From his position, AR/VR is the only gamble they can take. They've cornered and saturated social media. Threads is a smalltime competitor to twitter and is still just social media. Instagram has become a smalltime competitor to tiktok and is still just social media. Facebook is actively dying.

Zuck is pretending he's Steve Jobs with his big bold paradigm shift to VR/AR. I'm guessing he's seen the writing on the wall for social media in 10+ years and is betting the farm on creating the next new thing. His longterm strategy is to create the first fully-featured AR glasses so that he can overlay bullshit over everyone's daily lives. The Project Orion hardware is actually really novel tech but it's a shame that wireless compute is all being used in the name of AR advertisements.
