In the instance of that shaver, it's more that they have been around a very long time and waterproof connectors for anything that predates USB-C is kinda rare.

They made their own just so it could be waterproof

I see that you too lost your beard trimmer or shaver recently and noticed Phillips had worse offerings than 5 years ago, albeit now with a terrible USB connector.
Plus side...people looking for replacements for their old beard trimmers can now buy a USB cable..

the actual problem with shavers like these is that they won't shave when plugged in, for "safety," so when the battery eventually becomes useless you have to throw away the whole thing and buy a new one

Could it be to better protect against water or hair getting into the port? I know USB sure as shit isn't built for that. And I bet the terminals get a really good connection on the razor side. I'm just trying to imagine the purpose of it too.

It's actually just their old connector grafted on. Much like the Wahl ones, it's a two pin plug with a rubber/soft plastic shroud that pushed in and a small groove or cutout to ensure it's pushed in the correct way.

It is indeed to ensure that water doesn't get into it, however, they also don't work while plugged in too, so...y'know.

Naaaah, my Philips TV from 2012 is still up and running!
Sure, the backlight control is more of a brightness control and you need to adjust contrast for the real backlight control and that in turn fucks up colour, but it still works!

You're right though.
There's an entire section on wikipedia titles 1980's to 2000's: Decline.
They wound down operations, licensed the name out. Around 2010, 2011 was when that started to happen more, so even stuff like their shavers, trimmers, appliances and other products are just junk with the brand's name stamped on it. I believe that even their lights have succumbed to this.
Philips for consumer electronics is a scam operation, a gamble on whether it'll be good or some North American junk.

>Why are companies like this?
publicly traded companies and the fiduciary obligations that derive from that

shareholders need to get their dividend
they dont fucking care because once the company starts to slow down they just sell their shares and move onto the next venture

fiduciary obligations are THE reason for the enshittification of everything
because otherwise companies have incentive to provide a quality product
because then the name of the game is stable growth, not short term profit

I have hair clippers from a different brand (Remmington) but they use a similar (but probable slightly different) plug.

I suspect the design is to make it less sensitive to water.
Although USB-C connectors can be made waterproof I think they have to be completely dry before you can use them for charging.
My phone refuses to charge when it's wet but I plug my soaking wet hair clippers in to charge all the time.

Philips used to be a highly reputable Dutch electronics company.
But they figured they couldn't compete with cheap products made in Asia so they sold their lighting and consumer electronics divisions to several Chinese companies.

Now the original Philips only makes medical products but they actually suck at that.
And there are several Chinese companies selling junk under the "Philips" name which gives them all a bad reputation.

So basically Philips is dead except for the ASML spin-off.

It is. You can't fit any other figure 8 connector into it. You can't even use the charger of older phillips shaver on newer models even tho they have the same voltage because they made the connector slightly different. I had to cut the wire off the newer one that stopped working and solder it to the older charger that still worked to charge my shaver. This is ridiculous.
