should I even bother completing my CS degree? my dream job would be AI research or AI development, and if not that then something like systems programming or any other low-level or almost bare-metal programming, but I'm too retarded for advanced mathematics which is required for AI research, and I know the tech job market is fucked and is only going to get more fucked so there's no chance of me getting an ordinary development job.
I'm too much of a weakling for blue collar work and too autistic for other degrees so my only other options are retail/fast food or getting on neetbux. maybe I could try my hand at "content creation" or indie game development but I know that's just luck of the draw whether I make enough to live off of those or not.

Hi /g/
i learnt software at uni, shit happened, and i couldn't really find a job for years, mainly from health issues, and just did odd jobs here and there.
I kinda want to try getting a software job now.
Any guide or tips?
I just really want to get my foot in the door in any way and then just go from there.
I plan on revising java as that was what I was most used to. I plan on learning github, and looking up AI tools like copilot or chatgpt.
That being said if java isn't that good anymore, I don't mind swapping to another language.
Do any of you guys have a good guide or place to go from?

Now my issue is, sometimes when I boot I get stuck with black screen on both monitors and the EZ Debug VGA LED turned on. Is that realistic? If so, what should I buy? The server is using mostly desktop parts so power isn't insignificant, but I can't tell you how much. It's a 1000W PSU at least.
I previously had a pretty basic APC UPS with 550VA, which didn't last long without power and in the long term interupted power more often because the battery started to die and you had to shut off the UPS to make it stop screaming. I would like to avoid that if possible, but it seems like you have to factor in a replacement battery every 3 years or so.

What will happen if I put in the 1tb drive and connect it to the disc drive cables? Is there a reason it can't support more than 500gb?

Maybe if you're usage is low you can get decent amount of time, but the idea of a UPS is to either save your PC from turning off in a sudden power spike or brown out and saving work, or shutting it down safely if you're in a full power outage and not just some spike.
If you're looking for it to last hours than you'll need more than a basic UPS. I wouldn't even bother with that unless you're running a business. Just make sure your home server can safely shutdown. Surely you can restart it without any issues afterwards. If you need to do a million things to get your server going again after a restart or shutdown you need to reconfigure your server.
My laptop's battery has died, and I don't feel like buying a new one, since I'll be buying a new laptop in a few weeks anyway. Does anything speak against using my current laptop like a computer (as in, deriving its power from being plugged in) for the time being?

Let's say I took a photo of my dick.
I then saved this photo of my dick.
The file for the photo of my dick is named IMG_8008.CR3
I rename this file based on the date taken.
Taken today, this would be 2026-06-22_IMG_8008.CR3
I edit/process the photo and make a JPEG.
The final file is 2026-02-22_IMG_8008.JPG
I want to print this photo out with a reference to the original file on the physical print itself so that when someone finds the print in the future they can find the digital file it originated from and have some clues to how to print out a new pristine copy if it gets damaged.
How do I accomplish this?
Do I simply print the filename on the back with some other info like below or is there some other more proper way?

I've seen enough photos over the years where context gets lost or prints get damaged and people don't know how to get them replaced so I'm hoping to at least prevent that for my photographs. By the way my dick is massive so I don't even need a macro lens. Wallet sized prints can't contain it so most of my prints are 4x6 or bigger meaning there's always plenty of room for some details on the back. I just don't know how to put them there.
Thanks.

Krita is FOSS and is more focused on art while GIMP is like FOSS photoshop, you're probably already familiar with it.

Would this be a good computer to start with for vtubing it's on sale I'll be using it for streaming and gaming to
>>105676890I hate to break it to you but there's no way an integrated Intel graphics and 8GB of RAM is going to be able to handle vtubing + streaming + gaming at the same time unless you don't mind 15 fps. You're going to want an actual AMD or NVIDIA graphics card for that. It might be able to handle vtubing and streaming without gaming decently fine on it's own, but I don't know how resource-intensive vtuber tracking software like Live2D is.
512 GB is also pretty lacking if you're going to be installing a bunch of games and recording/editing videos, but you could always upgrade or get an external SSD later.
If you can afford it, I would shell out the extra $200-300 for a laptop with an actual GPU, even if it's not a particularly good one. Even a GTX 900 series would be a pretty significant leap.
To be desu that laptop seems a bit overpriced for a $500 "sale" in year of our lord 2025.

>>105677003I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for in a laptop or if you want it from a specific vendor but this Amazon link:
https://www.amazon.com/GTX-960M-Laptop/s?k=GTX+960M+Laptop
has plenty of results in a similar price range but with generally better hardware, although some might be refurbished.
The thing is, ~$500 just isn't going to get you the hardware you need if you want to be a gaming/vtuber streamer with "professional" quality/graphics. Especially since you might not even get any viewers, a vast majority of streamers barely get double digit view counts on a good day.
If you're just looking for a computer for general use and light gaming the one you posted is good, or maybe save up more and get a better one for gaming, but it's probably not worth it to spend that kind of money just to get into vtubing unless you know you're going to have an audience. If whatever computer you get can handle it, try streaming without a full Live2D or 3D model avatar (I believe they call this "pngtubing") to gauge interest, then maybe save money and upgrade later if people are watching you.
>>105677102The streaming thing is more so a hobby then to be an investment into a business. I do use my laptop for drawing and also emulation in my freetime
>>105677127Have you tried using Live2D or some other vtubing software on your current laptop? Depending on what kind of games you're emulating and what quality you plan to stream at you could probably make-do with what you have.
A quick test on my machine showed that a GBA emulator and OBS used about 500 MB (half a gigabyte) of RAM but pushed my CPU close to 4hz and used a bit of my GPU, but my OBS settings were at a pretty high quality, higher than what is usually used for streaming. Whatever software you use for your vtuber model will obviously use more resources on top of that.
I was assuming you were probably going to be streaming recent AAA releases, but as long as you don't have a lot of other programs running you could do just fine with a regular bitrate and not also recording video as you stream.
>>105677209I've only tried live 2d stuff on my phone to be honest the games I wanted to try are old and I have a switch. The only maybe newer product I would invest in buying is a ps4 possibly. Probably because Studio is some barely optimized (it's a phone app first and foremost, desktop is an afterthought at best) Electron garbage. And transcoding video on the fly is a demanding load, good thing they're using your GPU, it is how it should be.
Serious streamers have a second PC that handles all that, so the main one can have more resources available.

Furthermore those guys don't even take donations - probably for legal reasons but still. They're big on muh free internet, fuck Jewgle, etc. I don't know that they'd do that
For other dodgier extensions your paranoia is actually valid and I don't have a simple answer other than see if people are talking about the extension online and see whether it looks safe. But again, turning off auto-update

>>105675666Most major open source projects managed by actual organizations have people who actually review code and there will be users who report any exploits they discover. Think like most major Linux packages which are backed by organizations like RedHat. Ublock Origin is definitely used enough to have this level of scrutiny, even if it's not from an organization.
If the code itself gets lots of updates then anyone doing development work will probably just happen across the malicious code and can remove it themselves, so like AUR packages for example probably won't be able to hold exploits for a while.
For smaller open source projects, there's probably very few, if any people reviewing code, but malicious actors are less likely to target software that has fewer users until they have a specific demographic/person/organization/machine in mind.
4chanX hasn't been updated in months, maybe even years at this point and plenty of people have definitely reviewed the code since then so it's safe.

>>105679038Usually it's better to turn your PC off. If you have an SSD and leave it on sleep with programs running in the background that could be writing to disk or using virtual memory/swap it could quickly run down your SSD life. You'll also save power that way. It could also be a security/privacy issue, powered-off PCs can't be hacked and can't send telemetry
I think main reasons you would want it to stay in sleep is if you have a slow or unstable boot process or have programs you don't want to shut down.

Is anyone using it with audio files?
I record with OBS, but even though they say you can import multiple file formats, I can only import MP3 files. I tried recording in Ogg or Opus. They are listed as supported in NotebookLM, but I can't upload them. I got an error.
Yesterday, when I tried to import an MP3 file, I got an error too. What gives? I don't understand.
I converted it to AAC in ffmpeg, and it worked.
Does anyone know why those errors occur and how to avoid them when importing Opus or Ogg files?
Bonus question: How do I record pure AAC in OBS? I find MP3, Opus, Ogg, and a shit ton of different formats, but I can't find AAC.

I assumed it was, but I've heard people say it isn't but never elaborated on why. Price is close enough that I don't care about it, I just want to know which one I should get now that I'm upgrading my PC.
What, if anything, is better about the 4080S over the 5080?

>>105676556Like the other anon said, bandwidth is almost always the biggest cost for content-serving sites. Or in rare cases, if you have a ton of content with very few accesses, it might be storage, but it's usually bandwidth. For example catbox.moe has its costs dominated by bandwidth, even though you'd imagine it probably has a shitton of files that someone uploads just to send to like 1-2 other people and they never get downloaded again, but in the average bandwidth still ends up costing more than storage for them.
If you have a good home connection (e.g. gigabit symmetric) you could host at home. But if you're regularly saturating your home bandwidth, your ISP won't be happy either, because consumer plans are not made to be used for 24/7 utilization. You might be forced to get a commercial plan and then bandwidth will suddenly become expensive again.

>>105679501>What, if anything, is better about the 4080S over the 5080?I don't use nvidia but I've heard their drivers were really really shit for the 50-series, and not just at launch, but for months afterwards. I'm not sure if it's better now. Importantly, I'm also not sure if the new driver issues affected only the 50-series or if the fucked driver updates ended up fucking every card.
And the second thing is that the 50-series removes support for 32-bit PhysX, so if you're planning on playing any older games that have that, a 50-series card can literally drop down to 10-20 fps in physics heavy scenarios, despite being able to run the game at 1000+fps everywhere else. Look up the list of 32-bit physx games, it's shit like mirror's edge, borderlands 2 I think, etc. If you don't play any of them then it won't affect you (and the newer 64-bit physx still runs fine).
So look it up, if you see that the driver issues are fixed and if you don't care about the older physics engine, then a 5080 is going to be very slightly better. It's an underwhelming upgrade but still an upgrade; at the same price just go for it.

I noticed that sometimes my PC locks up and studders for a few seconds when under heavy load, by which I mean 100% for a prolonged time. I ran it through Intel's diagnostic tool and it passed with flying colors I did see the report had a "measured frequency" of 3.190905 vs "expected frequency" of 3.20, but it seems the tool still counts that as a pass.
Is that frequency dissonance something to worry about?
And could the occasional stuttering under load be from a few power outages, even though it's hooked up to a UPS (albeit one that at this point I'm convinced has a bad battery)?

How do I turn off mouse acceleration on linux mint 22.1 cinnamon?
Yesterday I did what some fag from reddit recommended, which was messing with /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d file or something similar, i deleted the folder and added it once again, added some text file to it, rebooted my computer and it turned out to brick my whole computer. I somehow repaired it with the help of my friend but now I am scared to mess with it again, yet the mouse acceleration thing is very irritating. I was always a windows fag, just switched to linux mint yesterday. I am very clueless when it comes to messing with system files or the terminal, although I definitely am not as retarded as most computer users.

I took apart one of my old PS2 controllers to clean it, and some of the rumble motor wires are detached from the board. I have a soldering iron but have never actually learned to solder before nor do I have solder itself, can I just heat up one of the solder bits the wire was previously soldered into, stick the wire back into it, then wait for it to cool?
>>105681516Cannot use Remote Desktop since everything is locked and logged.
Also don't want to risk too much, the company IT is kinda annoying.
>>105682600If IT is doing it's job, any kind of thing that'll put your work desktop in a window on your main desktop will be logged. I recommend just getting a KVM switch, unless you want to overcomplicate things with an HDMI splitter and a capture card (or just suck it up and get a second monitor, they're useful).
>>105682511No. You'd need to at least add flux so the joint wets properly. It won't attach very well if you just reheat a dry joint. If the board trace is damaged you'd have to scrape it clean and glue on some new copper foil as well.
At minimum you want to have some liquid flux (pen or needle tip squeeze bottle), desoldering braid, and solder. Watch the PACE soldering videos on youtube. Practice on a junk board before working on the one you want to keep.

Worth a try at least I'd say. Check their privacy policy and see if it says anything about data deletion requests. If not try on a VPN. If you find the right page that explains how to submit a request, I'd expect most sites will just do it rather than carefully auditing where your IP connection was coming from.
