Have some self-awareness, this is the OP.
This is how he's coping with his 9070XT purchase (was only $90 cheaper than a 5070Ti).

Realistically how much time for an OLED burn in to be really noticable and bothersome when I am 90% of time gaming and content consuming?

Did anyone actually make a proper test scenario for burn in?

It depends on how you use it.
Playing at higher brightness levels, leaving the OS taskbar on, playing games with a lot of static UI like MMOs, or playing games with a lot of white UI elements will accelerate burn-in.
Some games allow you to adjust the UI colors to be more OLED-friendly, while others will require mods.

A cheatcode to help prevent whine is use anti sag brace properly. Just putting the holder in a random spot is not enough. Place it under the offending coil and boom it goes away.

I am also about 10 years removed from being active on this board and somehow managed to have the image rotate on upload. It's the usual top rad config.

>>105673078
I think the 360 rad would look much better aesthetically, but I'm not CPU bottlenecked and my peak temps under benchmark are still only like 60c with a mild undervolt/OC. I had to draw the line somewhere. When I started the build I intended to use a good air cooler so even just this was what I was referring to as "reaching."

Thanks lads, i am really happy to have finally upgraded. My old rig is still going strong and my oldest and I can easily play OW2 or any of the games he would like. Another neat little side effect is the old lady set up an is using her easel now in the same area. We have a little theater/stereo setup in 1/3 of the basement, her painting and bookshelf in the middle 3rd and pic related in the last bit.

Going to build a desktop PC for my mom.
Requirements:
-She can have 50+ tabs of social media stuff and Youtube videos plus photo edit and messaging apps running at the same time and never see any slowdown at all
-2TB+ of storage with backup (I'm thinking a 2TB SSD and another one with mirror volume setup for backup)
-Small profile, quiet, power efficient
-Easily transfer stuff from her Android OR Apple devices
The gray area for me is whether to go Intel or AMD for the CPU/mobo and what the best one for this use case is. Need rec on which manufacturer, series, and generation to choose. Help me out?
Also leaning toward Win10/11 Education for the OS but open to Linux distro if it offered her a good experience.

If you don't have a strict budget I'd actually be inclined to recommend current gen Intel. Loads of cores, good "idle" efficiency, and a decent IGP (with QuickSync if she does video editing). AMD 7/9000 would also work but loses out slightly in low load efficiency and core count at the low end.
If, OTOH, you need to keep it under eg. $500 you'd have to drop it back to Intel 12th gen or an AM4 APU. Still probably more than enough.

imo in modern PCs 99% of the male/female ends have some kind of marking or shape designed to be foolproof as in you cant ram it in the wrong hole if you take your time, which you should be doing
past that the only thing i find not intuitive is
>naked case and airflow design
which is imo impingent on where you put your PC
>having an ultra tiny case
in which case fuck you if you have sausage fingers
other than that the only real issue im having right now is
>you cant trust your old parts if migrating from an old build
im still figuring out if my RAM from an old build is an issue but theres nothing about that that could have been solved by having someone slap the parts in for me

What do you mean by this? Do they have different heat spreaders? The PCB difference doesn't matter.
It's fine as long as the pair is working according to advertised specs, that's what the manufacturers care about when packing these kits.

Memory kit manufacturers don't make the physical PCBs, it's being sourced from a separate board manufacturer.
Your memory modules just got two different PCB batches. What matters is whether they run stably (this is tested before final packaging).

RMe uses more affordable Chinese caps instead of the more reliable Japanese caps in RMx.
RMe is also a bit louder and maybe slightly less power efficient.

It doesnโ€™t mean RMe PSUs will blow up, and theyโ€™re covered by the same 10-year warranty.

My friendโ€™s PC has a RMe 750, itโ€™s past year three and working fine.

Alright talk me out of it because I'm going to pull the fucking trigger after price matching. Going to be used for games, stable diffusion/AI, and some home lab stuff. Going X870E in case I need to load the thing up with M2 drives and slap a 10Gbit card in it at some point. 96GB of ram so I don't have to kill virtual machines while gaming, debating downgrading to 64GB but it's only $120 extra. Didn't do much research on MRSP level 5070 TI's but it doesn't seem to have shit cooling like the MSI and Gigabyte ones seemed to have? I hate coil whine, dust, and noise but it seems like that is a crap shoot to avoid nowadays. Anyone used Memory Express or Canada Computers? I live in an all carpeted micropod now so debating just having them build it instead of risking ESD and RMA hell. How important is the undowngradable bios patches for CVE-2025-2884? 1000W is overkill for that combo, 750W is good enough (CPU PPT: 170W, GPU: sub-350W)
That 5070Ti seems ridiculously expensive ($945 US), look at some 9070XT cards.
I'm not the Radeon shill, but that's an extreme premium.

9060XT 16GB and 5060Ti 16GB could also work if you're willing to adjust some settings (High/Mid) from time to time.
I would prioritize value for money and feature set.

Hard to recommend ASRock boards at the moment because their boards are still killing Ryzen CPUs, it's a shame because I like the build/specs of 3 of their models.

>I'm switching from Intel and I'm completely lost when it comes to checking out chipset for AMD.
The differences between the chipsets are CPU/Chipset PCIe lane requirements, maximum rated USB data transfer speeds, and the number of SATA ports.
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/amd-x870e-vs-x870-vs-x670e-vs-x670-vs-b650e-vs-b650/

Yes, you just have to update the board BIOS using a flashback feature (CPU & memory installation not required).
Every B650 board should have this feature.

Try to get the B650 AORUS Elite (V1, not 2) if you can @ a reasonable price.
V2 is also okay if you can't find V1.
B650 TUF WIFI is also fine.
MSI kind of cut corners with their B650 board, not necessarily poor quality but the above two are usually better.

The Flashback button is on the rear-IO panel.
Read the instructions carefully and be patient with the process, you need to let the update process fully complete.
https://www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1038568/

It's not a difficult process, just be careful.
Most B650 boards will require you to update the BIOS before it knows how to work with that CPU.

B650 varies more in pcie gen5 support because of non-requirement to include gen5 pcie and m.2. slots
B850 is basically b650E which includes one guaranteed x4 gen5 m.2. slot but the x16 gen5 slot is still optional.

If you don't want to think too much, b850 is the way to go. I'd even say that x870e is a downgrade from b850 since x870/e sacrifices x4 lanes to support usb4.

>Hope won't bent the cpu socket pins like I did with my intel the first time I place the cpu.
My advice is to install the CPU before you put the board inside the PC case. (place board on top of the motherboard box)
Don't remove the protective CPU socket cover until you're ready to install the CPU.
And install the CPU in the correct orientation, you shouldn't have to put any force when you're fitting the CPU to the socket.

I'm really having a hard time picking a mobo and RAM. Does it have to appear in the list to work?
Every time I look for something, it's one of these cases for 9000 series:
ASUS: I'm reading most of them at those prices are good, but I can't find RAM compatible with it.
MSI: RAM appears sometimes, but it doesn't say shit if it works with EXPO or whatever, and always says single-sided, and I've seen other examples using dual.
Gigabyte: Most of the time it appears, but I heard Gigabyte is shit.
ASRock: Is melting X3Ds...
Am I being a retard or will any RAM that says EXPO-compatible just work with any board?

The next advancement in monitors will be modular panels that are user serviceable (ie replaceable). This way instead of trying to permanently solve the burn problems of OLED, why not find a way to make them cheaper and then market models that can have its panel (specifically just the emission surface) replaced regularly every handful of years?

redditors get mad over slight gray screen uniformity fuck ups after around 1 year
if you are not that autistic and depending on usage, monitor, firmware how it operates, years? oled tv pixels cluters dying might more of a concern, maybe not

I guess they will fill in a stop game meme like the 720hz ones or some shit
keep in mind you are already at 2ms persistence at 500hz for the blur, will 720 750hz be impressive worth an upgrade? barely worth
new memes like 5k2 240hz ultrawides or ultramegasuper dual 4k ones might drop though

Be aware of the age of your PSU. Age will have taken off some capacity and of course will be running it closer to its limits under load. If you ever find you need a new PSU later, contemporary 850W models will be cheaper than 1000Ws obviously and are meant to fit that parts combo.

A passionate display enthusiast like you shouldn't be so cynical about the market.
Gaming monitors (+240Hz) with DisplayHDR TrueBlack 600 panels will be available within the next 1~2 years.

>lgs new panels and whatever will drop and they will be worse than qdoleds or something
I was listening to the Monitors Unboxed podcast while doing some chores today, it featured the TFT Central guy.
The TFT guy said he's looking forward to the Gigabyte monitor (MO27Q28G) with this new LG panel, and claims it will be one of the brightest OLED monitors in the market.
I believe it's got a matte finish though.
https://tftcentral.co.uk/news/gigabyte-announce-mo27q28g-with-a-27-primary-rgb-tandem-woled-panel

Samsung and LG Display have to keep developing better OLED panels or they're going to lose the market to Chinese display manufacturers.

Had one where I had to rip out the front (plastic snap fit) and the top (plastic snap fit, also the IO is attached to the panel because fuck you lmao) panels just to replace a top fan. And then on other cases you don't need to open any panels at all. But then there might be shit getting in the way.

It does not have to be on the manufacturer's list to work. Those are the kits the manufacturer tested themselves. I have a set of Trident Z5s that are not on my motherboard's officially supported list but they work just fine because they are essentially the non-Royal heat spreader version of a kit which IS on the official list.

Whippersnappers like you don't know what real fixed fans were like back in my day. Had a Cooler Master from the times where there were front drive bays, that thing had just one shitty slim fan crammed in the front bottom with a 100% unservicable front panel and those sponge dust filters that are inserted into the grilles from the inside (also 100% unserviceable). Just count yourself as living in luxury that you can even replace them.

Thanks guys.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jYpLLc After weeks of looking at prices and lurking here, this is what I have to show for it. I only have doubts about the monitor, since this is the first time I'm getting more than 60Hz and 1080p, and I just keep reading things about ghosting and HDR is hard to tell if I've never had anything with that to my knowledge.
At the moment, I'm leaning toward picking the ASUS ROG Strix and the MSI MAG or maybe just going with two MSI MAGs. I donโ€™t think I can spend more than $300 on a monitor.

That's why you set a longer time frame for buying parts. I've seen a lot of weird advice about how you should buy everything at the same time. Yeah sure if you want to pay more to the corpos. If you instead choose a 6 month period to slowly buy all parts as they go on sale many cheeseburgers will be saved.

This is pretty easy for most components since you should have a couple of comparable alternatives and at least one of them is bound to decrease in price.

XMP and EXPO (and DOCP, X-AMP, EOCP, etc.) are fundamentally the same thing - unused bytes in the SPD chip repurposed to store additional timing data. The difference is just minor variations in the timings themselves that (in theory) are better optimised for Intel or AMD CPUs. In reality the difference is super marginal so you'd be hard-pressed to notice anything outside of benchmarks.

I haven't had a computer since 2010. I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. I clicked the pcpartpicker link and it had builds already made for retards like me. Is that what i should do? I don't know whats good at all. Live in the US, i have about $1500 to spend on this, but i can push it to $2000. I don't have a use case involving work, but someone several threads ago told me to just take a guess. I don't have a job involving computers, is fucking gaming the only benchmark i can go with? I don't really do that, but I also don't render videos, or do music production, or any of this AI crap i see all the time. I guess i just want whatever i get to last me several years before i have to replace anything, and I'm tired of phone posting on everything, and I'd rather do this than get a laptop.

Sounds to me like a thing that would make sense for ITX systems which could be potentially moved around, so having a wee little bit of battery life seems rational to have.

Chill, Stacey. People are actually telling you to not fuck around with money and don't waste it on things you seem to don't even need in the first place (you don't care about gayms, you don't do any production, you don't need it for anything besides shitposting).
Want a perfect and cheap shitposting machine? - Mac mini on m4 in the most-basic config for 600 bucks or one of those intel nucs or whatever.

Honestly, maybe i should have lead with something for my nephew first. Unlike me, he does like to play video games, so maybe i should start with him first. If you said i could get by with something around $300, I'll take your word for it. His birthday is coming up, so it is probably better to devote this to him first and I'll get my shitbox later.

Alright, that changes things. If you want something upgrade-able later then I'd say a used outdated build would still do just fine, but make sure it's in a decent case. Although for as long as you have nothing more hardware-intensive to do on it, you really will not need to upgrade for like 20 years possibly. And it's not like something like a miniPC will make your experience any worse compared to a tower with the same peripherals plugged into it.

People say it isn't better than a 7700X and is limited to 65W unless I turn PBO on or some shit, is that something that's guaranteed to work fine or does that fall under the "YMMV" umbrella of lottery performance bullshit?

Most of the performance improvement in the 9700x over the 7700x lies in very specific avx512 code. Outside of that the 9700x is about 5% better at the same clocks as the 7700x but since it's gimped to 65W tdp (88w) at factory settings, it runs at much lower clock speed than the 7700x and thusly only matches it

Yes b650 is fine

15 years ago when i was a kid and had no idea how to build my own computer i used cyberpowerPC to customize one
they skimped on RAM by using some weird offbrand and did the same for the watercooler
i paid 800 dollars altogether and looking back it was about 600 dollars worth of parts

What would be the process for making it run at higher watts? Is it a simple setting that guarantees it at the expense of more power consumption or more of a "might work, might not" overclocking type of situation?

Go to the AMD overclocking options and then into the pbo submenu. Then set a ppt of 150W and EDC and TDC of 180A and your CPU will boost without limits (except the 95C thermal throttling). This isn't considered overclocking and won't cause instability as the CPU still uses the factory programmed voltage/frequency table

I am returning to school and will be doing compsci. I don't plan on gaming much but will be doing light video production. I will also be doing coding and cyber security stuff, don't know how CPU/GPU intensive all this will be.
I do know I like 4k vs 1440p but I can be talked down off the ledge if 1440p will save me a lot of money. I want dual monitors, one 32 horizontal, one 27 vertical. Ideally I'd like a little room for growth into the future but my needs shouldn't escalate hard.

I should add, where I live I can pick up 4k Monitors for 1/2 price very easy (northern Virginia) so I should be able to get the 32 and 27 4k for about 250 total.
I have never built a PC before and don't know if all these components fit correctly in the case as configured. But I have watched many videos on the subject and it seems easy enough.

I would not go for a white build or AIO at that budget, you can get a newer/better case from the savings.
There is also a cheaper memory kit, Team Group is a reliable memory manufacturer.
You're not realistically 4K or probably even 1440p gaming with a 3050 6GB.

Alight lads. First time owning an OLED. It's been a couple days. MSI321UP. So far It's ran 5 pannel protect cycles, and each one was caught mid-gameplay so I just had to stop everything for about 10 minutes while it does its thing. The screen says it will also do this while PC is "idle" but I don't know exactly what it counts as idle because I don't really feel comfortable leaving my screen on while I"m not using it because you know, burnin and all that shit.
In windows I've got a 1 minute timer for automatic wallpaper change, 10 minute timer for screensaver, and 15 minute timer for screen off, and never off/sleep for PC itself, and I didn't touch any of the settings on the screen itself.
In return for the answer, I give you my battle station so you may laugh at me.

Pre-emptively run a panel protect cycle before your gaming sessions or change the management period to run once every 16/24 hours.
You could also just hit the "Cancel" button to delay the protect cycle until the monitor enters a sleep mode cycle.

Check the monitor's firmware version, FW.017 is the latest one for your monitor.

It's just how GPU manufacturers do business now, Radeon included.
Chip manufacturing & design costs keep rising, GPUs are significantly larger than a CPU's logic chip.
NVIDIA is incentivized to offer the smallest generational gains when there's no competition.

Expect between 15~25% generational improvement even accounting for the node upgrade for the 6080 and below.
If the gains are on the higher end of that percentage, expect higher prices.

The -90 class GPU is a bit different because its specs aren't constrained to a laptop GPU's chip dimensions & efficiency targets.
All the other RTX GPUs are flexibly designed to be spec'd as a laptop GPU.

- my old CPU Intenl Core i5 7400 @ 3.00GHz => Ryzen 7 5700X 3.4 GHz (i want to run Doom: The dark ages so just copy it's recommended CPU)
- my old mother board ASUSTek B250M-A (LGA1151) is not compatible => so I need a new one MSI A320M-A PRO MAX Micro ATX AM4, basically just a cheapest one i can get
- And a cooler Thermalright Assassin King 120 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler
- all other parts are just recycled from current PC and are basically the same as the pcpartpicker list

Appreciate if you can get some feedbacks or recommendation.

If neither option is possible then I'd say to get the 12700 build since your preferred games are generally heavier on the CPU. However, the card might struggle with the games you're planning on playing - if you're getting acceptable FPS (with your 7400) on your current games then it may be better to go with the 5700X build.
Also, like the other anon said, if you do choose to build AM4 you will want a better motherboard. For BIOS compatibility if nothing else.

It's probably staying at 600W, the node shrink will provide some efficiency gains.

>What do you think 6090 specs and improvements over 5090 could be?
I can't say, it will depend on the yield of the larger chips. Probably a minimum of 20%
Yield estimates for a perfect GB202 die are around 57%, 5090 uses a cut-down version so the yields should be a bit higher.

That motherboard might not work with the 5700X out of the box, you need to go to a PC building shop and ask them to update the board BIOS to one that's compatible with the 5700X (latest version should be fine).

Alternatives include finding a board that supports that CPU out of the box, or buy a board that allows you to update the BIOS without a CPU/memory.

Not a waste imo, but this is down to personal choice.
If game devs add FSR4 support or if you use the Optiscaler mod, you can apply FSR4 upscaling to improve 1440p performance with good enough upscaling quality.
But you shouldn't use the Optiscaler mod in multiplayer games with cheat detection.

If you care about multiplayer performance, I would stay @ 1080p.
Check the difference when you visit that PC shop.

Only guaranteed to run that configuration according to their CPU spec sheet (XMP stability not guaranteed).
Pic shows the supported memory speed for the 14600K (same for all 13/14th gen CPU).
12th Gen CPUs support a lower speed (4800MT/s).

If you want to run @ XMP speeds, stick with 2 DDR5 modules.

Probably the 5070, the performance gap is too big between this and the 5060Ti 16GB.
>VRAM!
That could be a problem in certain settings, but the latest DLSS update reduced the amount of memory it uses.
And there's no game where a 12GB card can't run even at the low(est) setting.

Radeon cards do have more VRAM, but they also rely on it more compared to GeForce cards due to differences in GPU design.
It's a matter of how much you're concerned about the 12GB capacity. I pick the stronger chip.
You can even find some 5070 at/below MSRP these days.

Question for those with experience with monitors:

>27'' screen, 1440p, no upscaling on Windows 11
VS
>32'' screen, 4K, with adequate upscaling on Windows 11

Which of these will give me more screen space to work with? I see that one of the advantages of 4K is that you get more "real estate", but let's be honest here, it's impossible to use native 4K on Windows, you need to make the operating system scale everything up, and I was trying to calculate if after this scaling, I will actually gain considerable real estate compared to 1440p.
