Anyone know what standard size keycaps are? I saw this listing Iโm not sure if they will fit Cherrys. Thereโs also no images of the bottom so the only thing I can go off if is the description โSize: Standard (Mechanical Keyboard)โ
>>105660993cmon when is mine arriving REEEEEEEE
>>105661426Which model did you order and how long ago?
>>105661436nah i'm just being a brat. ordered an f122 mid may so just have to keep waiting. someone on one of the previous threads said it was about a 2 month lead time.
>>105661648Yep, that's how long it usually takes. You'll receive a tracking email and there will be another waiting period until it actually gets sent for shipping, since it's done in batches.
Hi /mkg/! Are frameless/bezelless barebones full-size keyboards a thing? I saw this pic for the Keychron V6 and are they saying it's possible remove the top case and still have a functional keyboard? I like being able to see my switches from the sides.
>>105662033just get an integrated plate board. Drop makes some, Corsair makes em, idk who else. They shouldn't exist but they do
>>105662147feels like that's gonna get me falling down a rabbit hole. thanks anon!
>>105661379Unless otherwise specified, you can be 99.9% sure whatever keycaps you can buy are for MX.

I fucked up the joints on like four of them and have had to redo it when the key stops working

>>105665126I'm the one that got a tip instead, in the form of a coffee crisp.
>>105664934Why are ergo fags seemingly never able to sand their base?
You're already autistic enough to print your whole keyboard. At least make it look nice.
>>105665747Layer lines don't bother me, sanding PLA or PETG is a pain in the ass, and there's no point in ruining the look of the filament when it already looks nice as is.
>>105665747Sorry zogbot but I'm not spending 6 hours getting micro plastics everywhere just so it looks slightly more appealing to online strangers!
>>105666044>sanding PLA or PETG is a pain in the ass>>105666044>6 hoursAnd I thought it was laziness.
rephrase my post to be normal english thank you gpt saar
>>105665747You're vastly overestimating autism. 99% of ergofags just want clout for their sick hacker setup.
>>105666713>99% of keyboardfags just want clout for their sick hacker setup.FTFY
I don't give a fuck about how ugly it is or the sound it makes, as long as my hands are cozy. going the route of soldering your own ergo is already a trade in function over aesthetic.
Everyone who talks shit about ergo boards either never tried them or gave up after a week because they're retarded
>>105666898Yep, that's me. I never tried them because they're retarded

Which keycap material tends to have the warped spacebars again?
>>105669404PBT is more prone to it, but ABS isn't immune either. Both can be fixed with a hairdryer and some patience.
Is it normal for different rows of keys to sound different?
>>105669703Yep. Even within a single row the keys won't sound exactly the same.
>>105669703Yes, but better keyboards will have less of that.
>>105669734What actual feature of "better" keyboards mitigate this?
Are mt3 keycaps patented or something? Why is there no chink brand making and selling them for a significantly cheaper price than what they usually go for?
>>105671115Not popular? It's possible the chink brand of MT3 is not called MT3. They sometimes rebrand things specifically to avoid problems with patents.
How difficult is it to build a custom low-profile split-ortholinear backlit keyboard? 6x6 per side.

major downside of not spending the extra $30 for a gmk104 from the official site
>>105673494Would also work, though you'd have to be careful to not heat it up too much.
>>105668410Ill happily pay double price for it to be made in the US. $800 is about what is cost for the originals
>>105674434The plastic model Fs were $900+ after adjusting for inflation. The cast zinc 4704s would've been considerably more than that.
>>105674464Still less than the $10k that one faggot posted one on eBay for
>>105671932I'd say not at all, but it's a bit of "If you got to ask" you may have a steep time getting into kicad designing a board and then some more cad to design the rest of your housing. That said, best just buy a kit.

>>105675662>and their prices have almost fucking doubled over the past four years.Yeah because buying the already-existing tooling etc from a company that no longer wants it is very different from getting new tooling manufactured. The fact that their keyboards were ever cheap was an anomaly.
>>105675623>The kind of supporting industries necessary to do this no longer existThey do too, even in the US
want to thank the anon in the previous thread who helped me find a find a small keypad that I can program for dedicated media keys. I've only had it a day and I had improved my experience greatly. The price is reflective of IBMโs key dates 1924 and 1896.no idea wtf the last sentence even means. but he's relisted it as an auction and the bids are currently at $510
>>105675798fuck you missed out. even if modifying it was too much for you, you could easily get at least 200 bucks for each one. hell, that estimate itself i think is very underrated.
>>105674464i think someone got things mixed up. looking it up, NPR says the originals would've cost 600 bucks in 2017, but then popular mechanics says that in 1981 they cost 600 bucks, which would be 2100 bucks today.
i wonder if these figures include the $100 per year service support contract...
I need a keyboard with all metal key caps that allow light through. My razer has the wasd in metal and I want all of the keys like that or similar. Also a full size keyboard. I still use numpad constantly.

Are there services out there that do custom controllers for vintage boards? I am too retarded for microcontrollers but I have one or two boards I would like to actually use beyond display pieces
Any reccs on a low profile? Tried out my friends custom one, and realized I type significantly better on them.
I'm torn between nuphy kick75 and the iqunix magi65
>>105660962 (OP)My cherry silver switches (varmilo prebuilt) are starting to feel mushy and damp, what's something good to replace them with? I'd like a little bit more feedback than cherrys, but not super tactile like blues/browns. with low actuation and fast response like Silvers or something similar
>>105682478>but not super tactile like blues/browns"Super tactile"? Browns?
>>105682478>My cherry silver switches are starting to feel mushy and dampThat's not normal
learning to prefer R3 control has ruined buying keycaps for me
corne or ferris sweep? both low profile. I like how aggressive the staggering is on the ferris, but there are so few keys, which wouldnt even be a problem if there werent so few thumb keys
>>105665778Not that anon, but that looks like shit.
>>105676245>redundant keys
>>105660962 (OP)My Corsair 70 Core RGB has this issue where it types some keys usually "s" or "h" up to 5 times on a single keypress. Really annoying especially on unix-like systems where you type your passwords alot without being able to see them. I already upgraded the firmware with iCUE on a spare Windows laptop, the software itself is terribly bloated and laggy and takes forever to install itself. Apparently they have a web-based firmware installer for other operating systems so I didn't have to go throught that, not sure if it works since on Edge on Windows it detected my laptop as a "mobile device" and I wasn't able to install iCUE before I installed Firefox. I wanted to change the switches to something more quiet like Kalih Box Pinks, Corsairs's reds aren't that good. Would that fix it? The only reason I bought these instead of some Chinese ones is because I wanted nordic keycaps and it was one of the only sub 100โฌ full layout boards with linear switches. It doesn't matter to me anymore since I realized I touch type but none of those Chinese ones come with good linear switches. I should still have warranty for this but I'm not sure if it covers that. Even if it does if it's an issue beyond the switches I'd have to deal with it later on. Are there any cheap full layout programmable boards with onboard memory on aliexpress prefferably out of the box with linear switches or if it's really cheap around 50-80โฌ I could buy switches seperately. Alice or other split layouts are fine too and preferable as long as they are full or nearly full layout maybe even ones without a numpad. I've been considering getting a programmable numpad and could live without it for a while.
How's Logitech's MX mechanical? Not expecting much, tired of RGB shit, and I want a keypad because it's tradition.
>want DCS BoW but the kitting doesn't support any layout I actually use
Every deviation from normie layout leads to pain
>>105686547It's pretty annoying when some new set I like the look of comes out and there's no ergo kit, so I can't buy it. That mild annoyance isn't going to convince me to go back to row staggered boards though.
WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE CHERRY MX HONEYS? I NEED THE HONEY!
>logitech tkl rapid
my endgame keyboard finally exists
>>105687134I was about to ask the same but for the MX Falcons. I can't help but raise an eyebrow when they claim that the Falcons are meant to evoke the "crisp" feel of a typewriter, while being fucking tactiles (which is a niche Cherry hasn't especially done well in), but I definitely wanna see what they're like.
I feel like their new switches, at least their new "community inspired" MX switches, will turn out to be too little, too late; they'll never escape getting absolutely spanked by chink clones and spinoffs ever since the patent expiration floodgates opened (and in a twist of cosmic irony and humor, their manufacturing is about to become Chinese clones of themselves).
What's a good board with keys on it.
Also what's a good mouse these days? I'm liking my Deathadder V3 right now so I'm thinking about getting the wireless version next. Anything better I should look out for?
Preferably wireless, giant hands, palm grip.
could I get some recommendations, please?

>spend entire morning 3d modeling choc switch plunger to make post travel go from 3 to 2mm
>open up a tactile choc robin v1 to test fit before doing it to my red linears
>what if i remove the tactile spring?
>tactile robins now feel exactly like linears
god damn did i get scammed into buying reds when i could of modded my tactile ones this whole time? what does the c shape metal part in linear reds do? i've tested stability on both of them and they make no difference.
My custom mechanical keyboard's keys started to ping and rattle again after a few months of modding with very expensive components. This feels like a trap designed to waste my money. I don't recommend buying custom mechanical keyboards unless you have a lot of time and money to waste. Stick with good stock keyboards. I'm done with them.
Also, does anyone have a list of keyboards with encrypted 2.4GHz connections? It seems like Keychron is the only one that does. My Keychron V5 Max had issues out of the box (shitty, rattly stabilizers, and the USB-C dongle doesn't work). Seriously, just buy a stock keyboard.
If I have no knowledge or experience in 3d modelling, how hard do you think it'd be to try and design a 3d printed tented case for my split board? Not going for anything special, just a simple angled case
>>105689558>keys started to ping and rattle again after a few months of modding with very expensive componentsIf you mean the stabilizers, just add more lube.
>>105689558>My Keychron V5 Max had issues out of the box (shitty, rattly stabilizers, and the USB-C dongle doesn't work). Seriously, just buy a stock keyboard. The Keychron V5 Max is a stock keyboard.
You should have returned it when the dongle didn't work. (Assuming it's not due to firmware changes you made.) As for the stabs being shit, literally everyone knows this about Keychron, but we tolerate it because they are cheap.
Might buy the $3000 norbauer keyboard just to be done with cherry stabilizers forever
>>105688183>up to $60 full-size with tactile switchesDoesn't exist as far as I'm aware. Keychron used to make one but it has been out of stock for a while. Maybe someone else can find one but I can't.
>>105687118>and there's no ergo kit, so I can't buy itAll I need is R3 control and split rshift for hhkb fn, I can live without hhkb backspace... but even this minimal ask is beyond the pale for Signature Plastics
>>105689558BTW, I bought the V5 Max because I wanted a lightweight keyboard. I don't understand the obsession behind heavy aluminum keyboards.
>>105691088I didn't think about testing the USB-C dongle. I had already spent hours modding it when I discovered the piece of shit's USB-C dongle didn't fucking work. I had already bought and replaced the stabilizers (which required the whole keyboard to be disassembled) when I found out about the issue. Too late. I'm not getting another one. I've had enough of this broken crap.
>>105691110>doesn't even have remappabilityWhat a fucking joke, especially considering all their yammering about how it's an enthusiast and productivity-focused board.

>>105689665Not too difficult id you are using something like fusion360 which is fairly intuitive and tenting is a simple project to nail down. I reccomend getting some cheap calipers though so you can take measurements of your split and make rough approximates of what sizes some of the parts of the tenting you need to be. Don't be afraid to print out drafts either so you can compare them to your split and then make revisions to measurements or shapes for the design.

Thank you.
>>105700662They get dirty very easily, that's all I know. You're probably right that it doesn't last forever, even with PBT, but idk how long we're talking.
If a $30-50 dye sub set yellows a little over time, though, it wouldn't be anything to get upset about. It's only when I imagine shelling out for >$100 double-shot that I feel otherwise

If someone is blatantly upcharging for nothing, that's always relevant. But your subjective judgment that paying an appropriate price for machined brass is "being ripped off" because, in your opinion, nobody needs it: that reeks of poverty.

But if you want to go there you can get CNC 60% for less than that on shit like aliexpress. You are being upcharged. Simple as. Besides I don't think you want to really be throwing stones around on who the poor fag is here. Poorfags like you buy into gimmicks like this

Thoughts on the keychron q6 HE?
I was looking at the q6 max but for 15$ more i can get the hall effect version.
Hall effect switches seem to be the new hot shit. Is it a meme?
>>105705134I would just go for a standard Q6 personally, but if you are deadset on the MAX for wireless you won't be too blown away by the HE in terms of feel or perfomance. But if you are already paying that much for the MAX an extra $15 is not too egregious either at the point. If your not bothered by them don't go for it but if you feel like you want to play it safe do the extra $15
>>105705213I pulled the trigger on the HE. Hope i dont regret it.
The standard q6 (pro) is only 40$ cheaper than the HE so why not HE i guess.
I dont plan on swapping key switches but im aware of that limitation.
I do wish they offered the q6 HE with the black side print keycaps though. Those look sexy.
Anybody know where i can find a good keycap set for it that isnt keychrons $70 set?

Honestly though even if they were double the price I think people would still be willing to buy them as they would still be cheaper than good condition original beamsprings, or at least I would buy them at double for the gurantee in quality. The B122 is pretty cool but spending that much for it and there is a possibility that in 10 years it will brick while an original beam can still function after decades just doesn't really compute to me. I don't know about the round 2s but I remember with the round 1s they weren't even the original beamspring key module designs and they could break if you applied uneven force on the downstroke ontop of feeling different to type on.
>>105709269>Honestly though even if they were double the price I think people would still be willing to buy them as they would still be cheaper than good condition original beamsprings, or at least I would buy them at double for the gurantee in qualityi watched his video where he got invited to talk to google, i think he said that when he first asked how many people were interested in the project, only about 40% of those people actually went ahead and bought his first keyboards. it's a huge risk and coupled with the fact that he lost at least five figures from a factory or factories either fucking up the order, or trying to commit fraud, or maybe both - i forgot the specifics but i think he somehow managed to get it back, which is INCREDIBLE fortune given that he is a foreigner dealing with the chink legal system and from what i've heard with other people who've had to go through their legal system, this sort of thing is rarer than unicorn dust - i'm not surprised he'd be super cautious about overextending himself and offering a warranty that might end up costing him more than what he actually has.
if anything, while i still do not like how he does shit like "hurry! get this before the end of <insert current month here>!!" watching his video really just drives home just how much money and resources IBM had to be able to do all of what he's doing with three factories in three different countries, all the while providing continuous support for these things for years and years. And also...he's quite literally the only person remaking the model f and beam spring boards, if someone wants that badly, they don't have much choice.
>>105667360>HHKB and realforce mouseVery nice. I have my Heavy9/FC980C at home, HHKB BT for travel, and Realforce R2 PFU at the office. No other switch as good. Its essentially a medical device with how often and hard I type.
>>105709942It's an admirable start up story, and yes you do have point about how there is not many people who would be able to do what he has done. But I still don't really see how it justifies the build quality of his product. It is kind of like if someone from /ck/ wanted to start serving koba steak in a mini restraunt and he is able to buy the land, get the farmhands, the aggricultural tools, livestock and feed to raise cows for koba style meat. But then when he serves the koba it is raw and there is a waiver for the person to sign so liability can be mitigated if they contract tapeworm. It is impressive that the guy was able to start up his own farm and buisness to serve the meat but that all kind of blows away when the product is less than useable. As far as I am aware the only real reason why no one has done their own is because of the beamspring mechanism requiring specialist manufacturing for the steel leaves, everything else can be recreated without too much complexity besides obvious cost to scale if they are trying to sell a bunch.
>>105710710>food analogysir, this is not a restaurant, don't try to eat the keyboard
just buy one of the keyboards yourself, new orders have been pretty good, just wiggle them a little if they don't work and it'll be fine, it doesn't take as much effort as you think to troubleshoot a problem

after 24hrs with speed linear keys I can tell for sure that the people saying that you can easily actuate these by just resting the hands on top of the keyboard are either trolling or have the heaviest hands know to man.
I still think I prefer tactile switches but even with 1mm actuation I can't for the life of me envision a situation where I would accidentally press any of these keys
>>105714455Depends what you were using before (tactile enjoyers develop a habit of resting with their fingers pressing into the keys a little) and what spring weight you've got in your new keys.
>>105714536>tactile enjoyers develop a habit of resting with their fingers pressing into the keys a littleI guess despite using Browns for nearly a decade I didn't develop that habit
>>105714582Hmm, I guess you and I are just different because after a decade with browns I did develop that habit. What's the weight on your new switches?
>>105714621They are Corsair OPX so I guess 45g?
>>105714664Surprising. My brother had problems with accidental keystrokes just switching from 60g cherry reds to lighter 45g linears, no change in actuation depth. If there's no problem for you then there's no problem.
>>105714700(Also, when I say he had problems, I only mean for the first couple of days)
>>105710710you do have a point, but i've also heard from others that bought his model fs that the keyboards he sells now are far better than the initial ones which is kind of unsurprising given that ones that are ordered now have almost 10 years of improvements and knowledge behind them now.
>>105714700>>105714712I do notice the change in depth more than the actual weight to be honest. But I'm slowly getting used to it. Also I would always bottom out when typing or gaming with my previous keyboard too and was surprised by the fact that apparently some people don't do that.
>>105710421What case is that?
>>105714389Your best bet is to learn QMK and wire up the switches out terminal to terminal to form a matrix and then connect them to an arduino flashed with QMK. Remove the switches from the pcb and keep them housed in the frame near the gasket with the diodes and wires underneath. If you can't solder practice wire wrapping with 30awg wire and diodes with a 30 wire wrapper ((you can find them on a lot of websites) alternatively you can pay more and get 24awg wire wrapper and wire). Also contact Keychron customer services just in case if a replacement pcb board can be sourced.
>>105715118If it happens with multiple instances of the keyboard it's gonna happen with a replacement pcb from them, that's why I wondered about different brands.

I've had the CM Storm Quickfire TK with browns for ages and need a replacement. It doesn't need software. I don't need wireless. Backlight is simple white. Compact layout with a numpad. F1 key is above the #2 key which is a must.
I'm struggling to find a non-chinese keyboard with these specifics, or at least one that doesn't need me to install bloatware. Was looking at the Akko Black & Gold 5098B. Has a great layout despite the ugly colors, but I can't find any proof that I can use it without their software, and I don't want to be stuck with the rainbow lights.
Also looking at a Keychron Q5 HE QMK on sale. No idea about the "gateron double-rail magnetic nebula" switches. They sound kinda stupid but if they feel good I can get used to it. As for their software, I think it's web based, so maybe I csn set it up once and never worry again? Faces on the keycaps are kinda small but maybe it's not that bad.
Any alternatives I'm not aware of or should I yolo buy the keychron? Not sure how legit they are and how good these magnetic switches are.

OK the McDonald's thing maybe was a bad idea, how about this instead:
Neo60cu, brass, ano black hhkb top. GMK gold-on-black. No accents. Extension kit for stepped ctrl.

Pick the Spanish layout option.
Buyer beware. I am not "recommending" this, and I expect it will look and feel pretty cheap. But it does answer to your requirements. Just configure the RGB to be a solid color.
"Brown switch" will probably not be quiet on a board like this, but quieter than blues.

The only thing is I'm not sure if there's an issue with it randomly not registering certain keypresses or duplicating them, when typing quickly. . I've swapped switches before but its not always the same keys or anything consistent - some anon said basically to try it on another PC when I get it built because it may be more of USB fuckery than any actual problem with the keeb itself. Assuming I can to the best of my knowledge find its working, is it best to try and sell this on some plebbit mech community or is it common enough its better to go in general hardware sales or the like?
>>105740973What switches?
>>105741165Depends. You're likely not going to score too much compared to other boards but if it is fully functional you can still probably sell it for around or below $90-$100. In bongland the cheapest going rate for opened but unused is ยฃ70 which roughly converts over to $90. If there is a fault you're looking at a lot less than that, but honestly if it is only present at high words per minute I don't think it would be too much of a problem and I doubt most buyers would be typing fast enough anyway (assuming we are talking about a ballpark of 50+ wpm)
>>105741242Ahh that's just the barebones - mine actually is fully built out with caps (Aura V2 PBT pudding) and switches (Glorious Panda , lubed) as well. I even have some accessories like a the brass plate (new in box never used) and the official case for it..

Have been thinking about getting a UHK, mostly for the split, partly for software customization. I like the appeal of mouse input via keypresses - I've tried mouse input on my Q1, but it isn't that great. Is it any better on the UHK?
One concern with the UHK is the standard stagger. If I want split, should I go ortho too? What about a Lily58? I don't really want to solder anything, and I don't really want a 3D-printed case. Are there any good kits / prebuilt versions I can get in the UK?
>>105731031I wish I could do that but its 11 months and I am still waiting for my group buy that I ordered in july 2024. I have been told its been shipped 4 weeks ago but so far nothing. Its always fascinating how things get shipped out after 10+ months the very moment you ask whats going on with the delivery time.
>>105742575Using mouse via key presses is really meh, I tried it but didn't like it, found it fatiguing and generally annoying. Imo row (standard) stagger on split boards are really stupid, I have no idea why something as expensive as the UHK has it, you really want ortholinear/column stagger so it conforms much more to your fingers and their different lengths. I would recommend something like the lily58 or corne instead, they will have a steeper learning curve but you'll have a much better experience in the long term.
How important is software? If you get a lily58 you'll be using QMK, which is really customizable but takes some learning. If you want an already soldered board, I know holykeebs and keebd have options for a pre-soldered lily58, with the former actually offering the option for a mouse input device on the board itself

>>105743438I only tried it a couple of times on my Q1, but it didn't feel great. The movement was far too quick and imprecise. I think I have a broken switch, I have to press the key very hard for the input to register (but it does consistently register when I do). Would it be possible to repair the switch or is it beyond repair? I have a shitty soldered board
