Your thumb and little finger shouldn't be on the mouse but on the mousepad, surrounding it, it will give you the best most precise stop-motion. (spoiler: I played at pro level on both cs1.6 and quake live).

Grew up with claw (or fingertip I guess) because my hand is extremely large and I have always preferred trackballs for this reason
also fuck whoever invented thumb trackballs those shitty things infest every trackball search I have ever made for absolutely no reason

Fingertip grip with planted wrist and high DPI. The mouse shouldn't need to move more than around 1" in either direction to reach the whole desktop. If extra precision is needed, then the pinky finger can be planted temporarily.
