Cache question: Let's say I have cached 1024 tokens (allowed minimum) + assistant and my message that wasn't cached before (256 tokens) - now assuming cache hit 1024 token are counted with the cheaper price while 256 tokens for the higher (to save it into cache) and then cache is saved again with 1280 tokens (both cache from before and the new one)? Or it doesn't work like that and there's no point in allowing cache that early, but then there's no option of caching from specific token amount in ST (at least I didn't found it)... Sorry, too dumb to understand this

There are no partial cache rewrites. It either has to be a perfect match or it writes an entirely new cache.
In your example, if I understand it correctly, nothing would be counted for the cheaper cache price. It would just create a new cache at 1.25x/2x (5m/1h TTL) the cost for the full 1280 tokens.

That would allow you to do something like you described, but that is not supported in the standard caching function of SillyTavern.

I didn't really get your first question so I'll just explain from scratch.

Be sure there is zero (0) stuff moving above the cache cutoff. No random, no dynamic lorebooks inserting that far back, no author note that's too far back. If cache doesn't work even for swipes try with an empty card and preset.

When you turn on cache it will write everything above that cache-cutoff point to cache. Lets say that's 10k token.
Now you write a 100 token message and AI answers with 200 token. The next time you send in a 100 token request it will bill you the cache read cost for the 10k, and the cache write cost for the newly added 400 token.
The time after that it will bill you the cache read cost for 10.4k token, and the cache write for the AIs and your new message.

So as long as you the stuff you send to the AI at least partially matches something that was cached (the 10k in this example) the rest will get tacked on to that and create a new cache point, only billing you the cache write cost for the new token. So you save a lot of cash even if you never swipe.

If you send ABCDE it will partial match, charge low cost for ABCD and add an E for write cost. If you send ABCDEF after that it will partial match again, charge low cost for ABCDE and add the F for write cost.

tl;dr it just works as long as you don't fuck up the already sent part. Always enable it.

Just be sure to check OR from time to time to see if it actually works. Another easy way to fuck it up besides random and lorebooks is having your max context token set too low, because that will trim messages, leading to cache misses

Alright I just tried an ancient method of just testing it and it works like I thought and like ABCDE example anon mentioned. Caching depth 2 - 10k context message gets cached. Then I send another message + 600 tokens and: 10k is read from the cache while 600 is written into the cache. Another message 10600k is read from cache and the new stuff is written into it, so ST handles it well (anthropic api, but I assume it works the same way for OR)

I think the chat format has become too limited for what models are capable of now. We've gotten diminished returns for over a year now and I think a big part of it is that our methods haven't adapted or improved since even before then.
I think the card format for characters is a problem as well. It worked when we used 3.5 turbo and needed tightly formatted instructions for it to not be retarded but we should really explore more options and attempt to branch things out. We've gotten lazy because what we have just werks.

There's also no prefill from what I can tell so far but I think I can get through filters by utilizing AI messages. I've never written presets from scratch so this whole thing is a pain in the ass.
