new window manager or a terminal-based music player, but isn’t it fun to care about something, even if it’s just for the sake of caring?” Distrotube understands that, in the grand scheme of things, spending hours perfecting your desktop setup is a niche hobby. But he also understands that sometimes, it’s the little things like customizing your status bar or finding the perfect color scheme—that make life enjoyable. Maybe that’s the real message behind Distrotube’s channel. In a world obsessed with efficiency and productivity, sometimes it’s okay to geek out over your desktop, to spend an afternoon tweaking your config, or to make a video about your favorite terminal emulator just because you can. Maybe, just maybe, that’s the most honest way to enjoy Linux. Maybe, this is the rice pill

I will always remember Luke Smith as the perfect example of what happens when you fall for every single /g/ meme at once, without carefully analyzing them first. He owns four ThinkPads at least. While I see nothing wrong with them in themselves, as they are admittedly pretty good value for the price, four is just mindless consumerism, contradictory to his "philosophy". He started using every single shitty pseudominimalist, ncurses-based program, used a shitty riced out i3 setup of dubious actual productivity (like all tiling wms), then fell for the full Suckless meme and went in even deeper. Then he started making videos shitting on Python and praising C, which is ironic considering he is not even a programmer by his own admission. He effectively spent years trying out, configuring and hopelessly trying to integrate tens of meme programs to build what is, combined, effectively a shittier Emacs, just like most of /g/ was doing in their "productive" desktop threads a year or two ago. Then he read the Unabomber manifesto and blindly accepted it without constructively analyzing it first, same with the anarcho-primitivist ideology that was all the rage about a year and a half on 4chan and 8ch. While he stated on his website that he "didn't browse 4chan much anymore" it was obvious this wasn't the case. Then he went and took the memes way too far, and unironically went to live in isolation. While I see nothing wrong in itself, the actual reason he did it is massive cringe. He has the mentality of someone 10 years younger than he is, yet he acts like a literal boomer jokingly criticizing "zoomers" despite he himself being the worst example of a millennial. He attacks "nerds" when it't painfully obvious he's deeply unhappy with himself, as it was obviously self-directed criticism thinly veiled as an edgy dabbing video. He is a perfect example of someone you should avoid becoming at all costs.
