I've never had an issue playing with my normalfag friends provided the game actually had working crossplay. But most of the games I play don't and I don't play the console versions because they never got decent updates like delay based netcode.

Our online games consist of Neverwinter Nights 1, Age of Empires 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and occasionally Path of Exile when we want something more fast paced, all of which runs perfectly fine on my toaster with linux.
