does anyone ACTUALLY need a laptop? I mean, if you aren't travelling frequently? I'm starting to realize a smartphone and a desktop is all you need.

My experience right now - I had to take a one month unpaid leave from work to fly to another country to deal with some legal bullshit which spans over a month. I'm in an old house that doesn't have a PC and I'm with my old Huawei MateBook D14 from 2020 with 8GB of soldered RAM. It's a pain and I'd be very happy to have a more powerful laptop with more RAM and bigger screen than shitty small 14". Laptops are useful. I'm limited by technology I have here.

Sometimes you want to take your office with you.
It's a nice to have option, but yes, in general a mini pc + gfx dock and a phone are enough.

Nice Quiet office.

It just feels like unless you spend $1,000 you aren't getting anything decent or worth your money. Obviously a desktop can cost much more, but that's also upgradable over time.

It's all a game of tradeoffs. A solid laptop won't be cheap, will never be as good as a desktop PC but you can take it anywhere - and you never really know when you'll have to be somewhere.

I think the question is does anyone actually need a desktop. Laptops are super cheap these days and handle every basic PC task with ease.
Makes no sense to have a desktop if you aren't using your computer to play demanding games or doing AI shit, rendering or 'workstation' stuff
I use my laptop probably 4x more than my desktop
I also love lying in bed with a laptop, great times

>you spend
If you're buying a laptop, you probably don't NEED it. If you actually need a laptop, your workplace should be providing you with one.

I like having the option to play games. On a laptop, having the option to play games both involves a premium and a disposability.
So therefore owning a desktop is the only way to ensure full operation, and then a laptop is hard to justify

does anyone ACTUALLY need a computer? I mean, if you aren't computing frequently? I'm starting to realize a mechanical typewriter and a tv is all you need.

Isn't that the one where the CPU is glued to the battery, making it overheat if you play for too long

it's retarded boomers thinking that a desktop is something of the past and laptops are the new thing. They have no idea about components or ventilation. They even buy laptops for teenagers and the little retards always end up destroying them because they are just easier to drop or pour a glass on water on it.

if gaming is the primary purpose of the machine obviously a laptop is a bad form factor. Also, a 600-700 dollar cheap 'gaming laptop' legit will run any game, the experience is just lame because small screen, shitty keyboard, heat and fan noise

My work is more downtime than actual work and we have tightly controlled system and network, so everyone brings their own laptop or gaming devices.

>bigger screen than shitty small 14".
Do you really need a bigger screen? Sure it's nice for games and movies but for both productivity and browser 13 is comfy, especially if your eyesight is good enough for high resolution without scaling.
I was hesitant to get 13.5" 2256x1504 , but 200 dpi turned out perfect at typical laptop viewing distances.

I really need it. My eyesight is not that great, when I look at the 14" screen for a longer time my eyes get tired faster than when using 16" screen and various software I use has GUI that either doesn't scale up well or everything's just too damn small. I need 16" or 15.6" is the lowest I can go and this was experimentally tested by me. I also need more than just 8GB RAM without option to upgrade...

You're so out of touch it hurts
They buy laptops because they cost less than desktops and are more convenient

I'd say the best all purpose setup for people that don't have to work with computers is actually a smartphone and a tablet, with things like a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, monitor, laptop desk for bed, telescopic controller... a bunch of accessories, but a couple of main devices only, and if they both run Android, or iOS and iPadOS, it's easy to have them in sync too, almost a single device...

That's why you should buy a used laptop.

Ever since I got a good paying job I've had a shopping addiction. I would change laptops, tablets, phones every year. I've realized it's to replace the fundamental loneliness and boredom in my life.
Any tips on how to overcome this? Anyone deal with this ITT?

it's just like any other addiction, you get dopamine hit when you acquire something you want. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you can afford it. I focus my shopping addiction on guitars though, they hold value better than computer stuff

>desktop
>home server
>smartphone
>tablet + keyboard for travel (optional)
Sunshine/Moonlight to your device when you're out
Or ssh into home server
Boom now you no longer need a laptop
If you prefer the form factor that's okay, but the argument of it's necessary for my productivity when I'm not at home" isn't as strong of a use case now unless you're a normie.

It will work until you need it. Do you never go to the coffee shop or library?
