If you're in Europe buy a Portasplit and if you're in America buy a window ac. If it has a hose it creates negative pressure and pulls hot air inside which will make the cooling process long and inefficient.

they need to exhaust somewhere + noise. too much fuckery and effort with that one for just a couple days/weeks per year when it is actually aids weather outside.
right now outside is +35 and my apartment is +27. not ideal, but kinda manageable. closed curtains + 2 tower fans + 5 running dust filters on low rpm - not an extreme cooling lol but it keeps air moving inside apartment so i can last for a week or two of this weather.

Compared to real ACs in terms of efficiency it's dogshit, but compared to a fan it's a blessing to have.
I pay a flat rate for electricity and live in Germany where summers are around 30 to 40°C so your experience may be different, check your local temps and price per kWh before buying!

Minisplits are very expensive to install in Germany. That's why people buy portable units.
Monoblock : 200 - 1000€
Portasplit is 800 - 1000€ .

Meanwhile minisplit cost 500 - 1500€ for parts + 1000 - 1500€ installation (it is illegal to install it yourself 16000€ fine) + ~3 month wait time if you're not friends with an installer.

They are much better than single unit ACs like in OPs pic since they're quiet and more efficient, and "real" split ACs aren't always an option if you're a rentbabby

They are fine, don't listen to the retards in this thread. All this bullshit about open windows and pulling hot air inside doesn't fucking matter in the real world. Even if you cool your room by 2 degrees it's fucking day and night and my cheap one can do like 10 degrees if I wanted to. The only actual downside is how fucking loud they are, you might need to consider that if you have direct neighbors or children.

Basically this.
A real installed AC is better than both but as a rentcuck or if your situation doesn't allow it, portable mini splits (portasplits) are the best you can get with euro windows, and window units are the best portable option with sliding americna windows.
If you can't use even a portasplit, get a dual-pipe AC so you don't have the single hose problem where you just sucking in hot outside air all the time. Single hoses still work but they're just so expenisve to run and they mostly dehumidify.

Of course, the best effect is achieved with a properly insulated home, but every bit helps.
What you've been doing isn't wrong but it's only half of it. The goal isn't just to let the cool air in, it's to create a current where the cool air pushes the hot air out, and then is pushed out by new cool air once it warms up.

Open the lowest windows in the shaded face of your home, then open the highest windows of the opposite side. This will create flow that can make your existence a little more bearable. Lacking the funds to get a home designed or refurbished for this system, you can still get good results if you have a multi-story house or at the very least one with windows at different heights or in opposite sides.

If you're actually trapped in a one store apartment facing only the sun the RIP. No choice but to get AC.

Like any real American, I have three ACs of three different types. Here's the reality:

>Central air
Obviously works the best and cools the whole house. But it uses way too much power, which you waste on cooling areas of the house you're not using. Massively expensive to repair or replace, so also avoid cycling it too much (I aim for a 20 degree delta from outside temperature).

>Window unit
The best option for cooling a single room. They're cheap, efficient, and cold. The only downside is that they can be more prone to mold from condensate (Midea just recalled a few models for this). They're also a pain to install and uninstall, if you want to take it out for the winter, because of the awkward shape and difficulty of insulating the gaps well.

>Portable unit
Use this if the portable part matters to you for single-room cooling. They cool the worst, take valuable floor space, and are generally louder than window units. But they install very quickly, and are just as easy to remove and put away for the winter. You're not going to want to move it around regularly, but a plus is that you can also move it to another room easily enough when you need to (think having company over, or working on a project in a room).

Portable AC's work but aren't the most efficient devices out of the box. By constantly blowing air outside they create a lower air pressure indoors, which results in hot outside air getting sucked into your home through every nook and cranny. One room might get cooler, but all the other rooms heat up like crazy because of this.

I rent and local regulations are a bitch meaning I cant just install a proper unit myself. My 14000BTU portable units are modded with 3D printed adapters to add an air intake hose. All air hoses have been replaced with insulated ones as well and attach to MDF panels that seal off a window. It makes my home look like a drug den from the outside, but at least I am comfy with 21°C indoors instead of the +30°C I used to have all fucking night.

Wow, this is based as fuck, I didn't know Midea made these.
I used to have a portable split AC (not made by Midea but by some European manufacturer), and it was fucking great. It was a lot quieter than regular portable ACs, and the performance was much better too. This technology is pretty rare though. Sadly the hose punctured while I was moving, but the unit still served for over 20 years.

get one immediately, i wish i had got one 10 years ago when i lived in an attic that would become unbearble to do anything in the summers. All you have to do is find a way to plug the hose out a window or exhaust or something to let out the hot air. its loud as fuck but better than being completely immobilized by the heat.

A portable AC is going to be better than no AC at all.
OP is considering a portable AC or a ceiling fan.
A portable AC is the obvious choice.
I have a portable AC for a room that doesn't have windows and I have it vented outside via a duct.
It's not ideal but at least it keeps the room cool.

Freeze water bottles overnight and hold them on your lap during the day. Cycle them out as the ice melts. Drop one in a bin of water and submerge your hand when you get too hot. Circulate cold air into your room at night and early morning. Keep all appliances off during the day. If you have to use a light, use a low wattage LED light since it won't give off much if any heat.

With both heaters and air conditioners keep in mind the amount of house they have to heat/cool. It’s probably called like max volume or something. If you have just one little air conditioner and give it the work of cooling an entire house, you (probably) won’t notice much of an improvement. But if you just hang out in your bedroom or office and put the AC there and close the doors, the AC will only have the work of cooling one or two rooms and you’ll feel much better in comparison. Closing doors is how you reduce the amount of house they have to work on. Same exact thing applies to heaters.

That terminology was also used by Mao Zedong in his ‘three-worlds theory’, which he used to explain why Chinese communists need to break off the Soviet Union ‘communists’ (in his own words revisionist social-imperialists) and instead get closer to the American capitalists (imperialists in his own words). Today self-identified communists use that terminology to explain how the rich ‘western’ and anglosphere countries are filled with fake proletarians who will never be revolutionary and need to be overthrown by ‘third-world’ ‘anti-imperialist’ countries.

AC is for if you need to cool an entire space very slowly/inefficiently. if you're stuck to your poopchair than a fan is unironically better and more refreshing. inb4 noise just put your heaphones on nigger you are at a computer.

Get a decent pedestal fan, don't be a stingy little shit and you will get something good.

That thing on your pic is an icebox, it will make things humid and will encourage mold growth, so no. There exist portable ACs but they are LOUD little shits, you need to connect the exhaust to a window so you have to do modifications, the cold escapes the room easily and they don't distribute at all so the fan is still a must.

Spend $300+ on a portable evap cooler if you live someplace with reasonably low humidity (like less than 25%). It needs air flow but will use less power and be more effective at least at cooling your place down overnight, which is the best strategy overall.

Dual hose portable units are equal within the margin of air of any fixed install. They can also offer you closed single room cooling if you are cheap, or it's crazy hot and your portable unit(s) isn't up to the task.

Swamp coolers are okay for the desert but only to a point and can make things much worse if you have a jump in the humidity.

Most people being too uneducated to use the correct phrase ("developed economy") instead doesn't change the meaning of well defined terminology. Kinda like retards say they have a "theory" to describe the got a hypothesis, and it doesn't matter that 90% of people misuse the phrase, if you write call your shitty idea a theory in academic circles you'll be laughed out of the room. Because majority use is not how scientific consensus works. It could be that newer terms become more popular, but that will not change the definitions of established terminology for a reason.

I’m doing some research on this and have an important bit of info for if you’re still shopping for one: Be careful trusting the square footage (area) advertised in the product’s description, they’re calculated using the best case scenario. This AC claims to be good for a 450 square foot room. According to calculator.net’s BTU calculator, you’d need 12,500 BTUs for a 450 square foot room in its default conditions (meaning bedroom with average climate [wouldn’t you only use an AC when it’s hot?], sun exposure and insulation, average two people inside and a 9-foot ceiling).
https://www.calculator.net/btu-calculator.html?roomsize1=450&roomsize1unit=feet&ceilingheight1=9&ceilingheight1unit=feet&people1=2&roomtype1=bedroom&insulation1=normal&sunexposure1=normal&climate1=normal&ctype=room&x=Calculate

>the machine does create some heat
Which is a round error in the efficiency of the unit.

There's more than one BTU rating. It's not the square footage that's optimistic, but rather the BTUs of cheap junk ACs like that one. For the unit in your pic, the 10,000 BTU rating is ASHRAE. This is the ideal number, calculated under perfect conditions. But most ACs you see in Home Depot instead of on Amazon don't use ASHRAE. They use DOE, which is lower and accounts for inefficiency and waste heat.

As an example, I have a portable unit advertised as 10,000 BTU with 450 sq. ft. coverage. It's 10,000 BTU (DOE), but 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE).

If you have a house with 2 floors and a basement, this will only work on the ground floor. If you have metal roofing and an attic that overhags the upper floor, you'll still be boiling upstairs. AC would be wasteful and inefficient compared to just staying downstairs because the roof is metal and the sun streams directly into the windows upstairs.

Eurocucks crying about 78 degrees outside being a heat wave. It was 81 degrees at 4:30am where I am. It will get into the 90's today, ignoring the swamp-ass humidity which makes it feel hotter.

Start planting trees to block the direct sun from scorching your house and turning it into an oven.
>but i need it now
You say this every year. If you had done it 5 years ago, you would have a nice shade, and it would be noticeably cooler inside than outside.

Also, you can get mature trees...
Remember, the jews hate trees.

lol exactly my thought.
It is insane how people, who can handle the heat are projecting their tolerance onto others.
Meanwhile 26°C in my room. Split AC? Nope, not fucking ALLOWED.
I fucking heat the summer. May - August plainly sux.
Germany, where "Zug" (draft) is a mythological creature that makes you sick immediatly and ACs are from Hitler's hell... in a bad way.

Depends on the country. In the Nordics the legislation mostly controls who gets to install them but anyone can buy them. Most buyers go for heat pumps though.

If the exhaust from the PC is hotter than the outside air, it's going to be a net benefit.
Also you don't want to use metal tubes like that. They act as heatsinks and will radiate a lot of the heat back into the room.
You want to use plastic, and/or insulate the tube.
You also want to keep the tube as short as possible. If you can have your pc sitting directly in front of the window it would be the best.
I would suggest curtains to obscure the pc so an urban youth "visiting" the neighborhood doesn't see and take it as a donation.
